I really like this series and how the images are resolved. One question - what lens - and settings - did you use for this shot?

This is a follow on question to my earlier post - would the bokeh, if a 50mm or 85mm f1.4 was used - be better and smoother?

Camera : E-P1
Lens : 17mm f2.8 (pancake, native m43 lens)
ISO : 800

Bokeh is nothing about the camera but the lens. The 17mm pancake is not a perfect circular bladed lens. If you have a 14-54MkII, or better still, one of those Leica lenses, then the bokeh gets even nicer.

frankly speaking if u are buying into 4/3 system it abt colour and sharpness..as for bokeh dun even bother with it...they are unable to achieve it as good as the apsc and ever more so for the ff sensor....
speaking from experience a 50-200 f2.8-3.5 swd on taking a subject at 5 metre away for a headshot at 200mm focal length at f3.5(400mm equivalent on 35mm) still lose out to a sony/minolta 500mm f8 reflex lens on a full body shot at more than 50 metres away.

for yr info..the oly system is the only one i knw of can take a big wedding group photo shot at wide open at f2.8

Thanks for the information! Appears clean even at ISO800 (already a P&S beater).

DOF on the E-P1 will be the same as the regular Four Thirds camera. If someone has a 30mm f1.4 and can bring it down this weekend at the ClubSNAP exhibition and workshops at Singapore Arts Museum, we can do a test.

If you have other lenses, we can do a test.

If the Oly's strength is colour and sharpness - then there will be inevitable comparisons with the top P&S cameras. But in its favour, the Oly seems to have nice shallow DOF than the top P&S - albeit as you say - not comparable to larger sensors.

So far, it seems also that the high ISO advantage capability is clear.

E-P1 samples in crappy lighting situation :
Place : Wet Market at midnight
Lighting : Overhead industrial lights (mercury lamps)
Generally a greenish cast on all jpgs
Camera : E-P1 with 17mm pancake f2.8 lens

We have seen in the last photowalk that the E-P1 is a good performer in good daylight.
I decided to go a nightshoot (without flash of course) at a local wet market.
Lighting in those places are generally horrible with a greenish cast. Did not shoot in RAW this
time, so that I can see how the jpgs can corrected and how usable are they even when shot
under this less-than-ideal lighting situation.
Here are my findings/images :

The E-P1 looks really competent despite the poorer lighting conditions.
Are you pleased with it?

Hi weekh,

I'm amazed by the IQ of your pics and am seriously swayed to give up on my Sony A350 altogether.

But before I jump into the bandwagon, I hope its not too much to ask, but it would be great if you can share a few photos with fast moving subjects.

I'm bought my one and only DSLR, primarily to take photos of my kid who keeps running about.

Cheers!

The LCD screen has a tendency to be jerky and freeze up at times, especially when the action gets hot.
I wouldn't use it for fast action. That said, many entry level DSLR also cannot live up to the job.

Agreed , but think TS has excellent eye for composition and a keen sense of the right lighting at the right time. Which I would say , most of the shots are mainly accredited to TS himself

But I wont go as far to say go ditch your Alpha or other DSLR , as I m sure TS can replicate all these shots with any decent systems available in the market. Buy the Pen but keep your DSLR too ;)

Definitely. I like noise. So I shoot with noise filter off almost all the time. On Olympus, you can turn on various stages of noise filter, which then controls the amount of detail and noise suppression. On the other hand you can shoot with noise filter off, and then remove the noise with software which gives you a far more superior control on the post processing stage, but time consuming. Everyone have their own different workflow. Personally I come from film so I like noise.

Here are some images from some night street shooting with the E-P1 with 17mm pancake lens. ISO 400 setting was used throughout the shoot, handheld shots. No tripod. Aperture Priority Mode, aperture setting was mainly f2.8 wide open throughout.

More nightshot images.

Remember on 11th July at 6:00pm, there will be a nightshoot event with the E-P1 where I will be sharing some tips and tricks that can help you enjoy your E-P1 more especially during holidays when you don't want to bring a tripod.
