EOS M: M for Mirrorless

This is the first mirrorless camera from Canon. There will be new or upgraded models coming very soon, like next year. The product life cycle will be very short.
For those who can't wait, buy now else wait for next year.

I hope Canon can get their act together: they must match Olympus contrast detect AF speed and put up a wide range of lenses. I am most tempted to sell all my Canon gear and jump onto the m43 bandwagon. The Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 (305g) and 35-100 f/2.8 (360g) lenses are beckoning me....

But it took Pany 4 years to come up with the f2.8 zoom lenses. Canon's MILC is in infancy by comparison. I think a lot of people are missing the fact that the EOS-M is basically between 2-4 generations behind the latest MILCs.

I'm hoping they at least upgrade the AF with a firmware update. I really want to be able to use the EOS-M as a back-up system. Then I can sell the OM-D...

I have used the Panasonic GF2 and GX1.

In term of focus, I agreed that EOS M is disappointing. However, if you look from other aspects like LCD, WB and metering, I would say Canon beats Panasonic. One simple test, you try to take a backlit shot using the GF2 or GX1.

When using my 70-200F2.8IS on this camera... its really front heavy. AF is slow despite having using it on the F2.8 lens.

Tried it with my 70-200 too. Very unbalance. But then again. One will need at least a 40D sized dslr to balance it.

Auto focus is not fast with this lens. But the IQ is great.

I tried my hands on the eos m at Harvey Norman. It felt sturdy and well built and felt comfortable in my big hands. I was slightly disappointed in the slow AF thought it was using it's native 22mm f2.0. But on the bright side it did make it up for it's slow speed by letting you chose where to AF via touchscreen which is a plus for me. The price was a not unexpected of canon but I wait to see if canon will release a newer version or just do a firmware update to truly decide on buying it. This is just my 2 cents worth

If I bought EOS-M, I would not use it with 580EX2 and 70-200 f2.8 IS (+adapter). :bigeyes:

The camera body design & ergonomic is surely not designed for it.

Using it with the Canon Speedlite 270EX II and 70-200 f4 (+adapter) is more reasonable, due to the tiny weight and size of the EOS-M body.

Well, the EOS M's CDAF is the only system I know that is actually able to track every pattern I throw at it. All the other cameras just circle around the spot you pointed at or fail miserably.

When Pana and Oly were making their G1 and EP1 cameras, the market itself is in its infancy. Now, few people are going to wait for canon’s infant system for 4 years to reach the level that Competitors like Sony, Pana, Olympus are at.

Or put another, 4 years late into the game, 4 years of possible research and development, and this is all they have to show? Surely they can’t be THAT bad at R&D. It is far more likely that Canon’s far to scared of cannibalising their DSLR sales and are deliberately crippling what could have been a market-changing mirrorless system. It’s this sort of complacent corporate mentality that will harm the company in the long run. If you don’t cannibalise your own product sales, some one else is going to eat your pie. I for one hope NEX & M43 obliterate EOS-M. If a hard-knock is what is need for Canon to wake up and actually give photographers what they want, then I really hope they will get it.
