Ho ho ho, smrt bus drivers go on strike

What is the pay for bus drivers in these countries?
Then what is the pay for fresh uni grads in these countries?

I think worth looking at bus fares in the same countries as well...

Actually you cannot compare directly like that. If you wanna do that, then look to the pay of bus drivers in Indonesia and Malaysia and compare that to pay received by uni grads in these countries.

There are many factors involve,

1) General Standards of Living in different nations
2) Population number in that nation (or city) which also translate to part of economic of scale.
3) general population's earning and spending power
4) maintanence of hardware and infrastructure (track, buses, MRT, stations, electricity, water, etc) - some nations had these subsidized by the government, some had to pay the whole lump sum themselves.

All the above mentioned would have effect on the salary received by the bus captains and operators. And in some countries, bus captains do earn more than fresh grad... So it is not a formula that people with higher education would earn more than people who are working in the field.

Almost every year, PTC will endorse the request from transport operators to increase fares. We are seeing steady climb of profit each year. I think more can be done to keep the workforce local.

Well, I really can't say I know enough to comment on the endorsement of fare increment. Understandably some may view profit as a dirty word but some amount of profit can and may be used to be ploughed back into companies' expenditure/development/renewal subsequently.

For the sake of discussion though, why do you think the workforce needs to be kept local? Also, if you raise the pay for bus drivers across the board to make it more attractive for locals, and then let's say there are no takers, what should the next step be? To reduce the pay abruptly then?

People, an evil omen has appeared.

Go to this latest report by Straits Times SMRT bus drivers from China return to work
There are 3 photos there, click on the middle one.
See the female ghost in the window.

Now i very scared to take bus, later some disgrunted employee decide to do something funny.:bsmilie:

Just check what is driving the bus before you embark on your night ride home.

Jump out if the bus detour to Bidadari Cemetery.

I know, I just want to start with a simple question first mah.

What if they unhappy and start thrashing things and riot? Who shall bear the responsibility for no preventive measures? Shows your small time mentality and inability to think of the big picture. You won't go far in life.

You got to be a maroon to even think they want to riot. Ho ho ho

Wait till Christmas. Christmas coming. Ho ho ho!

I bet they can't do anything to the PRC. They have strong backing from their own country.
We native Singaporean is worst, kanna bully and push to the edge.

Tired of this thread. Sian. Merry Christmas. Ho ho ho.

We heard of the problem the PRC drivers are facing in Singapore and how they felt they are not being treated fairly. The thing is... we have law in Singapore too, they could approach the Union, they could approach SMRT, they could approach many channels to voice their displeasure... of course we do not know if they have already done that already or not. That is why, I think we should wait till monday and see what is the reply SMRT would give to these drivers before we jump into conclusion that SMRT is pushing the drivers too far, or the drivers are going too far with the strike/ refusal to go to work/ etc etc.

And as far as any of us (unless you work in the SMRT or had infor from within SMRT) are concern, none of us know the full story of what is happening inside this case... so there.

As for complaining to the speaker corner, people charging service at below market rate and people wanting to give out their PSLE and GCE level cert or claiming to come from poor country or whatever, all all OT and had nothing to do with this thread. If there are so many displeasure with this country, anyone can leave the country and go home, or take matters up to higher level, go to speaker corner to make yourself heard, talk to MOM, whatever... but whatever the case, never ever take law into their own hand. Singapore is not China or Malaysia or Indonesia or whatever nations, we have a set of laws and we have law abidding citizens, PR and foreigners talents who wanted to live and stay in harmony and we do not appreciate some hotshots to disturb this harmony with whatever method they think is useful in their own nations.

For discussion purpose only. Let's talk about the foreign workers. These foreigners should be on 2-3 years contract. Afterwhich they may ask for more wages to be on par with others who are doing the same job or pack up and go home. Either way, the bus company will incur more cost. If the foreign bus driver chose to go home, you have to recruit and re-train the new staff. To keep these foreign bus captains happy over this long period of time, you have to provide relatively comfortable accommodation, basic leisure facilities which I read the present one is far from it. Then you cannot expect these nationals to be isolated. If they start a family here or want to bring their family for short stay, special arrangements have to be made. Else there will be more discontentment or fustrations . Add to the fact that this episode has already created resentment between the different nationalities. The issue of paying different nationalities different salary packages will always cause unhappiness among the workforce. The way forward perhaps is to standardize packages for all bus captains with the same job scopes.

So hiring locals is likely to have more continuity on the job, more cohesiveness within the company. Also if you add in the cost of providing a proper living environment which you do not have to do for the locals, the overall savings is not that great.

I believe the right amount of salary will draw people out from their shells. The question is how much more. Also, the profile of a local bus driver is likely to be in his 40-50s. It is probably unlikely we can get young chaps like those from PRC.

2.5k/3k = fresh degree grad pay.
If bus driver already paid that much, then the fresh grads would demand 5k minimum. Then everything else goes up.

When landlord increase rental fees, everything also goes up.
Nobody put a cap on rental because it depend on supply and demand.
Why do we put a cap on wages ?

Is it fair for fresh degree graduates to live on low wages when the cost of living increases ?

Maroon is a color Mr speak-good-english. It is an adjective, not a noun. Did you mean moron by any chance?

Yours sincerely, grammar Nazis.

so wrong ..... when on earth did having a degree mean higher pay ? A more steady and cushy job maybe... but not higher pay

My nephews (with ITE diplomas) are making alot more money doing plumbing and home electrical work than graduates in Auckland
