Fuji X100

Totally agree.........I will buy an 35mm L lens for my 5D2 instead.
really, a lens that is heavier and more expensive than the X100, and whose volumetric size (the lens only) is only slightly smaller than the X100, on a body that is much heavier and bigger than the X100... possibly the target audience is a bit different... ;)

I think it's not fair to compare a 5D Mk II and an X100. From my experience with street photography, I have found that people tend to be wary of photographers carrying DLSRs with big lenses, less so with people carrying 'dinky little cameras'

Another advantage with the X100 for street photography is (hopefully) the ability to turn off ALL sounds and shoot VERY discreetly :)

I have the NX10 and I am sure it doesn't work or at least to the level that it is actually useful.

I am pretty sure that is the case too for NEX and Oly. I am not sure for panny as I heard their contrast AF is pretty good but I doubt it is that level yet.

Kind of curious, which contrast AFC detection do you think is functional?

For me functional means to be able to TRACK a moving object and that usually mean predictive focus.
So what you actually mean is that the continuous tracking function of these mirrorless interchangeable cameras is not at the same level as that of DSLRs and as long as it is not at the same level, you consider them to be not functional at all.

Well, I have NX10, NX100, NEX5, GF2, EP 1/2 and E-PL2 and their continuous tracking do work (some brands better than others) even if they do not match that of DSLRs in efficiency. To me, that's not the same as 'contrast detection does not work with ANY MOVING object'.

Even with DSLRs, predictive tracking efficiency varies from brand to brand and I have tried them all...Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Sony... Even with the best, there would be situations where tracking would fail too. No DSLR can track every moving object 100% of the time. ;)

...very very strange ...:o
to compare a 5D MKII and an X100 :bsmilie:

and it is impossible to use a "big-heavy-maschine-gun-DLRS for street photographs..!!

for me, the X100 is the perfect tool,
and I think, the IQ with the superb Fujinon Asperical lens is higher than the 5DMKII & N etc..

Hmmm... maybe we should do a shoot with a retro cam theme together, when we manage to get hold of one x100 .. hehehe.. ;p

Just for the look of it.... I WANT IT.

not to worry, it comes with manual focus

Why cannot use DSLR for street photographs? :dunno:

X100 is a nice retro looking camera imo... i think it will double up as a backup for many DSLR owners like myself... but the hefty price tag, is good enough for me to by a L lens liao!!!

I agree tracking moving object is never 100% and it is also dependent on the photographer skill. Functional to me is like maybe 60% hit rate while my NX is probably giving my like 10% with the 30mm f/2....

the point is that the contrast detection AFC has to continually focus and misfocus (to get contrast variation) as it does not know if it is in focus....

I know you have many brands so I am really interested in your opinons. Do you have the 30mm with the NX10? Or the 20mm f1.7 with the panny? Is the panny better?

Many people has only experience with small aperture lens for MIL as there are probably only a few wide aperture lens with thin DOF out there for MIL. Samsung 30mm f/2 and panny 20mm f1.7. And now fuji 23mm f/2.

been lusting for it for long time...
but after knowing the RP at $1699.. i'm a bit hesitant >_<
please people... poison me more...

Seriously, guys. Apart from portability and beautiful design, I don't see why this camera is so attractive... It's just normal APS-C sensor. How different do you expect it to be from other cameras with APS-C sensors? Furthermore, it comes with a fixed lens (Seriously?). Other than some legendary photographer who shoots with a single prime lens for most of his life, I have never seen anybody else who can live with just one prime lens.

In terms of portability, however, this X100 has many very competent rivals, such as the Sony NEX series, the Samsung NX series, the Lumix GF series, which all come with interchangable lenses.

So I guess it all boils down to the beautiful external design then... Maybe the viewfinder adds a few more scores... But considering it's price, I highly doubt that these few scores can make much of a difference.

Or maybe you guys are just darn so rich...

i don't see why a fixed prime lens would be a limitation.. only those with limited creativity will be limited by this.. i have been using a fixed lens RF for quite a few months now, having sold my DSLR with the lenses.. and i have no regret at all.. the fixed lens actually makes me think more of the composition and not just merely zoom or change lenses.. furthermore, fuji stated that the choice of fixed lens is to really bring out the quality of the lens.. different lens produces different IQ, and fuji doesn't want to compromise that.. we also hardly see sensor dust issue with fixed lens camera..

as of portability, it is definitely smaller than nex with zoom lens, about the same size as the lumix, but in terms of built quality, guess who has alloy body, with built in VF so that there will be no protruding part from the camera? and which one comes with a DSLR sized sensor?

don't forget that fujinon lenses have been proven to be superior line of lenses..

in terms of looks, well.. i don't need to elaborate..

for me, i am attracted to:
-the BUILT-IN VF (both OPTICAL and electronic)
-the shutter speed dial, which IMO beats all the electronic scroll dials..
-fujinon FIXED lens..
-good, if not great image quality (i have seen people from RFF tweaking the EV of the sample images to bring out the shadow and highlight details, and it was great..)
-portability (i don't need to worry about other "lenses", and which one to bring)
-ergonomics (from the layout of the dials&controls)
-the gorgeous vintage RF look.. which of the newer EVILs can beat this?

Fixed lens also means less opportunity to get poisoned and end up with more lenses :)

the viewfinder appeals to me as with the video capabilities. but the look although retro is not very clean spolit by the weird side grip. from the looks of it, it shows a bump so gentle i don't think it is functional. shld just have an optional grip like the lx5 or x1.

agree 100% with your statement:)

"don't see why a fixed prime lens would be a limitation....

...move more and not sooooo lazy to play with the zoom or 20 lenses....;)

The most fun i ever had was when i was shooting with a prime lens. Even when i had a zoom lens, for my street shooting i would leave it at about 28mm full-frame equivalent, preselect focus (zone focus), and just go crazy. With this camera, I plan to revisit the experience.

A prime is seriously not a hindrance. Just zoom with your feet. As you do so, you spend more time thinking about your picture, and it will show in the quality of the pictures you take

I only feel that the Fuji would suit me better if it had something like 40-50MM focal length instead. but the fact that it is a prime is no bother at all....to me at least

So true. My best pics were taken with a 50/1.4. Sneaker zooming almost always gets me better or more interesting perspectives

Walked past Alan Photos at Sim Lim Sq just now. The X100 is likely to be available in mid March. Indicative price is $1,599/-

That's about the price of a lightly used Nikon d300s, which would probably outperform it every way

Sigh, the price of retro...

More of the price of compactness with aps-c sensor and f2 lens.
