I do not agree, when you enjoy the photo more than the equipment, I agree when you are a camera collector. Just like my late father buy so many camera and accessories now past down nobody border to make use, wasted all the money.

Yes and No.

Serious photography need investment. Casual one just do with what you have. That's the difference. ;p

Depends on how I want my image to be percieved in this forum, I can argue either way, equally well or equally stupid. But in our hearts, we all have our own real answer. This debate can go on on with no real fruitful conclusion, IMHO.

Well ... I'd say no.

As they all say ... It is the man/woman behind the camera. So, even with a non-DSLR, we can still all enjoy photography as a hobby, honing the skills in the process.

In fact, I believe it is cheaper today as the advent of digital means no more incremental costs like films, processing, etc.

Is there a debate? Can not both viewpoints be true concurrently?

The point is that any hobby, once you get serious at it, will absorb $$$. People can spend enormous amounts on stamp collecting, hifi, fishing, etc. So $$$ is not just a photography thing.

But this does not mean one cannot enjoy the hobby without breaking the bank. A guy who likes badminton can make do with a simple $50 racket, and can be very happy-- just as much as a guy with a $500 racket.

If a person is serious about his hobby, he would probably spend more than a person who takes his hobby lightly.

The money only helps the person fine tune his hobby...thats what i think.

Are you kidding? :bsmilie:

If you think photography is expensive, try going to visit a HIFI show this (2006) year at Hotel Meridian. They have it annually.
Bring some Panadol in case the prices give a fever.

The what about the car enthusiasts?
Bentley? Yikes!

What about the ah peks and Ah Sohs worshipping the 4 legged wonders at the Kranji Turf Club every weekend? Now, THAT is an expensive hobby. "...and here comes Emperor Ninety Five leading the pack...."

Not to mention the Genting Casino groupies who regularly drive there or go by tour bus. Small group of 3 friends lost Sing$70,000 in 1½ days. Also lost a lot of sleep. $70,000 can buy how many cameras?
That was 1 trip. What if they make many trips in 1 year.

The most expensive hobby of all and the worst.

DRUGS. :thumbsd:

You can lose you life. Not just your money.

wa you also notice about audiophile stuff, one pc interconnect can cost thousand...ssss of dollar buy already still no sound still need other expensive combination to achieve nirvana. Oh when when...

Yes, Yes, Yes.
Even with P&S, time spend & development cost (film or digital), stroage (take up resource/space) can be a lot for those who love photography. For those not so interest in photography, it an white elephant and will conclude "$$$" not worth it.
For real serious one, $$$ into equipment is only to increase chances of getting better pictures or pictures which are impossible without special lens.
Thinking back I started with basic film slr as gift received; and now with digital, the money spend per year is scary.

It is a matter of Needs, Wants, Desire. The chap who drives a Toy Altis would say how I wished he could upsize to a Camry.

In camera, the owners of the D70, D70s, D50 all would like to have the D200 as a Christmas present a month ago. And then, the cool 70-200VR lens.

Now, the thing is that an amateur doesn't really need the D200, nor the 70-200VR. It is only more convenient, easier to shoot with, these cool and expensive gear.

The trouble is that folks in this forum tends to egg on the newbies into Buy, Buy and more Buy. Sometimes it is the herd instinct, following the crowd or keep up with the Jones or the Ah Seng. I was very, very surprised by the result of a survey that a large majority want the D200 instead of the humble D70s.

Of course, you you're a Doc or for that matter any other profession making more than 150k/year, by all means all these are just small change for some new toys. But if you have to pay on credit and eat prata kosong and iced water, then, what is the point.

I think those who are in this long enough would know what to go for. I feel sorry for those who are relatively new and young and impressionable who are infected with this BBB virus.

One more thing - the gear voyeur - in any event, many photogs would peer at the next chap to compare gear, like thinking my lens pro and your entry level, my tripod CF, yours from Carrefour...... just like when you're standing at the urinal and peep at the chap next to you... mine bigger than yours.... ..:bsmilie:

of course photography is only for those with $$$.. imagine students like me that only get arnd $400-500 per month thru hard earn tution money, and somemore need to buy textbooks and upkeep ownself, in the end, if i squeeze maybe can get $100 out. Can u imagine how long it took to save up for a D50?
And can u imagine how long i have to wait if i want a 70-200vr? in my dreams probably..

you don't need to buy the best to get good pictures
P&S also able to get good results
You just need to spend time to get to know your equipment
in fact some award winning images are captured by Prosumer digicams
and I am not talking locally (international awards)

i'm hoping thats a good reason for me not to be tempted to do the most ridiculous things just to get a dslr ;) im pretty happy with my fz5. just hoping that my temptation will hold out till after ns or when im abit older and have enough $$$ to get a more expensive piece of equipment.

er yes correct. i do agree with you on that. and i get about $250 only +- expenditure, so yea, i feel the pain! but whatever it is, its just best to make do with what we have. i sure wish i had money to get a dslr but it doesnt seem to be the way. only time will tell.

not really. until now i still depends on friends for equipment.

I rather say it's only for those with TIME =)

i think every hobby has it's class.....

car hobbyist; one can buy a 20k+ vtec addon another 3k of misc accessories.. or, another can go for 350z roadster fairlady for 160k + 50k of tune up..

fashion hobbyist; one at queenstown $20 for a bargain jean + $3 for alteration.. another make his way down to a particular boutique to grab a few pairs of $500+ new series...

cheongster hobbyist; one at tanjong pager with 2 beer @ $40 + $10 lady drink.. another just next door accompany by some mamasan + pr goes with 2 bottles @ $380 each + $200 tips....

and the geylang hobbyist; one can go for.. erm.. another.... :bsmilie:

as for photography, yes i agree some equipments can cost a hefty sum way beyond reach, but i believe if you look into the range you belong, then majority of the pple wont hav a prob... it's a modern world, we hav to pay for wat we pursue, and most of the time money counts and it must made understandable that in every field, some tends to impress others, like a never ending race.... contented? ........ my 0.020187946 (with interest)... :bsmilie:

my inspirator......................
a new dslr......... $1600
cf card + 1 extra batt.......... $110.......
passion....... priceless
for something money cant buy, ..... please do not use money........... learn to enjoy your passion... unless your passion is going after ex stuffs... then
