you can find out the filter diameter for your lens, then head to your brick and mortar shop or order online or ebay if you can find something you like. mostly aftermarket hood no need so stringent selection lah :)

does the lens have bayonet slot? if not you'll need screw-in hoods, and be sure to check if the lens front element rotates before buying a screw-in..alternatively you can use a cylindrical hood in stead of petal for rotating front element

hope it helps :)

Wow thanks for your detailed explanation that got me totally blur... noobie here no doubt...

Think i need to read the kit len manual to chk if it is bayonet or screw-in one... but mine is kit lens leh... alot of ppl shld hv so mayb someone expert can explain?

well i tink petal hood looks nicer... haha noobish comment... dun flame hor...

Sorry noob here... i've finally upgraded my S200EXR to white K-X... i'm interested in getting a petal hood for my kit lens for the time being...

any recommendations?? with price so i know how much i need...

;)

You can buy the original hood for the DA1855 or DA1855 II to match w/ your DAL 18-55. They share the same hood.

Thanks for the heads up... searched the price guides but dun have price for hoods leh...

Dont think it's available in shop. You have to either buy it from elsewhere or order from Emjay :)

i just saw, your 18-55 is a bayonet mounting thread for lens hood, meaning you just need to snap the hood on, vs screw-in type that mounts just like a filter..

anyway, pentax-labeled lens hood will probably be more expensive than after-market types

It is not available in shops here. I ordered from the previous agent before. They ordered for me and cost about $48/pc.

Wow you guys been great!

Just wondering that some of you mentioned after-market types... where can i find such equipment... sounds quite interesting...

$48 for a kit lens hood? Might as well get another kit lens?

hi guys, i did manage to get a lens hood for my k-x. However its a cheap 3rd party lens hood for about $15.

Just one question, when I take a picture with flash, there is a shadow at the top of my picture. When I remove the hood, the shadow does not appear. So i would assume the shadow was caused by the hood. Is this normal ??

U'll need an external flash to prevent vignetting when using a hood.

Do you mean "shadow at the bottom of my picture"?
If you use the camera's built-in pop-up flash, it may not extend high enough for the light from the flash to extend clear beyond the lens and hood, in which case you will get a clear shadow at the bottom edge like this. With some lenses (eg. DA 16-45mm), it is not possible to use the built-in flash at the wider focal length of the lens for this reason.

Either use an external flash so that the additional height from the flash unit will allow the light from the flash not to be blocked, or remove the lens hood completely. Best to do trial and error.

Now if you have visible dark edges at the corners or edges of the photograph with the lens hood on, it means you have mechanical vignetting. It will most likely show up at the wider focal lengths. You may need to change the lens hood with another that is not too deep or has a different shape so that it doesn't block the light entering the lens. Stacking too many filters in front of the lens could be another reason.

i got the original Pentax hood PH-RBA 52mm FOR THE 18-55MM kit lens from funan....a bit expensive s$45

Are your china make hoods screw on to the filter threads? They look great, i may want to get some for my lenses too :D

haiz, if it were me, since it's already Pentax, people will see me no-up, it doesn't matter if i get a branded matching hood or not, china hood also good  ;p

not worth getting another kit lens back then... most people don't sell their kit lens and at the price you see in B&S now, most will keep the kit lens to sell with their camera as there are not many DA lenses available.

Yeah, today's pentax lenses are very expensive...

yeap i guess so... it should be the built in flash... a friend of mine also suggested using external flash... when i remove the hood, the shadow is gone... probably i'll use it only when it brought daylight when there isn't much need for a flash...

But Elavan, I see you very up because you got k-7. Magnesium Alloy body.... mine's only stainless steel and the model is like "top-of-the-line" 3 years ago. :bsmilie:

After a while, I don't think camera brands matter because how you take photos is what differentiates a great photographer vs a wannabe-photog. Hor?

This also happens if you use extension tubes, huge macro lenses, or wide-angle attachments. Ultra-zoom too but since nobody in their right mind will use flash when they are taking subjects a few hundred meters away... that's no problem for ultra zooms.

If you really need to use flash - an external flash is probably the only solution. :)
