Just got my S6500 today and was testing it out on my usual models.
Though the CCD of the S6500 is supposed to be the same as that of the F30, I can't help feeling that its noise performance at high ISO is better.

Although I haven't seen the 100% crop, it looks like ISO 800 and 1600 are very usable on the S6500fd at least if the picture is not very large.

I think it's a better choice than most prosumer cameras which have image stabiliser but poor performance at high ISO.

Let's see how the forthcoming S9600 fares in comparison to the S6500fd.

No post processing but this particular shot (#3) was taken in RAW format and converted to jpeg. It's low noise level surprised me too as it seemed to be better than what the F30 could achieve under the same condition. Could be that shooting in RAW helps in reducing noise level more than shooting in jpeg.

Yes. There is a 58mm filter thread for the use of filters.

I tink in most situation Raw based photo will look better than in-camera JPEG. I really like the raw photo taken with the S6500, but I don't like the the extra step in the workflow. I am lazy by nature.

I know this is going to sound like a broken record but...

1. How fast to record the RAW image to card?

2. How is the ergo like? Fast? Good to handle?

Reading the manual of both the F30 and S6500FD, I notice that the S6500FD has a real manual mode where you can control everything from shutter to aperture to exposure whereas the F30 has a crippling manual mode where you can do none of the above except ISO. It does have shutter and aperture priority mode however which compensates somewhat. Also notice the S6500FD has P mode and a histogram. Was the histogram useful?

The first 2 pics were taken in jpeg and turned out very good too as far as noise level is concerned, especially #2 which was at IS0 800. It was very obviously better to my eye than those I got from the F30 at the same ISO speed.

Wah I did not know cat's eye can be so scary. In any case, the crop looks very good for a iso 800 jpeg. Is it because the lens quality of the S6500 is better?

As a ex- Nikon D50 user, the ergo on the S6500 is quite good. Handgrip and weight distribution is comfortable in my hand.

wow, 6500 noise performance looks good... for me, i would go for better noise performance rather than having IS.
btw, is the lens on the 6500 diff from the one used on 9500? i dun really like the lens they use on my 9500....

Played my friend's S6500fd just now. (Was 'stunned' for a while when the flash pop-up automatically):embrass:

And I really like the camera very much.
However, I have not tried viewing the pictures using computer yet. Will the photos taken with this camera looks nice in PC viewing actual size? I tried some other models, and some of them have many noise when viewed in actual size, but not in printouts.

1 and 2 also didn't have PP applied? They are very sharp especially 1.

Yes, better high ISO performance because of 6th generator Super HDR CCD (vs 5th) and less pixels too (6MP vs 9MP).

Unless there are some better buys, the S6500fd would be my next buy.

I will wait for a few months first for others to test drive it and report any problems.

In the mean time, I will continue with my prosumer Nikon 5700.

The FD feature will be a boon for those who travel a lot. No more shots where the camera has focussed on the background because the stranger you asked to take your photo doesn't know how to lock focus on you the subject.

Hey, you're right. Never thought of that, really . Very frustrating indeed. And funny too, specially when they would hold my dslr at arm's length.
