Consider side lighting.... from one side downwards...

ah... but no more macaroons.... I finished all of them... feeling quite sick now from the sugar.... :p

Actually, yes. Glue. Depending on what item is involved, various substances are used as a binding agent. ;)

Come join us and learn together, and share resources!

Refer back to the link for the first mini-assignment that you can easily shoot at home. ;)

That will create unsightly shadows. The key to lighting food is to bring out the shape, texture and colour of the food item without harsh shadows. ;-)

Quite easy to visualise if one is familiar with light and lighting techniques. ;)

You know my fave peeve abut togs these days right? :bsmilie:

Sigh, time for me to brush up on the basics also. Getting rusty with all the automation. :embrass:

I get the picture... but generally I'd want to try doing so with minimal lights and if possible with only portable lights like small flashes...

HOKAY!

Leong can make it nex Tuesday, I can make it nex Tuesday.

Van, can you make it, and can you arrange with Liz? Can you contact her for us and let us know where to meet etc?

I can bake some nice banana bread for tea, or if you guys prefer, my 'best-seller' so far has been a savoury Italian Herb Bread. Let me know?

I like to work with existing light mostly.

Some of the best and award-winning food photographers use only existing light as far as possible.

But whether one uses existing light or artificial light sources, it's still imperative that one knows how to control light, and to use what's required for a given task be it one or multiple sources, including modification.

There's always more than one way to skin a cat, and KISS is always a good approach, but while I try to use as few sources as possible for technical reasons, I won't hesitate to build-up the set with what ever lights necessary. However, the opposite side of the equation are the folks that add and add light on indiscriminately.

You mentioned adding an opposing flash to counter one set of shadows earlier, but what it also does is add another set of shadows. Look at a football game where 4 light sources are used to light up the playing field. Each player has FOUR sets of shadows!

Also, using speedlights (as opposed to using studio flash) is one of the easiest ways of making life living hell, because you literally do not have prolonged preview.
