Geylang, street photography tour

We are talking about Singapore. Not banana republic. I have no heard of a single story when a reporter or photographer was attacked in Singapore.
Yes I have got abused few times which is part of the job.

Even geylang should be safer than new york and London.

if you say so. I experience first hand every now and then cos it's part of work :)

I am in buddy.... :)
se you on sat... but i believe a little early would be gud say 3:00pm

if kamal is in, that makes 3 of us, if you wanna push thru, rahluv... how bout we go there around 1pm, blend with the crowd, have late lunch there... then shoot...

lets do it. lets meet at alJunaid MRT at 3 PM. this Saturday

i won't say that this is a great idea. you might get more than what you bargained for

On one of the few occasions I went shooting in Geylang alone, I saw an old man stumble out of the corner kopitiam on Lorong 20 (well-known "hotspot").
He had been beaten up.

Just a friendly word of caution.

Dont worry too much. Part and parcel of a street photographer. Experience it first hand.

Be cautious of surroundings, use a compact camera, wear good pair of running shoes and best if you can look like a tourist.

Good luck!

haha, i am sure you haven come across the case where a photographer was attacked at fort canning, leaving him bruised and injured... just need to be becareful when you are shooting with gears costing up to a few Ks... everywhere is the same...

I went to geylang last weekend. Its not as ultra crazy as people make it sound(it IS a little crazy though :P). As long as you know where to point your camera and where not to.
I ventured into an area where I started getting funky stares and thats exactly when I knew I have overstayed my welcome. This was around 8 in the NIGHT! you should be perfectly fine during the day. Got this while there -

Used a fuji x10. I suppose a small discreet camera is definitely the way to go, while there. I strictly stayed off the backalleys.

It's not as scary as what you think. I would say shoot and go. Best if you know how to shoot from the hip and pretend to be a tourist.

Face on with the meat seller.

Guys send me your number so that we can coordinate

3-10 guys jumping into the deep end of a swimming pool together does not mean nobody will drown .... even if 1 or 2 in the group are 'lifeguards'

stay safe guys and use common sense

p/s When you enter the realm of Geylang and what it stands for, you're moving away from photography and into social anthropology study/observation (with a camera) I suggest looking for a 'storyline' or 2 rather than just capture random images

yah... come out of themes...

if u are feeling adventurous and dangerous... then do some documentary shoots of activities behind those shop houses (those make shift gambling dens, etc)

if u want to play safe

or use a long zoom lens to capture those night workers at work.

Hey TS
if you're going, can you let me know?
Would like to tag along too

Thanks~
