Hands-on with Pentax K-r :)

hey bro....

i don't know, i think the fog helped with the exposure quite a bit, but basically, with concentrated lightsources it won't be too hard to get the starlight effect via small aperture :)

that was f/11

Thanks. Your pics are great as usual.

you are using live view to take telephoto shots?

if you are doing it handheld, you are going to have problems for sure.

maybe watch this instead:

this is one reason why i don't want to get a EVIL camera... TTL VF > EVF, and that handholding method >>>> anything you could do handheld with live view.

thanks :)

more k-r photos, at iso100 or 200, sigma 10-20.

it's a joy to be able to see your photo immediately when you click the remote in bulb mode. :)

Hmm, i called emjay up and asked for the pre-order pricing. They quoted me $910 for KR + 18-55.
But over here, Frank claims it's going for <USD500 with kit lens. SGD910 vs USD500 is a monster big difference, so what gives? I'm guessing that USD500 is supposed to be the true pre order pricing aka. for those really early birds so that's why the price is higher now.

please read properly.

that's for the K-X , not the k-r

anyhow quote, tsk... please don't spread misinformation here - and kindly think of the potential impact this dogged determination to find out the pre-order price (against good advice) will lead to.

Is there a 2-kit lens set for the K-r with the 55-300mm? I emailed emjay but they only stated the 50-200mm kit.

Beautiful shots as always

Beautiful shots as always

thanks.

for those asking about the k-r.... from the day i bought it till now, i just had to charge it.

think it took about 200+ shots, but there was extensive use of live view (higher angle with max tripod height beyond my eye level), and lasted about 4-5 shooting sessions throughout 1+ week.

performance wise, i'm well pleased. it definitely doesn't have much juice compared to the k20d battery, but this is an entry level cam.

now, anyone knows where to buy spares? OP doesn't have any, i just called.

Had the K-r for almost 3 weeks and today was the 1st time really done some shooting.
Went to Little India today with bros FengWei, Loke & another gentlemen (must pardon me for forgotten his name.)

The followings were shot with Tamron SP Di 90mm/2.8 Macro. Setting was mostly AV & Macro setting on the K-r and most pics are cropped.

just a quick snapshot taken because i couldn't coax the cat out of the basket... :) i didn't want to keep it, but just to showcase capabilities of the k-r to retain detail even under low light conditions.

iso3200, f/2.4, 1/30 second, with the 50mm f/1.4. no post processing done whatsoever.

more cityscapes/night shots with the k-r. such a joy to use.

5128678716_8cfbf8501a_o.jpg

this one was done at iso 800, amazingly clean. i used a higher iso to take care of the people/car streaks that i didn't want in the photo... so a faster shutter speed was required. also, extending the shutter speed would lead to funny result for the screen on wilkie edge.

just testing out the hdr(auto) mode. pretty good, much better than k20d implementation. of course, i did my own tweaking as well.

and my first sunset taken with k-r. here the multiexposure mode was used, therefore allowing me to smoothen out the water without having to resort to a nd110 and do a 8 minute exposure.

such a beautiful camera with many useful features.

ephotozine has just published its review of the Kr.
A very positive review.

Summary :

Pentax K-r: Verdict
We have a well made, fully specified, compact and efficient camera in the Pentax K-r. It is attractive in appearance and handles beautifully. It can hold its head high in the company of higher priced rivals from the main manufacturers and also offers advantages in image quality, lens quality and extensive backwards compatibility. The excellent near-infra-red performance will please some buyers, as will the multiple power source options.

The lens is excellent and gives a tempting introduction to the qualities of the rest of the range. Only weatherproofing is missing, but that would not make a better performing camera.

I have no doubt that the K-r is a worthy contender for our cash. For existing Pentax users there is no better option at this price level, for those new to Pentax I firmly believe they will be impressed. For those considering an EVF DSLR then a consideration here is that the K-r is not really that much more bulky and it does offer much better battery life, a superb optical viewfinder and a much wider choice of lenses.

The conclusion is that Pentax have a new and exciting product here that offers excellent performance and is very well priced to compete in the marketplace. Highly recommended.

Nice sunset. May I know what setting did you use to capture the beautiful sunset?
