I would say its a little underexposed with slight warmer WB. I like how the dog is looking adoringly at the girl but the b/g is a little distracting. A closer crop to bring mroe attention to the dogs face and expression might work...

Did some quick shots with a 85/1.2 and I can safely say that I am so not ready for it... here are some quick portraits taken of a recently re-homed kitten called Polo

Trying for the whole innocent look.. and yes she is a little cross eyed..

The focus tracking on the 350D was less than ideal but I like this image as it kinda reminds me of those lions you find on emblems and shields..

Any tips on how to shoot black dogs? going to try again at SPCA this fri.. I cant seem to capture the black dogs.. unable to bring out their expressions..

using kit lens and bounced flash with D40, any tips on how I could use my stuff to shoot?

Hmm try to use the shinyness of the coats to help define the face shape by bouncing off celings or walls. Also set your flash to compensate down by about 1/2 a stop as it may overexpose a little if the dog is all black.

Unfortunately it takes time and expereince to read a dogs body language and you will just have to practice and observe to learn how and when to take the shot. It can be very tiring but if you can take a shot that can help then get adopted then its all worth it

Went to www.muttsnmittens.com again today and had to take these cats.

Julie is the mom's name but the kittens don't have names yet.. Mom is in the center. Left 2 are males right 2 are females

Didn't want to wake 2 of them up at first but in the end they woke up cause we disturbed them a little too much..

Here we have 2 rottweilers .. both very friendly and very unlike the 'stereotypical' breed image. Both taken at www.muttsnmittens.com

Goldie , a little on the hyper and stubborn side but stil very adorable..

Hannibal - His temperament doesn't suit his name's reputation.. very good with humans though not that firendly with other dogs. Very eager to get his head rubbed though..

juz a quick question, how to determine if the picture is correctly exposed? I always seem to be underexposing the pictures without realising it...

Take a look at your luminace histogram of the picture. If the majoriity of the bards are clustered to the left then its usualy underexposed(or you have alot of dark areas in your exposure) You can read more here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/understanding-histograms.shtml

Also it will help if your LCD is calibrated
