I just email tin cheung for a quote of a nikon lens with international warranty.

and they reply "We only have the lens with Hong Kong warranty. Thank you."

mm~ does this mean the warranty still valid in nikon singapore? or just nikon hongkong

Not a grey set cos it is covered by hk warranty. However, hk warranty not covered by nikon spore.

a set that has international warranty will NOT be call a gray set since by right "international warranty" means any Nikon CSCs all over the world will honor the warranty claim.

It is easy to find out whether the set is a gray set or not. Just look into the box and see if you can find the Nikon warranty card.

If there is one, Nikon's lens warranty card should cover both local and International so there should also be a word "International" printed on the warranty card. This is what we called a local set. If you buy from SG, the card should be from Nikon SG, if you buy from HK, Nikon HK's name should be on the card.

If there is none, that means there is no warranty from Nikon and that is what we called gray sets. However, some shops that sell gray sets do provide their own "shop warranty". Shop warranty means that if something goes wrong (during the agreed warranty period - might be 1-week to 1-year which vary from shop to shop), you can bring the lens back to the shop and the shop will decide how to and where to fix the lens for you.

there are different channels the lenses can be brought into SG:
1) through the Nikon SG authorized channel (local sets that carry Nikon SG warranty)
2) parallel imported by shops (gray sets that do not carry Nikon SG warranty).
Both type of lenses are manufactured by Nikon and their quality are no different.

shops that sell gray sets normally offer their own "shop warranty". During that warranty period, if there is a problem with the lens, the buyer will bring the lens back to the shop (not Nikon service centre). The shop will decide how best to resolve the problem themselves. Sometimes, it might be a one-to-one exchange, sometimes they will bear the repair cost and send the lens to local Nikon service centre.

I think you have missed the point that gray sets usually do not have any warranty cards included in the box.

Without the warranty card, there is no local warranty nor international warranty. Only shop warranty if the shop decided to offer one.
