Precisely my pt :P They wont make a crop mode even though everyone wants it because that is the unique feature on the D2x

Why would they make something similar to D2X specs? ;p think about it.

The crop mode is however, damn useful, those who've used it will know ;p

I don't mind if there's a variable NEF sizing option, like 10, 8, 5, 3 tho'.

Totally agree - am waiting for some manufacturer to come up with a variable raw option.

Once that RAW file is variable , then the crop factor will differ.
a 12mpx sensor of 1.5x crop then become 6.8mpx when 2x crop ... so once we go into say 3mpx .. the crop will become 4x  .... headache headache .. cannot shoot wide then :(

Problem is that not many see it as important as I feel it should be done on the cameras. :( So sad, everytime have to shoot full size is a bit of a headache

Erm, think you miss the point that v123123 and I is talking about.

We're talking about the same image, but in lower res, nothing to do with FOV.

3MP @ 105mm will be the same as 12.4MP at 105mm, but a 3MP NEF would be easier for those who don't need 12.4MP. Geddit? It's nothing to do with HSCM.

I got the point, but won't that be a 'half cooked' image ? not RAW anymore ? :dunno:
as 12mpx sensor downsampled to a 3mpx first using the 12.8million photo pixels?

well unless they can re-think of a way to capture RAW at an altered resolution.

Alamak, that's what we're trying to say, variable NEF resolution but not HSCM!!!

It won't be half cooked.

I for one can see them at least doing it in multiples of 4 - use 4 pixels of input to output 1 pixel - so you can get something like 10MP, 10/4MP/ 10/16MP.

Perhaps with better technology, maybe they can even do it in 2s or 3s, or someday, a true variable raw image like what ESPN and I are talking about.

Reason for this is that you may not always need such big images, and its a headache to have to shoot at the highest res all the time, especailly when you know you confirm wont need it - save storage, processing time, cpu time etc.

mama mia .. who typed anything bout HSCM leh ?
obviously you as one of the Nikon council master has a subliminal thoughts implanted in your brain that if a 12 mpx down to 6.8mpx is then a D2x and those features automatically enables HSCM :bsmilie:

I concur. Not everyday we want to shoot a 12mpx images esp for happy family snaps, which will get blown to a max 5R anyway. But as a newbie and NEF nut, I have this thought that in-camera JPEG is much more inferior to a NEF converted JPEG on a computer.

IIRC, up this page, somebody typed the following, when me and v123123 was talking about variable NEF resolutions.

You didn't get the point here and still was thinking about copped mode and not in NEF format. Obviously, you missed the point. Totally.

Quit being a loser and use taunts to flame others. Me and v123123 all the while didn't talk about HSCM, you were the one with the sublimal thoughts and act smart trying to get one leg into the conversation even without realising what we in the first place was talking about and talking about 1.5 crop, 2x crop, 4x crop.

Again I refer to your post -

err .. so do I. iirc HSCM == High Speed Cropped Mode ?

my simple brain tells me that if you have 12.8 million photo sensor and you want a RAW output from it, you then 'switch off' the other 6million pixels and then use only the 6.8 mill pixels in the center hence it is then cropped to 2x.
and so if you want 3mpx res, you then switch of the rest 3.8mill pixel and then it will be cropped to 4x.

ps : I never had and have any intentions to flame ppl. For me, its a discussion with a few masters here and my ideas are thought too odd and not upto your level, I am sorry and I will just sit on the fence ;)

That's effectively, what me and v123123 is NOT talking about. Here you are talking about the same function the D2X can deliver, HSCM(s). So who's the one not in sync?

There are no masters really talking in this thread, they are the ones keeping quiet. I didn't think your ideas are odd, but your replies are without relation to what we're discussing.

Sit on the fence if you want, I don't blardy care.

Wah big flame war happening....

Anyway, what I was talking about is RAW output, not in-camera JPEG. In-camera JPEG reduction in size can already be found on almost any Nikon DSLR - see the JPG settings L/M/S :

• 3008 x 2000 (L)
• 2240 x 1488 (M)
• 1504 x 1000 (S)

I'm waiting... maybe D300 will have it???

D300.... wah, talk about planning ahead...
