film scanners

I'm using the Epson v700 scanner.

My question is, when i choose the Digital ICE option, each pic normally takes about 10 mins to scan. Is that normal? I'm scanning at like 2400dpi

Will using a faster computer help? Or is this entirely scanner dependent.
It is PC dependent for the Digital ICE processing.

I'm using a mac mini 2ghz core 2 duo, 4gb ram with intel x-25 ssd.

Outputting to 2400 dpi uncompressed tiff file, not jpg.

Each file came up to be about 52mb

Maybe i should go time again. The epson program itself says 8mins, but we all know that might be inaccurate

i kind of jinxed the previous epson scanner my school had,

now they have a new canon one,
i haven't checked the model no and stuff,
BUT IT IS THE MOST AWESOME OBEDIENT THING EVER, i put it's photo on facebook

edit: i should actually write something useful right, so
1. it does the preview scan in under 3 minutes
2. then you just select whichever frames you want
3. at 1200 dpi, each fram takes approx 5 mins to scan
4. its shiny and all your fingerprints get left on it

i like using enlargers for B&W though, its part of the reason why i shoot on film, to play with all the variables, i screw up quite a bit though.
not enough patience to be a good film photographer ;A;

where is your facebook

where is your facebook

it's a ah very lousy picture takin with photobooth on a mac,

okay, i googled it, it's this one http://www.warehouseexpress.com/webcontent/product_images/large/37/1029304.jpg
Canon CS5600F i think, not sure how much it costs though, i can ask my teachers how much it is and where they got it if youd like.
its a communal scanner, so it has to do quite a bit of scanning other than just film, so ya.

edit: i checked, its a 8800F i think

Okok

Check with you guys again

Digital ICE (Quality)
Color Correction

Scanner says 18 mins to finish scanning. Is this normal?

perfectly normal

oh yeah, and output as tiff

18 mins for 1 scan is maddd

wait until cows come home

actually it is not necessary to turn on ICE for every scans, unless the negative itself is exceptionally dusty or scratched.

i find that the normal dust removal is sufficent to get things looking good.

It will be crazy to turn on ICE for an entire roll of films/ slide :bsmilie:

Some of your scans don't seem to come across as dust free hence the query on ICE.

They now scans with hardly any dust visible. i realised i've been using "medium" instead of "high" on the dust removal settings.

i've tried ICE on some of my negatives but they come out funny, maybe it's because my negatives are not scratched and maybe it's black and white which is not recommended ;)

The V700 can scan 4 rolls or 6 frames 35mm negatives. That's 24 frames on a single pass scan. Potentially, can save u alot of time if you scan a few rolls after a few days of intensive shooting.

8800F & V500 has 2 rolls, hence a roll of 36 frames need to reload the scanner 3 times.

It can also take 6 frames of 6x6 medium format negatives. Hence really saves a lot of time. In my own opinion...

A good scanner is a worth while investment if you intend to shoot more. Much better investment than digital bodies. You will be surprised at how much resolution you can get from negatives and slides scan if done properly. Don't have to spend $$$ on all those full frame digital cameras... we already have full frame 80 years ago...

Hi Chiif, is there any scanning resolution performance difference between the V500 and the V700 other than the scan speed? I find that their specs on the internet not really easy to compare apple to apple.

Dear fellow wise men, sorry to interrupt this thread...can V700 scan format like 6x7, 6 x 4.5 and 35mm panoramics??....:embrass:

Thanks I think I'll let a lab with a Noritsu machine do the job.

Funny as in funny-coloured?

Noritsu's with ICE, as I understand, don't work with true black / white film. ICE technology works via infra-red, and works only with C41 negatives. True B/W (Fuji Neopan, Kodak Tri-X) has a different base which interferes with infra-red (Wikipedia article).

If you're using true black/white, stick to setting the scanner to black/white mode. If it's C41 (e.g. Ilford XP2), then ICE will work just fine.

i've checked with challenger at funan regarding the canoscan 8800 and they are out of stocks.

at S$319 are there any alternative scanner which can "batch" scan at 6 or 12 frames with not much time difference (in terms of scanning- i assume i won't be bothered by warming up time of some makes:think:)

reason for being desperate and impatient is because thanks to Mr Chiff's instructions on his website, i just self developed my first roll of black and white and want to see the results :complain:

won't contact sheets do the job?

Yes it can scan all these film formats.

As with post #56, traditional B&W film containing silver halides will not be able to be scanned with Digital ICE as those chemicals will be detected just like dust as IR does not pass thru them.

There will be significant difference when you enlarge the image at higher resolution scans.
