Happiness - in Singapore?

It is normal to be happy some of the time, unhappy some of the time and neutral (neither happy or unhappy some of the time). One cannot be happy all of the time. Find the Gross Happiness Index of Bhutan to be unreal and too motherhood-statement. A bit flaky.
In exceptional circumstances e.g. war time, of course people are not happy.

Security, health, material wealth, good relationships are factors.

Oh... you do find people who are smiling on the streets of Singapore... but then... I'd be very wary those...

:bsmilie: Either that, they must be having their headphones on...

Brings back the old cliche... "When in Rome, do what Romans do." "When in Singapore, do what Singaporeans don't do...(and that is to smile)"

Speaking of that, reminded me of a rude culture shock when I returned to Singapore after being 4 years away... First thing that came to my mind was..."wah....peeps here are pretty uptight huh?"....

Maybe you have not been to Russia,North Korea,Poland,London.;p Want friendly faces n warm hospitality,go to Iran,Syria,Bhutan,Myanmar,East Timor,Yemen,Bangladesh,Nepal......

Happiness is to be satisfy with the image quality of your camera and stop burning a big hole in your wallet buying gears you don't use :)

Happiness is to be able to get greatly satisfying picture from my humble camera with an old beat-up lens. And guess what, laughing at the next guy with a pro-FX camera and the best trinity lens who is struggling with his setting to get a good shot.

The simple pleasures are the greatest pleasures.

Oh, I've been to UK, I know how friendly they can be - go for a morning walk, a passerby (stranger) can give you a nice "Good Morning" with a friendly smile, which in return you'd do the same... Same for most parts of USA.

In fact, I was so used to that for 4 years straight, when I returned to SG... that's why I mentioned the "culture shock" I've received... Here, take a ride in the MRT in morning... everyone looked like they are taking their last ride to hell... Similarly everyone you've passed while on your way to have your breakfast...

it seems the answer here is happiness more like the rapture one derived from doing or having something. It should go way beyond just that.

And this sounds and looks very chim to me.

I saw lots of happy faces in an average restaurant like Long Beach with lots of laughter.

Next thing, guess what? The happiest place on earth - Disneyland. Well, up to you to believe it or not.

Really... don't expect too many smiles in areas where the pace of life is on high gear all the time... You can get genuine smiles in Singapore... I suspect in the "rural" areas, visit the vegetable farms, etc, etc...

While I said people in UK can be friendly, but not in London I'm sure...outskirts, small towns, farmlands, you get plenty of warmth there...

Major cities around the world, should be probably on high gear all the time, due to people wanting to earn big bucks. The more pressure you mount on yourself, the less smiles you put on your faces... normal human reaction to the word "stress"...

I agree, small-town/village friendliness is often genuine (well, even that is slowly disappearing)

that western-style friendliness (especially in the cities) is mostly politeness and skin-deep only .....sometimes even fake.... true friendship, be it in the West or the East, does not need sunny smiles...

That's very true... but we do need "smiles" to spread happiness... :bsmilie: Imagine the best of your friends come to you everyday with that totally glum and unfriendly look...

ha ha lets not discuss extremes where all-day smiles are compared against all-day-blackfaced-n0-smiles :)

either extreme is too emo

be happy when you are happy, be gloomy when you feel down ..... God's given us a whole set of emotions that should not be masked over with a perpetually sunny smile day and night

ambition
expectation
needs
wants

if all 4 are met, then happy ... :)

Are you telling me if a certain Siggie 100-300 lands in your hands right now (all paid for) you won't feel a pinch of happiness??? Please stop preaching the higher good when we're all guilty of indulging in the current classification of happiness... :bsmilie:

That certainly brings about a tremendous amount of satisfaction for me and maybe for others, happiness.... you getting one soon?:bsmilie:

hmmm.... come to think of it, it seems like I am preaching there, anyway that is just my thought and not meant for someone else since I am struggling here abit too. :)

Nah... I'm happy with my current bamboo... :bsmilie: That's the limit I've set for myself, I won't look further than that already... "ambition" met... :bsmilie:

happiness is - when I am sad, there are friends and family noticing it and coming over to cheer me up :)

Yeah,
so uptight that when they back up against a brick wall, their rear ends can suck out a brick. Hehe.

all day smiles reminds me of my short visit to the IMH:think:

I can understand why some of us chose to move to overseas while some chose to remain here... Frankly, there are pros and cons to either options - sacrifices we make and benefits we get. It's a matter of how much of the pros matters to each over the cons we have to endure. It works out for some, while not for others... A risk each and everyone makes, and have to live with for the rest of their lives. Stay or Move, there can be happiness in either if you know where to look... but rest assured, each option comes with its fair share of "pain" and "suffering"... It is how you chose to accept the latter... You can't have the cake and eat it.

Where ever you are, just make the best of your happiness found - cheerish what you DO have and not yearn obsessively of what you don't. Strike a good balance in your life (sacrifices made versus TRUE happiness gained). Look at yourself MORE than you look at others (what you truely have that's worth living for).

Notice that the last paragraph can easily apply to what DSLRs and Lenses you already have... :bsmilie:

Happiness = waking up in the morning

why is this happiness? I think waking up in the afternoon then is happiness, meaning no need to wake up in the morning to go work.

Smiling doesn't mean the persons are happy. In Japan, people always smile when providing service but the stress level is the world highest. I dun think Japanese are happy people.
