Just came back from Osaka went walk walk at Big Camera Store and saw the G9 there at 47200 Yen (S$602):bigeyes: No free gift, just a 32Mb card with the camera, cannot tahan so bought it ;p Got a 8% rebate so final price is $554 !!!! I paid by credit card so its 8% rebate, pay by cash is 10% rebate. You can only choose either the 5% tax free cash rebate or the 8-10% points rebate for the next purchase.:lovegrin:

I Use the points to buy the UW casing WPDC21 original price at 18700 Yen (S$238) after using the poiints it become S$186.6 :bigeyes: Cannot believe it....so dirt cheap :lovegrin: G9 screen protective flim is S$8.80. Canon Original 0.75 Wide angle converter lens is 17800 Yen (S$227) before rebate. Enough damage done so didn't buy that on this trip :sweat:

I am deciding to buy a G9 or cheap DSLR? Care to share any problems encountered for G9? Hoping to get a durable camera, my current R4 Ricoh lens cannot retract back after 1 yr+ of 12000 photos taken only..

Saw some samples of G9 http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/canong9_samples2/ , was really good leh. Saw the specs of G9, quite impressive compared to other high end compact camera as their zoom is relatively weaker F50fd with 3xoptical & nikon P5100 with 3.5optical.

I am contemplating between 400D, D40X & a G9 now.. :dunno:

I faced the same situation as you are currently in when I was getting a camera, upgrading from a compact camera Panasonic FX10.

Initially I had wanted a DSLR and was thinking of Canon 350D & 400D, Sony's A100, Nikon's D40X and Panasonic DMC-L10. While I was fiddling with the ranges of the a/m models, comparing specs and prices, I start to think more of how this camera would fit in my picture of usage.

You see, I had this FX10 which serves it's purpose of taking shots of my family whenever we are on outing. But I also use it to take video shots which is rather important to me. So I was thinking that though I might want to have a DSLR to do some great shots that my FX10 is not capable of, that will means that I'll have to bring both cameras out whenever I go out, one for photo and one for video?... That sounds rather silly to me. So in the end I shift my target on to prosumer camera which takes great shots like a DSLR yet still able to take video-shots.

With that I researched further and came to Nikon's P5100 and Canon G9, both having great design and features but it's ultimately the DPReview's of the comparison of photo-quality of the 2 cameras that makes me chose the Canon G9.

Hope that helps you in streamlining your requirement needs issue.

Wow, Thanks! that is very helpful & what i am thinking now too.. Video & photography, can't have the best of both world without compromise.

So far how is the G9? Good. I think it has one of the best specs around for its range with accessories enable.. With external flash & lens. Are they expensive? Would like a 10x zooms cabaility with macro close up occassionally.. Only the G9 is able to do that compare to the other like F50fd, P5100..

Any problems u met while using the G9?? The battery spec is a little with only 240shots, is it true??

I be using camera once a blue moon when there is family activity/tour/exhibitions.. Thats also hesitate me buying a DSLR.

any problem with the power adaptor? is there using samepower voltage? how abt the warranty? is the warranty international? i saw few shop from tokyo offering 3 years warranty. any problem bring back 1 unit back from japan?
