Faster AF coming to PEN?

Finally me too, firmware upgraded & tested. My opinion is with Oly 14-42mm the AF speed difference is obvious but with Pana 20mm seems no difference.

Anyway, happy with the new firmware
i have the same feeling too... the panny 20mm like not much diff... but definitely faster on the 14-42 kit lens

"- Improved operation so menus and images can be displayed on the rear LCD monitor when using the electronic viewfinder VF-2."

What the above means is that while using EVF, when one presses Menu button or Image Preview button, it switches to LCD automatically, leaving EVF showing nothing, black.

To switch view back to EVF, one presses the EVF button, and Menu or Image Preview shows on EVF. Half-press of shutter also returns one to EVF, but no more in Menu or Image Preview.

So, this is not ideal when one prefers to preview using the EVF or look at the menus through the EVF. It can still be done, but one has to press the EVF button.

I prefer the old version, control of viewing is under the power of the user. Anyway, c'est la vie, will get used to it.

.
wish i have an evf to understand what you are experiencing...

just updated my EP-2. the AF is noticably faster on the 20mm F1.7 and pana 14-45 is even faster now :) happy with the update.

Hi folks, how long does it takes to update?

My camera seems to take longer than 10min.

Can I chk, does the camera still stop down the 20/1.7 as you focus it before reopening up the aperture before you shoot? (i.e. assuming that aperture priority is set for F1.7)

After updating, AF with the 17mm f/2.8 is now much, much faster than with the 20mm f/1.7 which is now simply lethargic by comparison.

Am I right to say that 20mm is 'slow' because of the AF mechanism?

I tested with pana 14-45mm and it's noticeably faster in low light.

The 20/1.7 is using the old AF DC micro motor (why Panny, why?)
While the 14-45, 14-140, 45 & others using AF linear motor (alternating current)

On my E-P2, not much speed gain for 20mm after the FW update, have yet to try the 7-14mm...

The update is only for camera right? The update is version 1.4.
I updated it, the AF on the zoom kit and 20/1.7 seems to be a little faster now.
Another thing i notice is that it is able to AF better in dim lightings now.

Think GH1 is about 1/3 of the time needed to AF than EPL-1 at 0.2sec compared to 0.5-0.6s of the latter.

Of course Olympus is not going to kill its own FT system so early in the game.

tried the 7-14mm on E-P2 after the FW update, its blazing fast just like i expected, since its AF performance is similar to 14-45mm. the 20mm, OTOH, not so much gain.

Very good firmware!!! Upz!! DON'T WAIT ALREADY!! DO IT NOW. :D

So after the updates

On a EP1 / EP2 / EPL1
which lens has the fastest focusing?

Olympus 14-42
Panasonics 14-45
Olympus 17
Panasonics 20
Olympus 9-18
Panasonics 7-14

any one did a test ?

I hope to find out the focusing comparision
for 14-42mm, 14-45mm, 17mm, 20mm.
can anyone advice me?

The ability to view the menu and playback the main LCD while you have the VF-2 is a nice little capability, but I can't say it's a "WOW" type upgrade. Still looking for the option to program the Fn button to do more (like focus zoom).

I m on epl1...the 14-45 is fastest among the 4 lenses

Just updated my epl1.

swoping the oly 14-42 to panny 14-45 has a much bigger improvement than the firmware update itself. But the update works & appreciated.

However apart from slower AF, oly m4/3 cam needs quite a bit more of constrast to AF compare to gf1. In low light, it still hunts and give up AF, while gf1 cruises along..

So still room to move up..

I also updated yesterday

AF is definitely faster

but when I used my panasonics 20mm.
After I push the focus button the 20 will start to focus but it did not stop there
when I move the camera and point to other object,
why is there a constant sound.
it seems that the 20mm is focusing continuously
(I did not even touch any buttons after the 1st focusing)

anyone knows why?

I have the same experience on my epl1 although I have to admit I didn't notice before the firmware upgrade. It seems quite odd...

Could be programming error, highly unlikely but not impossible
