Help: Nikon Cameras

It would be helpful if you could ask your parents, how much they are willing to spend the money for you.

<=$1000
$1000 - $1500
$1500 - $2000
>$2000

Then we would be able to find the best starter kit for you :)

I also dunno them yet. They wanna buy a camera, but probably not so soon? I guess below 1.2k shld be good. :)

do factor in the cost of a dry cabinet to keep fungus off your lens

Sorry I can't find the latest brochure for Nikon D5000 and Sony Alpha-A550, but I am pretty sure that price of those 3 cameras are about the same.

Note: if you purchase Sony Alpha, usually (from the previous exhibitions), they would give you free dry cabinet ;)
The problem is other than kit lens, Sony lens usually is expensive.

This is a sub-forum discussion on Nikon. Still need to talk about Canon?

As a matter of fact, most cameras are multi-purpose. Do you need to shoot at fast shutter?

I suggest D3100 to start since TS mention multi-purpose and you're helping your parents to think of getting one, esp for it's small size & light weighed for travel.

can consider Nikon D3100(coming), Canon 550D, Sony 550(or even the A200 series have good spec), Pentax KX.

I am a Nikon user, but I have tried 3 different system and not fanatic to a certain brand. I just give TS several options before he decides his own path.

I couldn't find brochure for Nikon D5000 latest promotion. Will post it ASAP once find it.

Hmm....i notice that quite a number of newbies started similar threads. Wonder is it the same person? Also, isn't that we wasting a bit of time answer those inquiries? All these information can be obtained by doing some reading and search. I am not against spoonfeed thing, however for info that can be easily fetched by doing few google and reading? Also, make me wonder, if the TS doesn't know anything about DSLR at this point (going to buy DSLR), how far can he/she go?

I might be wrong, but the next following question after the purchase will be how to use this function and that function, don't forget, some not really camera's fault inquiry....

Sorry to voice out my opinion, however, my intention is good, to conserve resources.

Hmm maybe because this week there will be COMEX 2010 at Suntec.

That's why.

(not-so) surprisingly, there are so many people owning same lenses and cameras. so are they clones of themselves? :dunno::dunno:

COMEX 2010 coming up... Canon and Nikon, as well as other maker make good cameras and lens... but you got to agree that for new-comers, Canon and Nikon present perhaps the widest range of 3rd party accessories and relatively large repertoire of affordable lens...

Since you're talking Canon and Nikon, there is essentially no difference between both of them are entry level... Canon 550D/1000D and Nikon D5000/D90 are all good camera... but since we are in Nikon sub-forum... Nikon D5000 would be good to start with :D

If you are buying a Nikon/Canon, you can usually get similar offers outside COMEX. I suggest you head to shops like MS Color or Alan Photo for more competitive prices.

A Nikon D90 or D3000 with kit lens is a nice buy.

Went Comex fair today. Went to check out nikon D5000 and canon 550D. Their handling feel is totally different, i like the handling feel of the D5000. But the 550D seems to have a larger LCD screen and better resolution. The Nikon D5000 comes with a attractive package, 1099 for D5000 kit + free gift such as dry box, tripod etc, top up 199 for a extra battery and a 200mm lens. Canon 550D is also at 1099, however the package are not as attractive as Nikon D5000 package.

Tried to physco my parents, but they said dun buy first. Probably wait for the next IT fair, which is end of the year i guess.

End of the year show (SITEX) is a smaller show compared to COMEX

You will most likely see the new D3100 however they bundle might not be as attractive.

Why you didn't visit Sony Alpha booth to try the Sony Alpha A-550 ?

Nikon D5000 and Canon 550D price won't be reduced within 3 months, as they have been released almost 1 year ago.

Whether you buy this week or 3 months later, the price would be the same, but will be less bonuses given .

You should be able to convince your parents.

Good luck ! :)

Prices for both Canon & Nikon won't change much anymore. But you do lose out on the bundle prices. There are still a few more days. Think very carefully though.. It's a bigger waste if you buy a DSLR and shoot everything on Auto mode. :)

As for resolution, don't forget that is the screen's resolution. :D
