GR Digital II announced

From my shopping around so far, GRD2 is only 1 yr in Singapore. Not sure about HK prices but expect either camera to be cheaper than the 900-1100 dollar price range we see here.

Hi, I just got my GRD2 today at Alan Photo, paid $1,016 w/gst ($950 wo). Must say its a real beauty, even better than the pix of the cam suggest. Held the GX100 briefly but it just didnt feel right. The GR2 had the heft and felt eminently more portable. Sadly, the price did not include any freebies, no case (perhaps for the better since it adds bulk). Also didnt get any hood, adaptor ring etc. but don't care because I first want to try the camera just as it is, b4 leaping into any pricey add-ons.

I think I have a good eye at composing pictures but my technical knowledge is crap, but this is one camera where I think you cant help but take good pictures once you know the basics of f-stops and ISO and judging light conditions. Love the colors it produces, cool and rich at the same time.

Anyway, can anyone direct me to a good site (maybe right here) where I can quickly commit some photography guidelines to memory. Thanks

Congrats, Rurouni on your new toy! :)

Btw I am curious, did they release a new wide angle attachment for the GRD II? Or is it the same one for GRD's GW-1?

same as GRD. It gives the same 21mm

Heh thanks Anne :) I'm planning to make good use of this little toy. Certainly its giving me more opportunities to shoot than anything else I have in my camera equipment list just due to its small size.

As for the wide angle adaptrer, according to the manual its the GW-1 for the GRD2. I'm more interested in the GT-1 however as I shoot more in 35mm than 28mm.

GRD2 is certainly proving to be a really fun camera. Are you guys shooting jpeg or RAW? I'm trying to find a good raw editor to work with the Ricoh.

congrats on ure new purchase. the ricoh GRD for me has been a real joy to use and feels like a real photographic tool. I personally shoot jpeg on my orginal GRD

So,

Only cathay photo can buy with 0% installment? any other dealer provide installment plan? cos my AWS still not enuf for that:(

TKS!

Yeah! So tat means I can get my wide angle soon! ^^

I am shooting in jpeg too. Unless I can get a bigger SD card to shoot in raw. If not it will never be enuff...

Hi ighwee, you can try MS color! They accept more UOB while Cathay don't. Hope this helps! :)

so how has the noise levels in GRD-2 been? :)

lets see some iso400 and above pics leh!! :D

I can't wait for the 40mm adapter. It should work really nicely in 1:1 ratio for some nice portraits. I'm shooting RAW now and am going to try either Silkypix or Bibble (when they support Ricoh DNG) as part of my workflow. (I have lightroom but for some reason its not working ever since I upgraded my Mac OS : /)

Anne you can pick up a SDHC 4gig card from Sim Lim for aroud 69bucks now, pretty worth it can shoot lots :)

Vortex noise levels are very good up to ISO200. ISO 400 is also ok but I suspect can be very good once I try out a RAW convertor with good NR control. ISO800 is usable (and very usable for B&W) but again, as with all small sensor cameras, don't expect DSLR noise levels. I have been adding shots in my flickr link above, you can check it out if you'd like.

Are a lot of GRD/GRD2 users on Flickr? Maybe we can set up a SG-GRD Users group too!

well im a GRD user as well....just curious if they have improved the noise issues in grd-2 :)
i shoot on iso400 quite often personally...

Yes the noise levels are slightly improved on the GRD2. White balance is also very accurate now. I'm trying out Lightzone now to see if I can achieve good post-processing on NR on the higher ISO shots.

I tend to keep the ISO up to 200 for now. But for B/W I think the camera is easily usable up to ISO800.

Im really interested in the GRD2. But, im actually kinda considering F50fd vs GRD2.
Price is of no concern but of cos' value is. I actually have an F31fd already but my gf's hogging it so looking for a new cam.

Shall I try the GRD2 next? Anyone knows where I can use my Citibank CC for a 12 months installment to purchase the GRD2?

hi eclenikon, both are cameras tat will give you a total difference experience. GRDII has a prime fix focal length camera. if optical zoom is very impt to you, GRDII might bug you a little. but to me, I hardly use zoom in a PnS camera.

F50fd seems like a very all rounded and typical PnS camera... if you need something easy to use, always ready to turn-on-and-shoot, it seems like fuji is a better choice.

But since you already got the F31fd, why not get GRDII? You guys can always swap camera to use! :)

Btw, anyone manage to get the GW-1 recently?! I have been running around shops like Cathay, Alan and MS color but all out of stock :(

The F31 according to what I read has slightly better noise patterns than the F30. The GRD2 is vastly different from most point n shoots. If low ISO noise is your no.1 priority in a compact cam, then the F31fd is the best bet because out of the box, Fuji's SuperCCD and software does a nice NR job.

The GRD2 is all about flexibility, this is what I've found after using it a couple of days, its like a DSLR in terms of speed of operation and amount of customisation and control you have but with a compact sensor limitation which you have to get around. That being said, the way the Ricoh engineers have tweaked the sensor on the camera makes it a very good one.

So its a toss up, if you like casual shots, as little post processing as possible, get a F31fd or buy your gf the F50 (now got offer) and use the F31fd. If you would something a little closer to a DSLR in control, then GRD2 would be an interesting option. However, YMMV, so please do bring an SD card and go down to the shops to try the feel and the images of each camera out first. That's what I did, spent 2 months researching before I bought the GRD2.

Anne, I didn't get the GW-1, waiting for the GT-1, you can try TK foto see if they have. I may go down to TK on thursday, will check it out if I have time :)

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if you could see the photo here and advise if the 'halos' coming from the street lights are normal for this sort of night shot? I seldom shoot at night so have no experience on how street lamps will turn out.

Example shot here:
