G9

Dude, for the first pic, I find it totally acceptable and the noise actually adds some character to it. For the second picture, I am assuming you are zooming in, in other words, the ISO levels will be shifted pretty high to compensate already. I think the noise level is very acceptable in such concert lighting wor...

But there is i using Auto mode to capture.

Those really bad photos i already deleted. I mean those with my own setting because the noise level too high so i deleted away.

Can help for night shooting with nice setting.

I really new to canon G9, and still trying to explore it.

At such night concert view, there is only 2 ways around this, one is large apperture and second is high ISO (Flash is not a solution either prohibited or even if permit will have miserable effect unless you have a good flash & skill to balance the exposure and background). Unfortunately G9 apperture drop to 4.8 at the long zoom end, so in order to have sufficient fast shutter speed to prevent motion blur, ISO have to be high, which should be minimally 800, and hopefully at 1600. At this high ISO, not many compact can fare well at current technology, unfortunately.

If you're to capture the mode and want a 'cleaner image', switch to Custom or AV mode, force the ISO to 400 or lower preferably, and use your view-finder to follow the subject (that will force your camera to move together, which may increase of chances of eliminating the motion blur impact on your subject), and don't zoom in all the way, and force the apperture to be as low as possible, and snap continuously.... You may find a few interesting and sharp pict (on your subject) out of it.

Thanks for you advise, i will try it out.

but i realise that if i set it high ISO example ISO 800 and above the photo will have high level of noise. why will have more noise.

plus, if i want to capture fireworks, how can i set my G9?

and if i want the background image to be blur and the item i wanted to capture to be clear.

and if i want to capture the item to be blur and my background to be clear.

how to make all this effect?

Base on my limited understanding, sensor has certain threshold limitation (sensitivity), to detect how much light fall onto each of the photosites (pixel). And when light is low, each of the pixel will not capture the exact light intensity and color, so the sensor will start to do 'guess' what the light intensity/color it should be. As a result, either details that suppose to be there were lost, or wrong color is interpreted, and the end result is the 'noise'.

On your second question, G9 has a 'firework' mode (go to scene mode), which you can choose and it should help you with the auto setting, but make sure you have a tripod or good camera support.

Background image to be blur... Are you refering to motion blur or 'bokeh' ? Motion blur happens when there is relative motion between your subject and background. It's easy if your subject is stationary, just ensure it's long exposure (0.5 second or longer, depending on the effect you want), and your camera is stationary (on tripod). If your subject is moving, that will require 'panning' skill for you to trace the subject with your camera while keeping the shutter speed low (0.5 sec or longer).

If you're asking about 'background blur', like those effect you see on portrait shoots where background is blur-off and the subject is sharp, the blur effect is normally call 'bokeh', and it's a very big subject in the serious photographer field. Unfortunately, G9 won't be able to produce a very good 'blur' effect, due to the small sensor size and the small max apperture (the reason why will be a long long discussion). In order to achieve the maximum blur background effect, you should zoom all the way in (optical zoom only please), and keep the max apperture f4.8 at longest zoom end, that should give you some blur effect on your background. If you want anything more, DLSR and a 'fast lens' is what you need.

Not sure why you want the item to be blur and background to be clear, but you just simply reverse the rule in the previous case, your background become your subject now... :)

Just experiment and have fun !

I will try it out.

for the fireworks mood setting, i used it before but the speed is super slow. so i thinking how to mke it nice and speed faster.

so if i want the background to be sharp and my object to be blur? how to set it?

Can intro any books for how to shoot a photos with effects like bokeh and etc de?

Fireworks need slow shutter speed to capture the trails. More interesting than a snap shot with fast shutter speeds, assuming you can even let in enough light.

Okay, really thanks a lot.

Are you a G9 user too?

How you think of G9 personally?

I interested to buy books that can help me know more and learn about effect setting, any good books that can intro me?

Wikipedia is a good place to start. Here is what I pulled from Wikipedia search:

Topic about apperture (f-stop),
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-number
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture

Topic about shutter-speed,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_%28photography%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_speed

Topic about bokeh/depth of field,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field

Topic about motion blur,

There are some 'basic photopgraphic' books around, just go to Borders/Times, or borrow from Library. It's better to learn general photographic skill, and you can couple that with the G9 user manual to find how to change the setting to achieve the effects.

wow...

thanks a lot for your help.

i still have a lot more to learn...

No G10 ah? Wonder when it'd be out.

i hope not so soon, i'm still enjoying playing with my beloved G9
it took 2 years for canon to leap from G6 to G7 and 1 year from G7 to G9

so i think there should be an update later this year.. :dunno: well, i hope not

anyone got problem w/ G9 battery? it run out so fast...just only can an evening shots w/o flash, my battery flat!!

seems a bit boring... compare photo taken few years ago.. by my G5

any ideas whats the latest prices for G9?

I m thinking of getting a Samsung NV series like the 24........

Need some help here...not sure if this been asked before..

Is there anywhere in SG that I could get the FULL screen screen protector for this camera? I had gotten a 3" SP becos I simply cant find it selling in SG. Looks like a joke really..
Also, anyone using compatible batt for this? The original batt is really ex...I saw compatible batt selling at Eastgear at $29.90...any comments?
