Hi SniperD,
Your sunrise / sunset pics are stunning!!
For the last pic u posted (day 03 grand bali beach with the faraway fisherman), roughly what time of the day did u take this pic? (estimated 7am?)
I'm still dreaming of the day when I can take such a lovely lovely pic... (donno when)... :confused:

Kuta Square - Kuta beach - Sunset.
These 2 kids were so engrossed in their playing of sand that they are oblivious to the presence of this photog happily composing and shooting them. This is my personal fav shot :)

Bali14.jpg

Day 03 - Grand Bali Beach - This guy has been working with his fishing net ever since I came to the beach... a quiet being with a backdrop of mountains makes this shot very special. A pity I wasn't ready to go down to his area to take a close up but I like this far-away composition

* continued - Day 03

Sigh... still in the midst of doing post-processing for a client... taking a break and did up some more Bali pics. :sweat:

After taking the sunrise at Grand Bali beach, we head out to this Temple and here's the continuation:

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - A commotion was sighted a long way ahead on the road and as the bus slowed down to a crawl, I had a chance to see the lifestyle of the Balinese people outside the coach. As they sat in the cool of the shade, watching traffic and people go by, a faint hint of salutation caught my attention :)
Bali74.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - As the bus slowed down we saw a big crowd of people gathering on the road... my 1st thought went to the rioting that happened a few years back.. could this be one? Are we in danger then? In the end, it turned out to be a village funeral procession. As the tour guide explained, as Balinese people are mainly Hindus, they would cremate their dead and before that they would have a ceremony to bring the deceased to the cremation grounds. It is very interesting to note that only the ones who died of old age and natural death are allowed to be cremated in the temple grounds wherelse those who aren't will be allocated spaces elsewhere.
Bali75.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - Here, as the bus crawled nearer the crowd, it was indeed a huge crowd! say about 200 or more.... yeah I know. The villagers within the same preciect are very neighbouring and would offer their services to help out in the whole procession. Anyway, what you are witnessing in the next few shots are just considered a small-scaled "normal" funeral procession. Due to the extreme proverty circumstances in Indonesia generally, a very cheap funeral can cost up to USD$5000. Yeah, you read right, USD$5K. Anyway, these 2 men were carring one of the "props" which wasn't explained to me it's significance or usage but I can be sure it has other uses like a mobile shade
Bali76.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - These ladies are carrying the offerings on their heads to the temple area. It's really amazing to see big baskets of watermelons/ huge bundles of sarongs/ water buckets... being balanced with such ease on these womens' head. History lesson: okie, in general, women are considered lower class in Indonesia and esp. prominent in practice in Bali. The women would work to support the family while the men, nurse the baby or cultivate fighting cocks for income. The women do all the work.. admirable and respect to the women of Bali.
Bali77.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - Right, here's a close up of them passing the coach. The wealth of the family who's cremating its member is symbolised by a pagoda. So the taller your pagoda, the richer you are and of coz the bigger the turn-out. I would say we were very fortunate to have witnessed one of the local traditions in Bali on this trip : )
Bali78.jpg

* continued - Day 03

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - Here you see the start of the crowd... there's a lot more behind them. And if you noticed you will see a big prop that looked like a cow. Hindus worship the cow as part of their religion and here the cow is symbolised to be carrying the spirit of the deceased to the temple. In the past, they used live cows though. And a little way behind the makeshift cow, is the pagoda which symbolises the wealth of the family. If it's a village family, they would try to sell their belonging and bring the money to the village head or elder and he would then arrange for a funeral liken to this for the family. At this point, we were directed to a very long and narrow 1 way road which will bypass the procession. But... things didn't turn out as well as we hoped
Bali79.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - Here's the problem @.@ yeah a low concrete bridge built across this road has finally hindered us from proceeding further (and this was after travelling for about 4 - 5 km). So what's the solution? Next pic will explain everything
Bali80.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - Well, if you can't go forward, and you can't do a 3 point turn on such a narrow road and there's no place for you to reverse the bus into .. what do you do? Yes, you drive in reverse.... all the way. It's really amazing the way people in Bali drive: a little reckless yes but with a kind of road politeness never experienced in Singapore. In Bali, the drivers would horn, in a very friendly and warning sort of way, when it's approaching a turn or when a car is going too fast beside the vehicle... unlike Singapore when you horn like that, it's usually the anger and universal gesturing. Our driver's assistant is the true hero this hour when he ran/ walked/ jogged and directed the traffic at the same time as the bus did its long way reverse to the junction where we turned in. The temperature outside - about 36 degrees. Totally scorching!
Bali81.jpg

