although can easily tell it's a guitar, but it would be nicer (I feel) if I could see his right arm and thus more of the guitar.
Nice expression captured though! :)

Yes! Astute observation there. I had a whole series of captures and not a single one with the whole guitar! I like to shoot close, but in this instance, perhaps i was too close. LOL! Got caught by the wonderful expression, didn't think to take a step back... was shooting with my prime then.

Too garish?

The kind of image these days i would process as B&W:

Agfa Rodinol Processing

NOTE:

Over time it is natural for our style of photography to change and right now, i'm leaning back to my roots
and abstract photography. Well, this picture for example may not be for everyone, but i like!

Those who processed in B&W would know the Agfa Rodinol's developer that produces golf ball (an exaggeration)
sized grains! Miss those days.

Hey Wildcat! BTW, that photo was taken during ZCA's outing at the Esplanade and the first time i "met" you. We didn't talk coz i was too busy guiding the newbies and i think you came slightly later. I missed the TCSS session after that as well.

As for the borders, i'm still manually doing mine. In the first few pages you will notice my white border is much thicker than it is now. After a while, i feel that a thinner white border followed by a thicker black one just looks classier. Subjectively speaking of course. I use the adjust canvas size in photoshop to do it. Current formula is 0.5cm white + 2cm black. I'm sure there's a way to convert this into "actions" and then can easily run but it's so easy that i just haven't got around to recording the actions yet.

Oh okay. I thought we did talk, coz I was taking some long exposure shots of Marina Bay (with ND filter) taking 3-4mins of light trails and I thought you were beside me.

I am also doing it manually, sometimes I use Faststone... but now looks like revert back to manual again.

I like some of these B&W pictures. How did you render the photos into B&W?

I use photoshop. Image>Adjustments>Black and White. Then adjust the different colour channels to my liking. For that photo, i added a vignetting effect to simulate tunnel vision to complement the subject. Also adjusted for brightness and contrast coz i like contrasty B&Ws. Been considering the nikeffects that Numnumball is using but $300 feels kinda steep.

Correct me if i'm wrong but you are using the D5000 right? I nearly got my hands on one but the seller backed out. What do you think of the shutter noise? Is it silent enough for discrete street photography? I like the articulated LCD screen so i don't have to look at the viewfinder. I'm looking for a DSLR for low light. I'm thinking of moving on to night street photography and i need a relatively silent DSLR for that. Ken Rockwell mentioned that the D5000 shutter is as quiet as a rangefinder so i'm intrigued. Should i continue my pursuit of it in the B&S section...

Okay, Nik software makes it easier to convert to a more contrasty B&W. I started off doing it by hand, but the control Nik effect gives is phenomenal. Still, I'm not sure if I will pay $300 for it either

Yep, I am using the D5000. Not sure about the noise; the only time I have ever appreciated it was during a closeup night dance performance event where the shutter noise would have been distracting to the dancer (and audience). I set it on Quiet mode, and it was really quiet. When shooting outside, the noise of shutter don't bother me (heck, I have my autofocus beep set on and that's way louder).

Yup, $300 is wayyyy too steep for me and i think Photoshop already handles it very well even though i'm using CS3. I want to upgrade to CS5. Also, i see people mentioning the Silver Efex software? Is it part of the Nik suite?

Sounds like the D5000 is the ultimate DSLR for streets! How fast is the focussing with the articulated LCD? I'm using the D90 and it's pretty slow when using the liveview mode. Any problem using the LCD to focus on say a moving object or person?

Lonely Walk Home

NOTE:

I processed to really bring out the tones in this one. Had to be careful to essentuate
the man's shadows and not lose the highlights too much since a part of the sky is
already blown. It was after a rainfall and the wet ground was challenging but really
adds to the lonely mood of the picture i feel. Tears from heaven...

When talking about Nik software, I think most of us referring to Silver Efex portion (this stems from the interest coming from Kit->r00ki3->me->NNB->you) but I know Kit has started playing around with some of the other software recently. Other than Silver Efex, I use Viveza sparingly (only when I need a tight area contrast change, etc, involving non-solids such as clouds).

Other than Panasonic's micro four-thirds cameras, I don't think any of the Liveviews have good fast focusing. This stems from that our DSLRs use Phase detect while Liveview uses Contrast detect to focus, and that is just slow. Not sure how Panasonic did it, but they sure did it right, and being their main selling point, I doubt they are going to share their secret with the rest of the camera makers ;)
