can tell me "why not need to sleep" ?

busy shooting ?

busy playing with new toys - d300 and 17-55mm ;p

I think I 'found' 2 issues while playing last night:
1. Focus Issue with 17-55mm. Took 30+ shots of my kids and when playback on the LCD, they dont look sharp. Anyway, not doing anything abt it till I am familar with the cam, the menus, etc...
Printed the focus-test materials and will try out when I'm ready

2. During playback, the cam just 'blacked out'. Had to press the 'Playback' button again to view the pics. This happened several times. Decided to Power off & on; problem disappeared. It may happen again though...

That's all for now....been reading manual, ebooks, and reading Focus issues.....quite daunting actually. So much to explore and learn....:sweat:

Well, I myself felt this is the challange of the 'dark side'.

hope that the less than stellar focus issue has been resolved using the test chart... that is it was just your focusing technique? did you use a tripod and timer/cable release to take the focus test chart?

anyway if it still does not focus properly (i.e., front or back focus) then paying $1500 for the 1.5 yr old used lens is really sad indeed... hope your bro's friend has promised you some personal warranty/guarantee?

if it was $1350-1400 would be a better price to buy the 1.5yr old 17-55mm as i think i've seen some people offering that price in the resale forum in CS... provided the lens is not a lemon... but generally Nikon lenses should not be such but then again you really do not know for sure if the used 17-55mm may have had some hard knocks or dropped during the 1.5 year history?

actually I tend to agree with doom102938 that it may be a better deal to get a brand new 17-55mm for just another $450-500h which comes with warranty... so any focus issue you can get it recalibrated with little or no costs involved...

btw, maybe next time you may want to bring along the focus test chart with you when you are buying any lens whether new or used... that way you won't have to face the hassle of having to deal with a lemon

one more thing... since you are using the D300... do take note that it has the function to allow you to calibrate your focus till the lens gives you sharp images which you can then save the calibraiton setting in the D300 so that everytime you use that 17-55mm it will switch over to the calibrated focus setting

welcome to the world of photography...

Nice!! On behalf of the economy, I thank you for contributing significantly to the growth and rebuilding of the recession :) Have fun

If you leave the D300 in playback mode without pressing any buttons for around 10 or so seconds, it goes into standby mode. If it just totally blank out then you might have gotten a lemon.

Ya your D300 has auto focus fine tune. If the lens is new, send it in for calibration. But if its the 1.5 years old, spend around 15 min to fine tune the lens and it would be tack sharp(if tuned correctly). I havent used this feature but I hope I dont have to use it anyway:)

Next thing is to practice and practice:D enjoy!

I just got my D300 too! after buying 50D in Sept, selling it in oct, and finally got my favourite nikon D300. Of course not going to jump ship this time, why i changed camp is because 1. I grow up a Nikon fan, 2. canon image quality sucks.

But after testing the 51 point AF i was slightly disappointed. After test many times, i realised that the 51 point autofocus speed is slower than using single point, am i wrong? Cos when I used my canon 50D with 17-85 IS USM lens, the focus speed is the same whether I used the a single point or the 9 point autofocus. And the focus will be locked almost immediately under normal indoor florocent light. I tested using the D90 18-105mm AF-S ED VR DX lens.

So, am i facing this alone? or am i expecting too much? ;p Or i thought i should be, since it by right should be better than Canon. Afterall, D300 scored 9.5 for performance in DPreview while 50D only scored 9.0. Or is it the lens that is the limiting factor? But if that is the case, still there shouldn't be any difference between single point and 51/21/9 point.

But generally still love my new toy. just that maybe next time I will need to use single point focus more often.

many thanks forthe kind comments....
As I travel frequently I am considering an allrounder 18-105mm or 18-200mm lens.
Yes, I am also considering a SB900 flash and a Gitzo CF tripod with a Kang-something ballhead.
The tripod and the ballhead is used and buying from a friend.

As for a good mid-zoom lens, I'm looking at a 17-55mm or a 24-70mm f2.8.
else I may even settle for a 24-85mm f2.8-4.0 lens. Any comments for this lens?

it seems you have a very comfortable budget from the items you have listed. if that is the case, get markins ballhead instead. for fast lens, unless you are very sure you dun go wide, 17-55mm would be better for DX format (D300). you still can use the 55mm for portraits, or get another dedicated prime portraits lens should you see the need later.

on the other hand, if you are really very well off, you can decide on D700 now instead of getting D300 first, as you may need to change lens next time you upgrade (due to focal length used, and for lens that can only fit the DX formats)

edit: just noted you already bought D300 and 17-55mm. noted also you wanted to do streets and travel, 12-24mm is not really a luxury lens though, i think it can be very useful much more than the tele. you can buy sigma 10-20 or tokina 11-16mm if you want something cheaper.

With almost 500 more, you get a brand new 17-55mm f/2.8 and 1 year warranty.

You decide whether its worth it. But personally i'll get the new lens.

you usually can't expect lens price to drop a lot like the body, esp the higher ends.

yah lor.. must consider.. our strength capacity.. having very good equip but only tahan 1 hour.... u will take lesser photos compared to some 1 travel light .. get the kit lens and you are good to go for the travels.. if not u will machiam living back your army days.. carring all kind of weopen.. den when target come.. super shag to take out and shoot.. :) yah d300 is a good cam.. master it well no regrets.. want cheap and good quality optics get a prime wide angle lense like 24mm.. you are good to go..
