agreed. i've already more or less decided on a nikon.
and i've more or less decided on a d90 with the kit lens.
more megapixels ≠ better. seriously.

thanks a lot for all the discussion!!

are b+w filters really better than hoya?
i mean. there's quite a price difference for some.
anyway. the crumpler bags look great. i've always wanted a crumpler since 5 years ago.
but are they specialized enough for cameras? like a 5,6,7 million dollar home?

Congrats on your decision ;) I'm sure you will love the d90.

For the filters, you can read reviews and comparisons all over the net.

As for the bags, i have a 7million dollar home (too big for my equip alone) and i use it as a multipurpose bag. For almost everything, you can read reviews on the net, but from my personal POV, million dollar homes are good camera bags.

More expensive does not necessarily mean better. See the following article and be surprised!!

http://www.lenstip.com/113.1-article-UV_filters_test.html

By the way, Heliopan makes Rodenstock. And Nikon clear filters are not in this test. Nikon clear filters did exceptionally well in another test I read a while back. I forgot the URL though. Google it.

Enjoy.

hey thanks!! i've seen that page lots of times. haha. that's why i don't see the better thing about b+w? i plan to get the hoya hmc uv if it doesn't come with the kit.

i'm a happy user of a 7 million dollar home. :D

for filters, it depends a lot on your priorities. I use a Hoya HMC. Happy with it too. :) I think the money can be better spent elsewhere, such as a reflector, light modifications, etc. That's for me at least.

If you get to John 3:16, do update us here what they said about the 18-55 kit...last time i talked to them , :-( they curtly replied nikon does not make D90 with 18-55 kit.. hmm what a way to reply to a customer...

j3:16 usually out of stock for d90, but you can pre-order with them, they will reserve a set for you. Just give them your number and tell them you are looking for kit or body.

Because too many people are still into the idea of German = better despite the Japanese having overtaken them years ago.

Well, to add, all you really need is the camera, the kit lens, a memory card, a card reader, and a bag. The rest you can take your time to buy. Especially additional lenses; don't buy them unless you know what you can and cannot do with them!

That's right! It is about using, not owning. If you want to buy also can, make sure to offer it to me first when you want to sell it because it is "underutilized and in the drycab all the time"!

Seems extremely unlikely that they would reply like that when they know full well that the d90 does come in that kit. Unless they aren't revenue or profit oriented, and just want to piss customers off, of course.

18 - 105 basically covers a decent range (close to mod range zoom)

18 - 55 (usually for portraits)
55 - 200 (mid range telephoto with the extra zoom)

Well, depends on your budget too.

The time when I bought mine, I had a budget constraint, thus i felt that a 18 -105 would suit me better (with decent coverage)

Of course, having 2 lenses adds in the fun... but personally I feel that it would 'hinder' the learning process as you would always be presented the 'crossroads' situation (which lens to use ar?) So i stuck with getting the single kit lens.

thanks! I've been watching and checking out a lot in the marketplace for all the nikon stuff
(I've always been so crazy about cameras that I recently neglected my studies a little. :()

cathay photo has good service and prices? what about ms colour? i know i'm a real newbie about all this. i guess i'm more package-sensitive than price sensitive too. HAHA.

I would like to suggest TK foto , really friendly place. Not crowded most of the time. The service?? and I believe the price is as good as MS Color, and defintely cheaper then Cathay, which is a 15 mins walk away

I think you'll be very happy with the D90. I know I was :) Good Luck!

If you can get it.. then you won't regret it. I'm stuck with my newbie 1000D because I didn't know better. lol

Out of curiosity, is there any you could possibly need that the 1000D does not do ? The only significant thing I know of is the spot meter, but 1000D does have a partial meter, which is probably pretty good.

It's funny coz just a few years ago, even professionals use equipment with even less features than the entry level DSLRs of today.

i'm quite firm on getting a nikon. personally i think i would prefer the layout of the buttons that way.
plus, i'm the kind once i've decided on a brand, if i were to be persuaded to get other brands, i might end up being unhappy because it wasn't my original choice to start with.
you may say i'm being a brand-conscious freak but i think the brand boils down to comfort of using the camera for me. HAHA. ;)
