when buying lens, can i ask to test a few copies and then select 1 or are they stricter and will only allow me to test 1 copy?
i took 1 and tested it... and asked for another set as the first lens has some back focusing.

i think this should be better then asking them to take a few out b4 u test any :)

I will suggest u ask for a copy first, test it for focusing issues etc then ask for another one if you are not satisfied with the first one.

Many a times, if you ask to test or inspect the lens, the shop will give you a good one in order to save them the hassle.

was wondering if it was worthwhile to save on $100 while compromising on the 1 year warranty?

was intending to get either sigma 30mm or canon 28mm....

was researching on a few website that sigma sets could be more problematic.... :o

sigma has a year international warranty while canon doesnt

someone please advice. thank you.

you won't loose out 1 year warranty if you getting canon gear... at most 6 months with their tourist warranty (6 month international coverage)
only draw back is to make a trip to canon servicing center to register
fyi

Canon's tourist 6-month warranty only applies to powershot models (not EF/EFS lenses). Canon HK discontinued issuing international warranty cards for their lenses and flashes since last October. Unless you still find old stocks that come with international cards, otherwise, all new stocks are only issued with HK local warranty cards which you can only claim warranty service from HK Canon.

My apologies, didn't know that the tourist warranty does not apply to lenses.

Jacquelinejake, pls take note.

Thanks for the pointer, Bro CS Tan.

Well, good news. There are no shortage of Sony CZ lens in HK. Bad news is everyone jack up the price. The gap to official price is narrower.

Surprisingly, there are no physical warranty card on the sony lens. Just a big light blue sticker (that tells you to reg online).

Surprisingly, suning give very competitive prices. they even entertain buy more, give a bit more discount.
Broadway prices initial quote is usually same/close to wing shing. broadway also do buy more give a bit more discount. But wing shing no entertain buy more...
Seems like there are 3 pricing level across the various chain stores.
Credit card price
Credit card but one shot pay in full (meaning not using those credit card installment)
Cash price
In terms of friendliness, I rate those chain stores better than wing shing.

Cam2 do have good prices. Their giottos blower is 20% lower than other stores.
One outlet quoted me $480 for a 67mm B+W filter. Saw the box got the hologram sticker. Got say it's mrc. Everywhere else quoted me mrc at over 600+. Since I totally no do any research on B+W before, decided to give it a pass.

Ying Kee at Apliu sells stuffs at really good prices. One of the cheapest along the street. Most products got price tag. So no worries of getting chop.
Bought a benro tripod with ballhead and got quick release plate for Hk$550.
Not sure if it will be cheaper in sg.
Their filters are cheap, anybody got any idea if it's original?

I got my benro tripod from them too. It was S$100+ cheaper in hongkong for the same model in Singapore. To find out if yours was a good buy, compare the exact model at the Benro thread. :)

Great to hear that. I was tried emailing the local Benro but didn't get response. Probably not interested in business.

Anyone can confirm if they sell the Combo series Benro tripod? It's those you see people use with Gimbal heads.

I will be going to HK during Aug and been wanting to get a canon 580EX II speedlite and a Sigma 10-20 F3.5
Any word of advise and things to note?

I'm going on 3 Aug :)
Ya, if no int'l warranty, might as well get the "water" goods. I think some grey sets here also quite competitively priced!

Dunno yet, will chk it out in mid jul. Anyway, need to knw the mkt price first, if better to buy here then won't be changing so much HKD le.

The main thing is get to know the SG and HK market price BEFORE you leave SG. This way, you will know whether to buy the item from HK or not. If the price difference between the gray sets are really small, perhaps getting the gray set from SG will be better since most shops will offer their shop warranty and you can go back to them much easier.

Knowing the HK price will prevent you from getting cheated in HK. Do take note some of the really cheap price listed in price.com.hk might be those with shops in hard to get places. Use it as the low benchmark when doing shopping. Also take note of the date the price was posted. Some of the really old price quote might be outdated.

Duplicate post.

Hi all,

I am wondering if any of you have any experience shopping at Echo Photo at Tsim Sha Tsui.

I have been buying from the shop in the last few years spending over $10k with them. Generally I am very happy with my purchases and the prices are very competitive.

My sister travels to HK regularly so I usually call the shop first, they quoted me and my sister would visit the shop to purchase it.

I am kind of frustrated with them now for quoting one price when I called and when my sister visit the shop they said the price is diferent day by day. This happened one time last year and I ended up paying more.

Today my sister went to the shop planning to purchase a Canon 85mm f1.2 lens. They said they don't have stock and need to order and the price varies and may be higher.

I am losing trust in this shop and I feel the way they quote on prices are deceiving. I might as well purchase it from BH & Video website where the prices very competitive as well. But unfortunately in my last purchase from the website, I was slapped with a 7% GST as I listed my company name.

Please share your experience if any. Thanks.
