Hi to All G9 users,

I'm a newbie camera user. My previous Pentax Optio died after the LCD screen cracked =(.. I used it mainly for leisure, taking photos with friends and family, nothing fanciful or complicated. Since now I have the chance to get a new camera. I wanted one that will 1) Be pocketable, portable and easy to carry 2) Have slightly better quality than normal P&S camera and allow me to explore some manual settings on my own.
Through my research and reading of countless reviews, I think Canon G9 is the only 1 that suits the above criteria. The rest are either too big and bulky or offers no manual controls for me to explore. Did I do my research correctly or did I miss out on some other models that suits the bill? Please also kindly advise where are the places I shld scout for one? Thank god for this great forum and thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Cantona87,

For your criteria of better than norm P&S and yet still quite pocketable, I'll say G9 fits the bill. That said, you can't finish catch up with the new models that keep churning out that's better and smaller all the time... So G9 is good enough (for me at least).

Places to buy? Urm... You can try Cathay or my fav would be John 3:16 at Funan. No guarantee but would you rather wait for the IT show to see if they might have it cheaper there then?

Cheers!

Hi Axela and Gaofar,

Thanks for the replies. I known cameras will just keep getting smaller and better. But those ultra compact models does not really offer any manual phototaking right? I wanna wait for the PC show too. But I'll be going overseas in May!!! Argh!!! Will the price difference be very great? By the way, thanks for providing me with the prices. What do they include?

Hi, I have just joined the G9 user fraternity. I have been going through the user manual, studying and exploring its many features. Quite a versatile camera. Hope to learn more about the G9 from the experienced users.

Hello,
I just found this forum.. well, didn't know there's such a forum in Singapore! I am quite convinced of G9 and am looking to buy one. Anyone tried ebay? Maybe can share some experience? Thanks.

Just got my G9 and I must say it was love at first sight.I got my set in Japan so where can I get the accessories locally at a good price? Thanks.

what are the accessories you're looking for specifically?

Hi Jetstream, how much was it in Japan? May I know where did you buy it from, i.e. which city, company name? Thanks.

Edit: I am also looking for accessories such as the Richard Franiec's accessories (grip, thumb rest, hotshoe cover, etc.) and some adapters and filters. From my research, seems a good place to buy is online from Lensmateonline.com. I don't know of any local stores selling these items. If you are interested, we can bulk purchase to save on the shipping cost.

Btw, is there a discount price for ClubSnap members for bulk purchase? I think Richard himself posted in this forum in an earlier thread?

Got it at around 25% cheaper than here.Generally prices there are cheaper compared locally. The downside is that there's no international warranty.I can either pay for repairs locally or send it back to Japan the next time I go there.I got it in Tokyo. But I have confidence this set will last me many years without any problems.:)

Which major seller carries the most optional stuff for G9 here?

You can actually get an extended warranty from Mack (http://www.mackcam.com/) which covers internationally. They have local dealers in Singapore but they only sell extended warranty for items above US$3000. For items less than US$500, you can buy the 5 yrs extended warranty from ebay for less than S$60 inclusive of shipping.

I think your homework is not complete. There's the Fuji FD31 if you still can find one, or second hand, or ebay. There's the Nikon P5100. But then again, this is the Canon G9 thread. You should get it, though I can't say it's very pocketable if you are wearing tight pants.

In terms of manual controls and flexibility with getting a flash to play with, it's mostly down to these two contenders, the G9 and the P5100. Price is vastly different so depends on your budget too. The G9 is also bigger, heftier, heavier, beefier, whichever way you wanna look at it. But if you get it, won't regret also. It will serve you well for a while.

Before you commit, also think about the possibility of you moving into the DSLR realm. Cos some of the equipment you buy for the PNS now, can recycle and use next time when you buy a DSLR, as long as it's same brand. Actually, it's mostly just the flash.

Hi Peek,

thanks for the reply. Did a quick research on Nikon P5100 and I must say it looks pretty impressive though I've yet to try it. Actually, I just want a mobile camera with good pics and manual functions. I can do without the external flash. The G9 is really tempting even though it is slightly thicker than my liking. Furthermore, it is stretching my budget. Maybe some owners here can convince me? =))

would you ever want a DSLR? Or you have one? Like I said, if you want to get a Canon DSLR in the future, the G9 will go well in line with that move. Even the RAW processing can be unified. If you just really want a small portable one, seriously, G9 not for you. If you want SERIOUS quality from a PNS, you will NOT go wrong with G9

Hi Peek,

thanks for your quick reply. I will not be moving into DSLR anywhere in the foreseeable future. Just need a camera that is mobile and convenient and takes higher quality photos with manual functions. I'll drop by 3:16 soon to compare these 2 cameras. But the G9 is more expensive by a long mile!!
