Does this one "breathe" as much as the 105mm? I love my 105 but as ken pointed out before, it breathes when it's in the maximum repro ratio which annoys me a lot. :(

breathe?

do u mean focus hunting?
it does hunt if u r too close to the subject, otherwise, the AF-S motor is very quiet n fast

....i do like this lens; but i just can't leave the 35mmf1.8dx behind.... tho' the fact is, the 85mm does give a better close-up shots and bokeh!
sample shot with 35mmf1.8dx (auto, hand-held & no flash)

what do you mean by "breathe"?

can post link?

may i know which teleconverter is suitable for this len?
is the nikon teleconverter suitable?...

i am not sure about that as i did not try it.
but i would suggest using extension tubes instead if you want to increase the magnification to greater than 1:1

As a lens barrel extends or retracts during focusing or zooming, it will draw draw in or expel air respectively. This is the 'breathing' effect that is in question.

hmmm...

afs 105 f/2.8 micro is internal focusing also rite?

haha like this also can
heng i shoot macro using Manual focus, thus no "breathing"

images r nice ortega...hmmm.....still love my 85mm f1.4

no.
the 85 will not 'breathe' as u term it

...that is why internal focusing is supposedly dust free!

Since the 85/3.5 doesn't have the "IF" designate, meant the lens barrel will extend when focusing?

you are wrong it's tue IF internal foucsing, everything same as AFS 105mm.
maybe you only know AF-D & tamron SP 90 all are extend focusing.

This Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Lens is a DX-formatted medium telephoto Micro lens. It is ideal for extreme close-up and general photography including portraits. The lens will autofocus from infinity to 10.8" producing a life-size (1:1) image.

The lens also features Nikon's VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization. This allows handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. This is ideal for macro close-up work.

Features

Compact, DX-format Micro NIKKOR Close-up Lens An ideal choice for close-up, nature, portrait and general photography.
Close focusing to 0.9 feet Extends versatility with focusing from infinity to life-size (1:1 reproduction ratio).
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images.
Extra-low Dispersion (ED) element Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at wide aperture settings.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) Enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.
Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) For fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
Internal Focus (IF) Provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject working distance throughout the focus range.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm Renders more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.
M/A focus mode switch Enables quick response to changing situations between manual and autofocus operation.

only i found it's without swiching to Full or Half macro mode.
unlike VR 105mm.

it's the photo.

jus completed a afternoon walk-about ard orchard road.
will post some pics soon...

just got myself the same lense - tack sharp and fast AF.

at f3.5 it is difficult to really blur the background though. with VR turned on, only manage to gain 2 stop. the vr2 mechanism "rocks" - it produces a discernible audible sound with each shutter.

just my observation.
