MY OWN X100

" The X100 delivers all of the goods and more in terms of its overall handling and image quality. Fujifilm have married the best of the past, in the multitude of external controls, leaf-shutter, optical viewfinder and stunning appearance, with some cutting-edge features, most notably the hybrid optical / electronic viewfinder, which really is a revelation to use. The ability to frame your subject in not one, not two, but three different ways, each of which offers certain benefits and all housed within a compact body, makes the X100 incredibly versatile, although we suspect that most owners will exclusively enjoy using the bright optical viewfinder and its unique information overlay.

All of the nice handling touches and cutting-edge technologies in the world wouldn't matter if the X100 didn't deliver the goods in terms of image quality, but thankfully the X100 scores a bullseye in terms of the photos that it produces. Noise is noticeable only by its almost complete absence throughout the ISO range of 100-12,800, while the Dynamic Range function helps to boost contrast and detail. The 23mm lens is sharp from the center to the edges, while the F/2 maximum aperture makes it easy to creatively throw the background out of focus. The X100 is right up there with the best APS-C sensor cameras on the market.

The only major fly in the ointment is the sky-high price-tag. £999 / $1299 is straying well into prosumer DSLR territory, so you really need to ask yourself if the X100 suits your particular needs, or if a DSLR or compact system camera with their interchangeable lenses would be a safer bet. On the other hand, for those of you who have been wishing that one of the camera manufacturers would deliver a compact, quiet and intuitive camera that takes great pictures, that price tag probably looks like something of a snip (or at least just about bearable). So despite the high cost of admission, the Fujifilm Finepix X100 joins the handful of cameras that have won our coveted Essential! award. "

According to my dealer, the Fuji rep who delivered his quota of X100 to him said that there is not enough units in this shipment to cover all the pre-orders taken by HN during the IT Show. Aside from those allocated to HN, every other dealer was allocated only 2 sets each. I myself got one of the 2 sets from my dealer at the special discounted price which is way, way below the official retail price of $1,699 as I had expected.

Those who have pre-ordered from HN had better rush down to claim their sets if they don't want to wait for the next shipment to collect their sets. ;)

the shop that i paid deposit and preordered from told me his shop only given 5 sets only. the rest end of the mth.

Yup overheard the South Asia Computer lady begging the fuji sales rep to give her more sets this afternoon. But all is well as there should be more arriving by end of the month. :-) Just wait lah. Anyways slow to pull the trigger means miss the target so need to wait for next target. This was the case for every hot camera - Panasonic LX-3, GF-1, even the mighty Leica M9....the good news is they should have worked out the bugs like the slightly tilted OVF in the first batch (pre earthquake). Also firmware updates would probably benefit the autofocus when there's a lack of contrast (remember the autofocus on the Olympus EP-1 and first batch of EP-2). So patience has its rewards.

I'M LOVIN IT !!!!

Just get the X100 people :)

Also sharing a snapshot I took randomly yesterday evening. Low light shot.

100% crop to show the noise performance

Just got mine - 70 units arrived in Dubai. SGD1.8k per set, 8GB+4GB card, no case, no discount either. Selling like hotcakes around here.

IQ is pretty good, and the controls don't take long to get used to. Firmware is definitely on the slow side, and the fact that LR3/ACR/AP3 does not support the RAF files is somewhat annoying. The macro mode takes some getting used to, and I'm trying to figure the MFD for the macro mode. AF is reasonably fast, though it seems that my NEX5 is AFing faster and more accurately in low-light situations. The NEX5 also has the advantage of the handheld twilight mode and HDR, which I've found to be pretty useful.

Still, the X100 is an interesting breed - forces me to take the time to compose the shot, and the shutter makes practically no sound at all, compared to the shutter on the NEX5 which sounds like a machine gun next to the X100. Not big on the film simulations, and I can't wait for LR3 to support the RAF files so I can do more with this.

Friend of mine did a test against the Leica X1 and swears that the X100 images came out better in a blind test.

Just some ramblings: Picked this up yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately had to charge the battery and it stared rain in the evening so no pictures as yet. Handling wise it has a certain je nai sais quoi about it. Some cameras just have this others don't. IMO the Olympus EPL-2 with EVF has this, so does the Rollei 35s (another viewfinder camera), the olympus XA series, Panasonic LX-3 and the older Leica LTM models t0 name a few . The shutter release on these older leica is a thing to die for. BTW I have sold my Rollei, Olympus so please don't email me about it ya? Thanks. These cameras make photography fun you feel it's an extension of you. You start to treat the camera like a precision instrument, an art tool and not a toy or computer. Some cameras that I have owned in the past that didn't have the je nai sais quoi include the Olympus EPL-1 (strange that the EP-2 has it but the EPL-1 doesn't), The Panasonic GF-1 and an Old Yashica (similar to the Electro 35)..
The autofocus is about as fast as the Olympus EP-2 but this has a focus assist light. But in situations that lack contrast and then light levels are low (but not low enough for the focus assist light to switch on) it has difficulty locking on. The shutter sound - what shutter sound LOL. Right now I find that unnerving - so I'll leave the default shutter volume on and set it to low.

I know! Damn heart pain, but what to do. Win some, lose some :(

And you guy got the hood some more :( :(

@magicdragon - yes, this camera has a certain something about it - got to take time to take the shot, and it couldn't care less if I'm in a hurry. What really annoys me about the camera is that while sitting in my bag, the power switch is somehow loose enough to get turned on and I find myself with half a battery at times. Picked up a spare NP-95 battery last night, and now I have a backup.

ghoonk,

At 1,699 I don't think many people got the hood lah. Dfive got his I don't know how. Don't worry about the price. Already paid no point being sad. As for you battery issue (or rather on/off switch issue) set the power save mode to minimum time (1 think it's 2 mins).

Dfive,

are you able to use the original cap with the filter adapter ring? Or do you need to remove the ring as well before you can cap it?

Hope there is more coming in soon! I need one during the month of June.

I've read rave reviews on the X100 but have some questions to those who have had the camera and gone shooting with it:

1) Does the focusing system annoy you? I've been reading reviews and basically the conclusion is that slow manual focusing is hopeless hence should just stick to autofocus.
2) Does the optical viewfinder show what is and what is not in focus or is it just a clear image?
3) Average battery life is 100 shots when using the optical viewfinder??
4) How fast is the image processing from one shot to the next?

The original len cap can still be used over the adapter ring even with a filter mounted on it. Luckily, a black rimmed filter does not look out of place on the X100 as a metallic coloured rimmed filter with a 49mm thread is next to impossible to find.

Thanks tomcat. The only thing now is to get that filter adapter. Need to use a polarizer!

Niedermeyer,

1) The manual focus is super slow - they will fix that in a firmware upgrade (if unsure then get the camera only when you hear about it).
2) It's a rangefinder type viewfinder and as such does not show depth of field. For manual focus go to EVF but see 1 above.
3) Average battery life depends on how you set your camera. I use OVF with back LCD off. Played and shot with the camera all day and it just dropped 1/3 of a bar.
4) Storing of image is a bit show IMO but no slower than the GF-1 or EP-2 (RAW).

I still love it - the form factor and OVF is simply fantastic (just switch off instant replay of your previous shot). Bloody irritating that. Fuji needs to make some refinements to the firmware and software thats for sure but hey it's version 1.
