I rather get all at 1-go and bite the bullet. Not into poisons; just get what is necessary and thereafter, focus on improving skills and not worry abt hardware.
Should be able to last me 2 yrs with what I've got.

I think the nikkor pro lens use 77mm so safe.

You also need a full filter kit set(GND, polariser, B+W hydrophobic filter), a telephoto(70-200mm AF-S F/2.8 VR). But for the 70-200 you might want to hold off for a while, cus today nikon is having the press conference in china right now, who knows, a new 70-200mm is launched?(about freaking time.)

This is precisely what my thoughts were 2 years ago ; and that D80 kit of mine lasted only 3 months

no worries.....I know getting into the N & C camps require lots of will-power to resist poisonous temptations but at most, I will be a semi-serious shooter. Am not into macros, birds, animals, studio-shoots etc..... just for travels and street-photography.
I got the 77mm filter for my future acquisitions actually.

Yes, I did consider getting a 70-200mm VR f2.8 lens and that's next on my wish-list.
For now, a 17-55mm will do. Not going to FX yet till maybe 2-3 years time.
I'm still a novice but decided to get a semi-pro/advanced DSLR to contain the BBB virus.
If I bought the D40/D90 models, I will end up getting a D300 within a few months.
I too have similar observations in B&S forum where many CSers sell cams/lenses only months
after acquiring them.

My lens wishlist?
- have gotten a used 50mm f1.8 months back from my bro
- soon (in day or 2): 17-55mm as a walkabout lens for my travels and casual shoots
- next aquisition: maybe a 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens
- future aquisitions: either a 50mm f1.4 or 85mm
The rest like 12-24mm, fisheye lens etc... are luxury lens for me.

So, any comments for a mint 1.5yo 17-55mm lens going for $1500?

With almost 500 more, you get a brand new 17-55mm f/2.8 and 1 year warranty.

You decide whether its worth it. But personally i'll get the new lens.
