Hello there folks,

Looking for someone to kindly give me some pointers.... Been trying to do IR photography on my D70 (Unmod) with a Cokin 007 filter to not the desired results... and kind of flabberghasted after many attempts.

Been reading Log1T3ch's thread and also the rest of the (Stickies) instructions on taking IR photos and PP but I cant seem to quite get it right. Checked that D70 can do this as well.

Had previously tried similar steps (with much longer exposure times) on my D40x + tripod and was successful....

Here's what I did on my D70....

1. Take a preset WB : Bright sunlight on a patch of green grass taken through the Cokin 007 filter.
2. Set to preset WB
3. Compose picture
4. Place the IR filter over the lense, auto exposure and shoot

Here's a result at ISO400, f/5.6, 1/15sec

Here's another shot at ISO200, f/5.6 & 1/4 sec

Problem is that I can't seem to get the starting pix in Log1T3ch's tutorial.... can anyone give me a pointer or two please ? What error did I make or steps did I leave out ?

Thanks in advance !!

your wb is still off.

i am also not sure what you have done, the picture is horribly oversaturated even for a wrong wb setting.

have you upped saturation levels in cam?

the wb is not set properly. try setting the custom white balance again.

................................
On D70, press the WB button and turn the command dial to PRE WB,
Press the WB button till the PRE WB is flashing,
aim you lens at a patch of green foilage under the SAME lighting you will be taking later,
ZOOM in and fill the frame with the green foilage
put on your IR filter on and press focusing lock,
fire your shutter, you should get GOOD for getting the correct PRE WB,
if shows No GD, adjust the shutter and aperture value till you get GOOD

once you get GOOD PRE WB, you are good to shoot, till the lighting changes
WB are different during sunny day and cloudy day, so you need to retake the PRE WB.

you should rely on LCD preview for correct exposure, not the camera metering system, so it is easier to shoot in manual mode rather than A or P mode in IR.

with IR filter on lens, it is better to shoot with tripod, you should spend some time set up the shots rather than wasting time shooting handheld and getting the all shots blur.

Bro looks like you need to put more effort on post process.
Play around with the Channel Mixer, Levels and also Curves.

Here try for you to get some idea.

Not sure if this is the problem ...

You need to SCREW ON the IR FILTER before doing the preset WB.

Didnt touch the saturation levels.... this is as downloaded from the camera. The same method of acquiring WB but with much longer exposures for my D40x works. Not sure why for D70 it seems to be like a normal sunlight WB without the IR filter.

Thanks very much :) and I do think I screwed up the custom WB.... just gotta figure out what I did not do right... :(

looks like you havent post process it. You need to change the color channel in photoshop. Check out the below thread on post processing.

Yes. Haaha..... This is before Post Processing cos the colours are all wrong and does not seem to be like the first pix in the thread. So something's gone wrong even before the PP is done. I'm trying to zoom in on the error bit but suspect (Like what Nightmare pointed out) that it is the preset WB setting.

Thanks for the comment and helping !

Haha.... Thanks. That's a check, the filter is ON before doing the WB ! ;p

Thanks ! This is very good details. I will attempt this again this weekend. Appreciate the input and steps ! :)

Hmmm.... Ok. Thanks for trying the PP. Really appreciate that.

I think the problem lies with what I need to do before the PP cos the starting pix is too far off from the starting product in Log1t3ch's instructions. I get a red coloured photo which aint right...... Should be whitish base through the IR filter if the WB is set correctly in my opinion..... But I will try out the PP again on a couple more other photos again later.

Thanks !! :)

Actually I encounter such problem some times back when I was playing IR with my D70s.
I can't remember the details but it is either
- I forget to screw on the IR filter while doing preset WB
- or I forget to screw on the IR filter when taking picture.

The end results is like your pic here , totally reddish picture.
I do a re-shoot and it works out fine. :)

I think most importantly is to make sure the Pre WB shows "GOOD" before you start to shoot. When I started out using my un-mod D70s in the beginning, I made the same mistake too on the preset WB. Keep it up TS and once you get it right, you will be "Wow-ed" by the first photo you take. ;)

BINGO ! Ha.... was the WB presetting that was off. I didnt check for the GOOD or NO GOOD and intermittently got good and bad results.... ;p

Thanks Catchlight ! I GOT IT !

Appreciate those who contributed in one way or another !

Here's my final test shot after PP. Looks more like the IR results expected now....

Without tripod at about 1/2 to 1 sec at f/4.5 & ISO200.....

Now for me to go shoot some more.... and practice...

;)

also facing what you faced at first. so its take a custom white balance of a bright grass patch with the ir filter on.Then take off the it filter to take the picture. Or take a custom white balance without the ir filter, then take a picture with the filter on?

1. Take the WB via a bright green patch of sunlit grass WITH the IR filter on
2. When the WB is set, take the photo with the IR filter on

Depending on the camera, you might need to have the filter off to compose before shutter release and may also need to have a manual aperture+shutter setting.

My D40x needs a tripod, long exposure (>15 secs mostly), manual mode while my D70 can be handheld, short exposures (Like <0.5 sec) and aperture mode.

Hope this helps !
