I'll try...

1)barn doors

This is for simple control of lights in terms of wideness (like floodlight to snooting it down to a more spotlight situation

PAINT207.jpg

This is for constricting the light to a narrow spot

Not very sure on this. Seems like it's to soften the lighting and yet not cut down on the output too much...

4)grid spot

Sorry, no idea...

5)honeycombs(and their different sizes)

Similar to grid, more of a diffuser...

6)octagonal soft box vs squarish soft box

The difference is in the shape of the catchlight in the model's eyes... square or slightly rounded... your choice

zac, it definitely did.as i'm sure it's beneficial to many who wants to start a home studio.

if you can elaborate, in what situations do i use all the above, especially snoot and honeycomb(cos they look interesting to me;) )

Honey comb is used for directional lighting. It will direct the light rather having it spilling all over.

Snoot is for lighting a small area, e.g. hairlight.

Barndoors are used to block out light from areas which you do not want to be lighted.

Snoots are used to direct light to a certain spot, to accentuate certain areas for e.g. hair and are used in conjunction with other lights to create the full effects.

Grids of squares and honeycombs are used to diffuse the light. Also often used for hair or when you want a more direct form of lighting instead of diffused like bounced off umbrellas or thru softboxes. They can also be used in conjection with a softbox for even more diffused effects.

These are my amateur understanding of these tools of lighting. ;)

I am a newbie... don't get the wrong impression...

1)barn doors - to make sure the animals stay in the barn
2)snoot - A snout or nose
3)grids - line that make the grid
4)grid spot - spots on the grids
5)honeycombs(and their different sizes) - inside of hives
6)octagonal soft box vs squarish soft box - 8 sided and 4 sided box made of soft matl

Grids and honeycombs serves 2 purposes. The main one will make the light more directional. The other purpose, as a result, the light also become much more defused.
