EOS M: M for Mirrorless

I played around with the EOS-M at a shop for about 10 minutes. Some quick impressions:

- it's smaller than my G11
- build is solid
- AF on single focus point's speed reminds me of the X100
- The X100 will sometimes show subject has been focused but when you click the shutter, the subject is oof while the background is in focus. This didn't happen on the EOS-M
- I mounted the 24-70 II (the latest speed demon) and AF speed wasn't anything to shout home about
- LCD is sharp and touch controls are responsive
- the 18-55 images look sharp in the LCD
- Feels off to have to change most settings with the LCD instead of a physical button

Hopefully a firmware update is forthcoming to address the AF speed. And a panorama mode would be great. It'll make a very good back-up cam to my main Canon system when traveling.

AF speed needs lots of improvement for this camera to be truly usable. Tried it during the photomarathon, the size is good, image quality is good, but the AF is super sluggish. Unless you have lots of time available to put something in focus, if not you gonna miss many precious moments.

just got my hands on a Canon EOS M with the EF-M 18-55mm kit lens for a couple of days - just for a review, on my blog: check it out if u guys are interested in thsi camera: Canon EOS M: Review

Tested the EOS M with 22 f/2 lens in Canon showroom. AF is just shockingly slow. The weird part is that the G15 AF much faster. Canon must have forgotten to activate the phase sensors on the EOS-M for initial AF acquisition.

I share the same sentiments after I finally got a chance to play with the camera + 22mm pancake lens today.

i totally agree with the comments on the slow AF - with the 18-55mm its not any better. i was just shocked, testing it in my living room at night. in bright daylight its acceptable - but even then it was sometimes unpredictable

A pretty fair EOS M review

Looks like you're enjoying the camera quite a bit!

I'm wondering how is the AF performance in low light.... say indoors with so-so lighting. Just to add, I have an X100 and I know how achingly slow it can focus in lowlight so my expectations are quite tempered like you. :D

Actually I have played around with it under shop conditions with white flourescent lights. What I'm curious about are outdoor night time or indoor restaurant conditions.

Has anyone tried using touch screen focusing? According to this user:

"First I will address the AF that seems to be getting hammered in reviews

Is it really slower than the average politician’s brain? Well yes... yes it is
However that is if you use the shutter button it... is... pain... fully... dog... slow and focuses on random S___ you had no intention of focusing on. The shutter button on this camera is nearly close to useless.

Wow that’s a pretty big smack down you say?

Yeah sure is, however then I discovered the touch operated shutter mode and face recognition and tracking
Quite frankly this is seriously good it makes the AF maybe 10 times faster than the ponderous shutter button with wierd crappy focus selection mode.

How to describe the touch to shoot?
It’s kind of like spot focus... so you tap the screen on the thing you want to shoot and bam the camera focuses on that thing and takes the shot at the same time. Fast. Not as fast as say a 1D, 5Dmk3 or probably even a 7D
But it's quick, and a very usable quick at that. Now the face tracking thing if you have the continuous AF enabled with the face tracky gizmo then it’s even faster since it’s already tracking faces and is basically nearly there you simply tap the face its already tracking and it shoots even if you tap something else it’s still faster. Kind of like a servo but better..."

The prime is slower than the zoom since the early previews and that hasn't changed.

Would be interesting to see if Canon will release native EF-M USM lenses since on EF the STM lenses also seem to be slower.

That's doesn't even make sense, a USM lens would be slower.

Oh? Is STM faster than USM? I always thought it has smoother zooming and quieter only, especially for video.

The 40mm on the 5D3 isn't that fast no?

Note: just so there's no confusion, I meant ring USM

Ring USM is faster than STM for sure on a Dslr. But dunno if this is true on an EOS-M.

Yes, its a fun camera. With its non obtrusive look esp with the 22mm, it does makes it easier to take street shots.

The auto focus is ok to me indoor at night. Faster and more accurate than x100 to me.

Of cos it depends on ur af setting. E.g. Setting it on single pt on AV or TV mode with make it faster etc.

There are many focus customisation in the cam. One can even do zone focus like the x100 with it.

While its not the a camera with the fastest af in the market. It does provide great IQ and good user experience.

One of my friend comment on the cam "i blame u, cos u tempted me to buy the eos m, and i super love it." (She is a lomo, x100 and 60d user by the way) Maybe when one can shoot with x100 u can shoot with many camera. :)