Day 03 - Enroute to a famous temple (name unknown) - Passing by grasslands and padi fields, I took the chance to take some shots of road life from the bus : ) Finally, after 25mins of careful driving, the bus finally turned out to the road junction (at this time, the funeral procession has long passed us) and the journey to this temple continued
Bali82.jpg

Day 03 - Famous temple (name unknown). Why this temple is considered famous is due to the royalty that it stands on. I may be getting my facts wrong here but this is what I can remember from the tour guide. This temple's built for the royalty and the royalty would also cremate their family members here. The significance of this place is the kori agung which is showed in the next pic. There are many stores outside the temple entrance which sell food stuff, snacks and drinks. Here's a shot of one of the store keeper and her daughters.
Bali83.jpg

* Continued - Day 03

Day 03 - Unknown temple - Okie, here's the Kori Agung. This structure you see appeared almost religiously in every Balinese home. Interesting note to add is why the steps to the door is built so high - to prevent the demons from coming into the house. The doors are also built narrow for entry due to the same reason that a demon is too big size to enter thru this door. This is the royal doorway that the royal family built in this temple and we are here to see this... and use the toilet ..... only :P Metering for this shot's a headache
Bali84.jpg

Day 03 - Unknown temple - Heh heh heh... the uncle who's the janitor of the washroom. Although I saw a wonderful photographic opportunity (he's sitting where the sun was shining down on his face nicely) I was quite hesitant to take the shot at first. He looked a little "hostile" perhaps .... but after visiting the toilet and walking away, I knew I just have to turn back and take a shot of him. So I gestured very politely for a photograph and asked him to smile. 3 shots later, we were conversating in broken English and Berhasa Indonesia. heh heh heh.. that last shot was a bonus : )
Bali85.sized.jpg

Day 03 - Unknown temple - Heh.. something from me. As I was waiting for motorists to zoom by the road, I had my tripod with me and thought it would be a good idea to bring it to the coach 1st rather than carrying it on my shoulders. As my gf emerged from the window (btw, this is the window where I often poke my head and camera out to shoot the streetlife) I knew this could be a very interesting shot as you can see : )
Bali88.jpg

More to come.... sigh.. back to work. :sweatsm:

* Continued - Day 03

Finally got a chance to finish everything for the Bali Trip :cool:

Day 03 - Unknown temple entrance - After handing the tripod over, I waited by the side of the road for a photo opp, hoping to catch some ladies with baskets on their heads walking by or a cyclist with piles of goods on his ride... although a good wait of 10mins did not turn up anything, here's a shot of a pregnant mother and her smiling child : )
Bali89.jpg

Day 03 - Lake Beratan - Entering the pier area, you see rows of anglers with their rods and of coz, people who peddle their fishing rods. For a neat price of just SGD$2 or RP$10000, you can have yourself a rod and bait and sit there fish till the end of day.. a very tourist-y place. As I passed the shop where it sells loads of tourism stuff like cravings and T-shirts, I was attracted to this old guy who's peddling his bag of wooden whistles
Bali92.jpg

Day 03 - Lake Beratan - After a not-so-nice lunch (food's cold and not exactly very palateble), my suddenly adventurous gf decided to try parasailing! and while she went off to the ticket counter to get tickets (SGD$9 or RP$45000), took a shot of this happy thrill-seeker on his return route
Bali93.jpg

