Hong Kong Camera Gears Shopping Guide

Even if you list your own name, I think everything is still subjected to GST above a certain value.

My sister travels to HK regularly so I usually call the shop first, they quoted me and my sister would visit the shop to purchase it.

I am kind of frustrated with them now for quoting one price when I called and when my sister visit the shop they said the price is different day by day. This happened one time last year and I ended up paying more.

Today my sister went to the shop planning to purchase a Canon 85mm f1.2 lens. They said they don't have stock and need to order and the price varies and may be higher.

I am losing trust in this shop and I feel the way they quote on prices are deceiving.

In HK, it is not a common practice to give quotes over the phone since most shops afraid other shop will undercut them by a few dollars. I will suggest you communicate with the same person who gave you the quote since quotes from the same shop but with different sales usually might vary. Ask them how long they will honor the quote.

The recent Japan earthquake has caused the stock to be at very low level. Not sure if the stock situation has improved since so you might be paying higher price than normal in the current market. At one time, I heard the lens price has jump 20%. If they have to get stock from other shops, perhaps they are also paying a higher price for it?

Ya lor... Else have to change quite alot of HKD...

One tip is to change at DBS bank..they give the best rates (very close to bank published rates) way better than money changers. They charge hkd 100 but will be waived for dbs customers, just show your ATM card, credit card.

But they close weekends.

Gears aside, any recommendations on souvenirs for relatives? :D

I have bought from BH & Video before and never need to pay GST in the past.

I can report that I will now still stick with Echo :-) Apparently my sister went back to the shop the next day and they gave a discount. I haven't get the full story yet but I am happy with the purchase. It might not be the lowest but I would rather shop from a reliable and trusted shop then getting bad experience from saving a few dollars.

Walked round and round earlier around where Tin Cheung was then realized they have moved.
No longer at Friend's House, they are now in a spanking new mall, K11, 18 Hanoi Road, Level 3. Near to their old location which is now an empty shop.
Spoke to them, they relocated about one week ago...

Tin Cheung main store address updated. Thank you for the heads-up. Have not been in their Tsim Sha Tsui main store for quite a while. I have been going to their Mongkok branch more often recently.

Withdraw from the ATM machine will do (My max withdrawal at the machine was 1000HKD per withdrawal, kinda troublesome if you are withdrawing amt like 12k HKD).. current DBS exchange rate for withdrawing HKD is approx 6.16.. my last withdrawal was 6 June.

Hi boss, any idea how's the price like for Sigma 300-800mm for Canon now? Price.com.hk only have updates for more popular lenses.

Thanks.

would like to ask if the international warranty is inclusive of calibration for the set bought in hk...?
do i need to register my warranty online?
yes, calibration is included. As for register online, I don't think you need that to claim international warranty in SG, just bring the warranty card and the original receipt, that should be good enough.

I will check for you when I go to camera shops, have been busy doing renovation recently...

Can the shops in price.com.hk be trusted? because in comparison with the prices there and those of wing shing and tin chung, there is quite a large difference. Especially the citiwide technologies shop limited

can put up a link for me to take a look? Never deal with them before but basically I bought 95% of my electrical / electronic stuff (not just camera stuff) based on the price from this website and so far all of them are all good and decent shops.

Anyone going HK or are currently there? I need to get a bag from tin cheung.. =)

I'm going to Hong Kong next Tues. But I'm not sure if I have time to shop around that area...
