Well coming from IT background I would say that the engineer probably still want to perfect it but that means delay in producing it. However there is such thing as time to market. So they have to release early and issue a patch later.
It is like that even for software & game.
This software is in microchip. It is good already that it can be patched. So I understand and greatful that it can be done and they are doing something about it.
According to David Chua in his review of the GF1 and the EPL1, although the GF1 AF feels faster, at the end of the day, the results still the same.
Verdict:
In handling the cameras, immediately you will feel that GF1’s auto-focusing is faster and seems more decisive and definite. Initial impression is that the GF1 “found” focus and snapped the shutter much faster than the E-PL1. BUT upon scrutinizing both cameras’ files in my computer, I have found that the GF1 may have activated it’s shutter much faster and easier than the E-PL1 but to my disappointment, the hit rates are just as bad as the E-PL1! The number of “useable” images shot in iAuto mode for both cameras, chasing after running kids, are just about the same amount! We are talking about nailing the focus.

haha...definitely not in my case having use the ep-1 & gf1 side by side....even my neice say why oly so lousy..when we are shooting at her bd party...
The epl-1 is markly better....but still not in the same league as a gf1
i chose oly for the same reason!Frankly speaking (well...me too and almost bought while testing it out...but something finally holding me back.....:bsmilie, I'd since chosen OLY for its colours and sharpness ( way before any PS done, you see...:bigeyes::thumbsup: )

I have updated my E-P1 a few hours ago and test it with my 17mm lens.
IMHO...Basically It is faster, a tad bit faster I would say. To describe it it is like firmware 1.2 with improved speed. I said so because firmware 1.3 tend to make the green indicator blink earlier before the autofocus lock (kinda faking the autofocus to make it look 'as if' it was faster), but F1.4, it is for real and Altho E-p1 would be considered as a dinosaur in a world of PEN gadgetry ... It is good to see that olympus keep trying hard to improve where they were lacking behing.

I saw some of the pictures he had on his website (whoever David Chua is... sorry arh, I quite sua ku). Why is his shutter speed so slow when taking pictures of running kid? It looks like he's having shakes and stuffs rather than an autofocus issue. I mean iAuto... yes. But surely, iAuto means changing to setting to suit the photo, right? Sorry, I don't use the Auto modes but there should be some setting in iAuto to say you want to take fast moving kids rather than an inanimate flower, right?

What the above means is that while using EVF, when one presses Menu button or Image Preview button, it switches to LCD automatically, leaving EVF showing nothing, black.
To switch view back to EVF, one presses the EVF button, and Menu or Image Preview shows on EVF. Half-press of shutter also returns one to EVF, but no more in Menu or Image Preview.
So, this is not ideal when one prefers to preview using the EVF or look at the menus through the EVF. It can still be done, but one has to press the EVF button.
I prefer the old version, control of viewing is under the power of the user. Anyway, c'est la vie, will get used to it.
