I think the easiest may be to do just 1 -day outings without overnights.

Any time we think of an over-night, it seems that 'the gods' are against us.

I would love to de even a 1-day train trip ... just to feel de fresh air and watch the vast Malaysian country-side go by ... stop anywhere along the way and explore a bit before catching a bus or the next train. But even then, due to train schedules, chances are it would end up a weekend affair at the very least.
