Hi,

Quick background, looking for a simple, low cost camera with high zoom function & image stabilization to replace my Sony W1. Honestly, have little idea of purple fringing, noise, ISO, etc and I'm pretty happy with the pictures I take with the old W1, just hand itchy, want something with higher zoom and also don't want to snap 3 photos before getting one that's not so blur due to lack of IS

Was looking for a Canon s3 (Canon's marketing works on me...) but stumbled upon the s5700 yesterday when going through the Buy/Sell section and in your opinion, is the s5700 for me?

Key concern is the image stabilization. Hand shakes like I have parkinson's sometimes.... Went through this thread last night and it seems good enough, just like more suggestions/comments.

Any advice or other recommendations is appreciated. Thanks.

my experience told me that S5700 not really good in stabilization. Sometime i still need to use tripod capture a nice photo but using normal mode. But if concern about the price for this categories then this camera is the better choice:) As i know Sony camera got double stabilization, i think it's more better than Fujifilm camera in stabilization.

My complied list of S5700 pros & cons :

Pros:

1) For outdoor or day shots, its picture quality is very good.
2) Its macro shots are very good and can get as close to 1cm.
3) It allows optical zoom in video mode.
4) Due to its unprotuding lens, it is less prone to dust.
5) Side handle is big and comfortable to hold.
6) 10x zoom at a low price.
7) Accepts xd/sd cards.
8) Noise control is relatively good despite lack of SuperCCD.

Cons:

1) Purple fringing appears at high contrast areas.
2) Lack of SuperCCD => nite shots not as good as F31fd.
3) No image stabilization.
4) Usable ISO is no more than 400 => noisy pics after ISO400.
5) Shot to shot is abit lag.
6) Shutter speed range abit short => 4 sec - 1/100 sec
7) Its wide end is abit tight => 38mm - 380mm.
8) No battery indicator on lcd screen.

I must say that this camera is quite value for money considering its low price while having most of the controls like a DSLR. if image stabilization is ur main concern, then perhaps u have to look elsewhere unless u willing to bring a big tripod to wherever u go.

PS: sorry for so long-winded.

Thanks for the replies. Hlw8888, I did saw your list earlier, very helpful.

Tried out the S5800 at the IT show today, the stabilization isn't as bad as I thought, even at maximum zoom, the picture I took looked much better than those I had on my old W1...

If I can get one S5700 at the low $200s, may try it out and slowly learn more about using manual controls then. Starting slow.
