Giving up Photography completely

Hey everyone, chill... chill.

Don't let my pessimism and problems get to u all.
you are welcome back anytime ... with or without a camera ...

actually, will keep your seat warm for you ... just pop in now and then

Be Happy!

PM me anytime

Ever had that feeling where someone stripped u naked, locked u in a dark room, turned off all the lights, threw away the key and u see at a corner a pack of ravaging fierce dogs waiting to snap ur privates off?

U can't run cos the room's locked.
U can't fight cos even if u win, u'll be all bloody, medical care denied and u'll die of injuries.
U can't scream cos its a sound proof room and screaming will sap ur strength.
Sitting there can't do anything to help either since it means the pack of dogs would eat u with great relish.

have u read Daniel in the lion's den before?

I suggest praying

sigh.. after reading it.. seems like i got this idea of giving it up too.. i do feel tired by this hobby.

hobby supposed to do the opposite :embrass:

instead of getting tired, shld be getting more and more addicted/ fun / unsatisfiable / thirsty / jump-out-of-the-bed-in-the-morning-feeling-excited-in-Monday feeling

Hi jsbn,

I have not read all posts to your thread.

I simply saw the thread and noticed it was you that created it.

I don't know what your reason for feeling this way is and I am not asking to know.

What ever the reason, I would like to think that you will overcome it.

I say this with a cold/selfish point of view .............

I have seen your magnificent work many times and dream of your tallent.

Don't deprive us of viewing your great camera skills.

I hope this comes across to you as I feel it.

Cheers :)

I once gave up shooting and sold everything I owned (which was a pretty large collection of Nikon primes and medium format cameras) because I was faced with a serious ceiling that I could not break through and was burnt out trying to better myself. But a few years later, at a photo exhibition in Japan, my passion was fired up again and since, I have bought a complete system again, but no longer shooting professionally, at most freelance.

If your reasons are creative stumble blocks, maybe lockup your dry cab and not touch photography for a period of time or well, sell your gears and buy them later... but more importantly, give yourself a break from pushing yourself creatively and overcoming the burn out.

But if the problems is deeper than this and has got to do with things with the family or relationship (marriage), then I think you should sit down and make a resolution of what you can do to find that balance between pursuing your art and family. The problems with the heart is a real problem that requires the heart (your full attention) to solve.

I do not know the true reasons and neither will I speculate further. What I am sharing is from my own experience over the last 20 years and I hope this can shed some light to your situation.

damn, seldom do I find something I can agree with student.

jsbn, the most important thing is, be happy, lead a happy life. So, if photography is part of it, great, if not cie la vie.

Wither way, wish you best of luck, and BE HAPPY!

Hahaha...

Isn't Student suppose to be on your ignore list?:bsmilie:
Life is empty without him, Right?

To TS:

I wish you well.

As I wrote (above), I do not wish to know what bought you to thinking this way,

But as microcosm mentioned, " But if the problems is deeper than this and has got to do with things with the family or relationship"

Then maybe I might offer a suggestion ..... (though it is easier for me to say than maybe for you to do).

If you have holidays oweing to you.... take them.

Just find a small island somewhere with few people.

Take a tent, some basic food and just wander around.

Keep away from people. just be with yourself.

You will get up early and go to bed early.
During the day you will mentally talk to yourself.

You will come to answers that will create direction and free your mind.

Believe me if you will, it works. (just be away from people and eat vegetables for a week).

Cheers :)

Thnx to all of u even though I did not really properly explain my situation (but I dun wish to talk abt it).

microcosm: Actually its a combination of both emotional and inspiration where my emotions affect my inspiration. Right now, its extremely unbalanced as I struggle with my emotions on certain things. Thnx for the prop & support.

Pablo: Thnx for the 1 up. I had once thought of packing up and heading to Yonaguni Islands in Okinawa to camp in the past for astrophotography. But right now, as things are slowly sinking in and the pain is somewhat hurting, I'll wait for things to blow over first and I'd calmed myself sufficiently and re-prioritised things before taking on a solo meditative trip to seek myself, my future and perhaps to regain the drive I had with photography hopefully to push me to new heights.

Paul: Continue with ur polls in 2007. I'm sure everyone enjoyed those polls. And yes, though I'm classified as a 'backslider' (that's over 10yrs ago), I remembered the story of Daniel & The Lions clearly. Thnx for ur light.

you can take the camera away from the photographer, but you cannot take the photographer away from the camera!

naww...that doesn't sound right. anyway....

even if you decide to give up photography 'forever', hope you can find another avenue of expression and excel in it. on the contrary, it may be the "art of thought and philosophy" which may help you pull through whatever situation you are in right now. it may help you take a step back and realise how absurd life can be sometimes. see the bigger picture, zoom out! use a wider lens! BBB! :bsmilie:

Hope you can say "I'll be back!" like the terminator

probably less stressful if you shoot for fun rather than for perfection

If the stress comes from perfection, I can handle that (since I'm no perfectionist).

The ever lingering thought looms like a dark shadow and its even darker now. Somehow, some other things just simply tires me a little to the extent I dun want to think abt it.

Something beyond just free/cheap shoots which I had developed my way of handling it.

Something else... emotionally draining.

could it be like me? my wife dont allow me to shoot models anymore since the flaming on the shoot on Motorshow. The CFO controlling you? Relax lah... got a lot of other subject to shoot. Haha. Whatever, just take care hor. Most ppl i know of that give up photography and came back will have their skills improved tremendously. (going to the mountains to meditate maybe)

I'm not sure how to put it either in words. But hopefully this would give u all an insight on my problems. I saw this scene earlier on and shot it. Probably my last one for 2006. And perhaps my last one.

i don't know what you're going through and what's going on. but base on this, i think that you'll return to photography. good luck :)

maybe u have depression?

depression is actually pretty common in today's society.

or it is extreme loneliness? having a lot of friends or having family members dun solve problem of loneliness. a person can feel lonely even in crowded places or gathering among friends or with wife/gf.

I'm so lost in this discussion.
Is there a danger in taking photographs that we don't know about but has been revealed to jsbn? I don't understand :( Please share before it's too late!

Fame and everybody wants you to shoot their photos are the danger. :)