Day 03 - Lake Beratan - Right.. when my turn came, excitement is the only feeling as I have not attempted parasailing before (even in Army, I only went thru JCC) so it's liken to a mini-airborne. Like a gentle wind, the motorboat started up and I, trotting to keep up the pace on land, was lifted into the skies. The feeling of being in the air was exhilarating, and the wind, very cold. Alas, I wasn't allowed to bring up a digicam but the view was spectacular. The heart-jolting feeling of the sharp turns by the motorboat, the ever-present feeling of being tugged and release in the air, the seemingly precarious situation and fear of the thin anchor rope snapping from the boat, the strong winds blowing you AWAY from land upon the return route... added to this wonderful experience. Here's me pulling the right side ropes to swing back to the landing area and of coz, a gentle landing as the lift-off : ) I'm not that heavy ya know. ;p
Bali95.jpg

Day 03 - Temple of Mengwi - Alas Kedaton monkeys. 3 main families are significant here as our guide explained to us in her best English. Here's one of the "king" of one of the family.. an old guy who must have seen and gotten acustom to the millions of visitors who passed his territories every single day.
Bali98.jpg

* Continued - Day 03

Day 03 - Temple of Mengwi - Alas Kedaton monkeys. Like all animals, they are hyper-sensitive to your camera's electronic, this old guy here is one of the 3 heads of the families and this was my 6th shot of him at close range. I was about 0.8m away from it using a wide angle lens. He simply refused to looked at me! Common amongst animals who don't like alien objects within their radius of activity, I'm still thankful that this guy allowed me to get close without scuttering away or attacking me. In comparison, they are more acustomed to seeing humans than those monkeys in Uluwatu where the great sea cliffs pics were shot
Bali101.jpg

Day 03 - Tanah Lot - Finally, the fabled place that drew many to come to see this famous Hindu sea temple built on the enormous rock foundation 1000 years ago. Located in Tabanan district southwest in Bali, it is completely surrounded by the waters of the Indian Ocean during high tide and sunsets here are most intoxicating as most travel magazines about Bali have already proven. From the tour guide, the temple was built to worship the demons and there are certain days in the year when the worshipping of demons festivities would require everyone as a local observation of custom to stay put in your home and not have a single light on. Very intriguing custom huh? Okie, as I have read from travel books that the base of the temple has poisonous water snakes lurking in the waters (holy snakes that guard the temple), I stayed clear of the temple and ventured to the neighbouring cliff to take my shots. Here's a comical one where this group of tourists were just finished with their group shot when a huge wave crashed on the cliff and its surf splashed onto the top... I had to take this shot pretty fast before I risk getting my camera and lens wet ; P
Bali104.jpg

Day 03 - Tanah Lot - Here's the most-photographed sea temple in its afternoon glory. A pity that the guided tour planned our itinary to come here in the early afternoon and not the evening. The view's still spectacular... and I lost my camera's eyepiece here too.... darn..... : ( Okie, I have other pictures of the other side of the shore but I will post them up later as I have totally underexposed them to get the silky movement of the crashing surfs.. wish I can have ISO 50 incorporated in the 10D..
Bali105.jpg

Day 03 - Tanah Lot - Walking towards the place to see the Sea temple, you will pass by this bustling market place (selling almost the same things - touristy stuff like carvings, fabrics like batiks and sarongs, food and drinks). While shopping for some souvenirs to bring back to Singapore, I chanced upon this granny and her grand daughter at a store selling paintings : ) I was attracted by her gaze and here's the shot
Bali106.jpg

Day 03 - Tanah Lot - A old woman in her little makeshift stall selling a flourlike candy wrapped in leaves to the passing-by tourists. The cloth turban you see on her head acts as a cushion later when she packed up her stall and heaved the whole lot on her head. Another day's work.... business was bad
