I remembered seeing something about coffee.... seems like fun :heart:
That will create unsightly shadows. The key to lighting food is to bring out the shape, texture and colour of the food item without harsh shadows. ;-)

I get the picture... but generally I'd want to try doing so with minimal lights and if possible with only portable lights like small flashes... :sweat:

I like to work with existing light mostly.
Some of the best and award-winning food photographers use only existing light as far as possible.
But whether one uses existing light or artificial light sources, it's still imperative that one knows how to control light, and to use what's required for a given task be it one or multiple sources, including modification.
There's always more than one way to skin a cat, and KISS is always a good approach, but while I try to use as few sources as possible for technical reasons, I won't hesitate to build-up the set with what ever lights necessary. However, the opposite side of the equation are the folks that add and add light on indiscriminately.
You mentioned adding an opposing flash to counter one set of shadows earlier, but what it also does is add another set of shadows. Look at a football game where 4 light sources are used to light up the playing field. Each player has FOUR sets of shadows!
Also, using speedlights (as opposed to using studio flash) is one of the easiest ways of making life living hell, because you literally do not have prolonged preview.
