Try your luck in SBG, go in the early morning. Take a walk at the helicona park, symphony lake and eco lake. You may find something nice over there... :D

hey what happened to the main discussion about

"Re: How come nobody buy the 80-400mm VR lens??"

so now this thread is about migration season in Singapore?

anyway, i read some other forums where some people feedback that the 80-400mm because the focusing is kind of slow for shooting birds and wildlife... also the VR is version I... then there is the issue of being a slower lens due to the slower and non-constant wide f-stops of f4.5-5.6

Yes, the af is slow but depends on what camera body you mount it on. However, the lens can perform better when you know how to play on the limit switch on the lens body. Flights shots of birds are hard to take but flying display of fighter planes during the air show is possible as i have taken many times using this lens and i am happy with the results.

The VR is the first version. Why it is slow.... it does not have SWM in it and it is not a IF lens. However, the colour of the photos taken using this lens is very nice.

no doubt the shots would be nice but i suppose there are people who would want it all as in fast focus, constant wide 2.8 or f4 f-stop, VR II...

so may this lens less popular? it could also be the fact that the max focal length is up to 400mm but for those really into birds and wildlife this is still not long enough... i could be wrong but the BIGMA which can reach 500mm seems to be more popular and it's cheaper than Nikon 80-400mm i think (i could be wrong)

400mm for birding is definitely not enough, sometimes 500mm is also not enough. BIGMA is definitely cheaper but I am not sure about BIGMA as i has heard from birders that BIGMA is not recommended by them as it is slow in focusing. Tamron 200-500 is a more recommended lens instead. However, if a person who knows in approaching birds slowly without scaring it away, he is able to shoot the bird even with a 70-200mm.

hmmm sometimes birding is not all bout asking locations for places..1 must research and try locations for yourself.

Stop down this lens to at least F8- F11 and it goes really sharp
