NOTE:

A point of view is that street photographers play an important role in preserving the memory of a community/society's culture and traditions because they capture moments that reveal something about the nature of human existence at a particular place and time. No doubt concepts such as culture is dynamic and changing. Still, it is of value to preserve its idiosyncratic moments if only so that future generations will know where the previous generations have passed through to reach that point of time. With this in mind, it brooks a certain style of capturing images - people in their context rather than just people out of context because the interaction of human beings with their environment reveal a lot about their believes, values and ideology.

There is a street photographer whose work i am following with much interest. His name is Markus Hartel. Currently he is travelling around America to document the daily lives of Americans. This is the website if you're interested to follow his journey with me:

In a sense, we are luckier because Singapore is such a small country, we don't have to spend lots of money in travelling like Markus does. And i don't buy the perspective that there is nothing interesting to shoot here either. It's just that we take many things for granted and must see beyond the mundane and recognise that the image has potential and is worth preserving. Think in 20 years, 30 years or 50 years from now, how will that subject have changed. Will it even be around anymore? So... what are you waiting for! There's a street outside your door just waiting to be captured and preserved for posterity. ;)

Hmm... I quite like the compression for this. Btw what bordering software are you using? I've been meaning to get something other than doing manual borders for mine all the time.

Hello man, I see all your photos coz I'm starting to try taking some street candid. One thing I notice is you seem to capture different expressions and emotions. Something I don't come across that often when i take it to the streets.

Just curious, I was a little concerned if I shoot the person, the person might be annoyed. Not everyone likes to be shot, especially if you are concerned whether u may appear unglam. Any incidence of people being annoyed with you?

Hey Wildcat! BTW, that photo was taken during ZCA's outing at the Esplanade and the first time i "met" you. We didn't talk coz i was too busy guiding the newbies and i think you came slightly later. I missed the TCSS session after that as well.

As for the borders, i'm still manually doing mine. In the first few pages you will notice my white border is much thicker than it is now. After a while, i feel that a thinner white border followed by a thicker black one just looks classier. Subjectively speaking of course. I use the adjust canvas size in photoshop to do it. Current formula is 0.5cm white + 2cm black. I'm sure there's a way to convert this into "actions" and then can easily run but it's so easy that i just haven't got around to recording the actions yet.
