It's not very difficult to understand ... along the way, as 'everyone' 'progressed', somewhere along the way, some people forgot what it was like to be human ... in varying, and often, selective degrees.

DM, it is actually very difficult to understand. Maybe it's our different up bringing.

Any thoughts, suggestions and actions to segregate a group of people, to make them live only in certain locations, just because they are from different cultural, ethnic and social background, at the very best, discrimination, but more like bigotry and racism.

Why people do what they did, is important to understand in order to address the root cause. However, understanding why they did it, does not make their discriminations and bigotries any more acceptable and any less hurtful.

These people, have they ever thought, if the tables are turned?

System going wrong way .

Should increase salaries ,so more locals can survive not hover the salaries waiting for FW .

Our garment received the Highest pay in the world and yet WE dont even earn a quarter of it ?

Not Justify .

No wonder Money Not Enough part1(10 years ago) then still not enough part 2(2008) are reborn .

Are Neo waiting for part3 2018 ?

I think we already left as quiters as some said .

The head hunters are always after them. The moment they leave, they will get double, triple or even qua...what thay are getting now.

Just look at some of them who had left the service...

You're absolutely right. Every country has problems. But some acknowledge them, some don't. Singapore happens to fall into the latter category. We pretend problems don't exist, and thus everyone is "happy" since these problems are "non-existent". We sweep it under the rug, and it will come back to haunt us later.

Why does it concern you when I'm leaving? It's not like you can verify it anyway.

So why are we builting dormitories?

Like it or not, we need blue colar workers from overseas to come here to help build the economy.

Yes, their habits are different. But honestly, many have been trying to get used to our culture, our food and our habits. It has not be easy for them, given that many things here are horribly expensive. They cant afford a cosy lunch at Crystal Jade and a nice drink plus deserts like what you and me would like to have with friends and family. They chose to eat from a grass patch with no shelter over their head.

The litering problem can be reported and notices can be put up, but to look down on them, it really is sad.

Over the past 3years, I have a hard time employing people as both locals and malaysians dont seem to like taking the lower end jobs anymore. Honestly, locals do not really have a choice when it comes to pay. They have to consider the high expenses here and they do need a good paying job to pay for hdb morgage, car, children expenses, parents' medical expenses, etc.

So, like it or not, we need these blue colar workers to fit into the workforce and contribute side by side with the locals. Please bear with them as they would when you are in their country as a tourist.

We can do by increasing blue collar salaries and so on .

Just that our garment have too much glc in our market ,turn out to be the biggest employer in singapore .

So to cut cost ,this are what they are doing now by letting any lower paid FW in and let the locals dissolve by itself .

Like it or not ,we are telling you again we are not happy with it .

If there are wellfare and taken care for the ages ,we might swallow it down ,but it is not .

increasing the salary of blue collar workers would kill certain industries in singapore. with land already going at a premium, and oil at record prices, raising blue collar salaries would push the cost of operating in singapore thorugh the roof for plenty of companies here.

you missout somethings ,the top higher management have always increase their pockets instead of sharing the profit to their fellows like us .

yeah, but what can we do about it? lets face it, thats the corporate world for you. and btw, it isn't always true (but more often than not, it is)

that's not the way forward. there are things that can be done to affect change. eg, as consumers of goods & services, we can make choices to patronise the company at our liking.

while its not always true, the widening rich-poor divide is proof things are bad enough. & it'll only get worse.

haha yeah we do have to do something about it, but my point is, for something like this, you can't initiate any change just by FEELING that it isn't fair and stating it in a forum like this. I'm not saying i know a better way, but as people say, talk can be cheap if you don't talk into the right ears or take action.

yeah, the rich poor divide is a chasm now, not just a divide. and there are no signs of it narrowing, only of it getting wider.

Its a cyclical damage if raising wages is the way to solve the problem. When wages get raised 20% to match current + future inflation, the company will increase price of goods. Demand drops as people cant afford the goods, boss retrench workers and cut middle management pay. Boss goes bust when sales hit the pits.

The current situation is, in order for small & medium businesses to cope with rocketing costs, they shave profits (ie boss take pay cut) and maintain wages. Many expenses are trimmed as well and entertainment would be a luxury more than a need. Everyone in the firm cling on and hope the market rebounds. But the outlook does not look too promising anymore.

One cost cutting measure which some firm adopts is to cheat consumers with inferior products/ bad quality raw materials. But these companies wont stay on as this would be their last straw to reap a good short term harvest.

One interest thing is, while the private sector struggles, the other sector blooms with high salaries, so high it is acclaimed to be highest in the world. Wow, Singapore is still No. 1 after all.

to sustain our economy we need foreign workers on the cheap to fill up vacancies. to ram up sales, we woo tourists dollars instead (F1 for example). with major events in the works papers always report a projected spike in sales with the influx of these visitors. nothing is said about locals heading to the shops. :dunno:

where's the S'porean & PR & all the rest (foreign students, transitional wokers) who live here in the economic equation?

Any figure to show? Would be interesting to know more! Maybe should also cut their pay if they are No 1 in the world!

One thing for sure, because of them, we are not as bad as many other countires. Big players are asking us to help to bail them out.

Do you choose to pay a monkey peanut or do you want somebody to manage your place well in the event of crisis.

Which country in the world would you see .. dishing out hard cash to her people.

any country with a pension system for those retired?

which other developed country (similiar or on par with Sg economic status) do you see seniors collecting empty drink cans & cardboards as often as Sg?

* not that i've been to that many developed countries recently...

They chose to do it. There is no need for them to do so. They belong to the era where every cent count.

This generation will soon be gone. It is because of them we are enjoying the fruit. They are thrifty and don't be surprise that their bank account is more than us.

They live on the very bare minimun and they work very hard.

This generation will be gone soon. You would not see them anymore!

Do you know that children nowaday do not pick up 20 cents coin if they see them! But to them, they will pick it up! It is money!

They are a special breed. I salute them!

What I cannot stand are some foreigners, collection $1 for 3 packets of tissue paper and spend the money in their home town.

That is a good one.

Just hope that we must always remember that we are human being.
