AF Point will illuminate in red in the viewfinder if in low-light condition.

Thanks for the input. No way to ON it? I not used to it. I can only rely on the Beep sound. If the place is noisy then i will have issue. I also notice a green round shape light appear if AF is lock on when i see throught the viewfinder. Any other way to know if its AF lock on besides the Beep sound?

For sports events, you should consider the 70-200 f/4L. If you can afford it, go for the f/2.8L. Food and portraiture you can get the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8. Though it's relatively long focusing distance could be a bit of a problem for food.

Of course, the above recommendations are only valid if you have a large budget. If you don't, then you can replace the 17-55 with a Tamron 17-50, but make sure it's calibrated properly with your body.

hi,

need your advice again. how to know if the camera and lens needs to be calibrated?

which AF mode you are on? the red thingy will only be activated in lower light condition, otherwise it's only the black LED indicator.

Another thing is that you can set the cam to focus priority such that it will only release the shutter only when it have AF confirmation. Do note that it will NOT release the shutter when the AF is not locked, so be aware and dun say cam spoil and shutter doesn't release immediately when you press the shutter.

Check if the AF focus points are in focus, look out for front/back focusing. TBH I have never encountered this issue before, maybe can check with some of the bros using 3rd party lenses with the 7D here.

Not that I know of..... unless it's written and I missed it. Otherwise, you can still see the full dot on lower right viewfinder for AF confirmation if the place is noisy.

Cheers.

Please read page 213 of user guide. Under "C.Fn III-8 VF display illumination".

hey guys, just wanted to share that i got a bg-e7 + lp-e6 for my 7d from ms color at $355 (bg-e7 $240 + lp-e6 $115)

Hey Guys,

I am thinking of getting a 7D over the weekend so I wanna ask if canon has done anything to fix the problem with the 7D's AF which many of you were discussing. Like is there a new batch that is coming in which is fixed or has the issue been solved etc?

Thanks.

If you are scared then you will never buy it. What you hear are those people who are "suay"... you also can see many other people that has got fantastic shots with that camera. So who do you choose to believe? Even for the best camera in the world, there will still be people complaining about it. I have no issue with my 7D thus far. There is a fine line between user error and product error. BTW, nothing is perfect as long as it is man made.

Just go ahead and buy. Those pple who complained just happened to be SUAY...I know your fear. Pay so much and DSLR give you so much problems. Before you buy from the shop, ask the shop pple are these the latest batch. Hope this help.

Thanks for sharing. Why dun you find "cheong" battery instead by the way?

$2K plus people are so scared and consider a lot...then they will never be able to buy a house or a car next time....:bsmilie:

3rd party batt do not work with batt indicator....very risky. org. charger cannot charger 3rd party batt.

Really? I didnt know now it is different liao.

I used to use 3rd party batt Bp-511 for all my xxD cams no problem at all.

I got the 7D when it was first released and was one of the unlucky ones who had MAJOR AF problems with that camera.

CSC tried to calibrate the camera but I am not sure how thorough they were. The entire calibration procedure can take DAYS especially when multiple zoom lenses are involved as outlined here. They usually try to cut corners and that link I just provided explains why.

Anyway, I finally gave up on the whole CSC calibration thing after going back and forth 5 times for more than a month. I asked for a replacement and CSC graciously acquiesced to my request. The replacement is from the latest batch of 7D from Japan.

I can confirm AF of the replacement is a drastic improvement from my original copy.

Sensor performs slightly better at low ISO and slightly poorer at very high ISO (6400 etc), as compared to my first copy. Couldn't be happier. :bsmilie: It is also free from low ISO banding (see here for example).

AF is NOT perfect though as compared to my el cheapo 450D: area AF for flat distant subject is iffy. Also, there is also some slight non-linearity in the 'gain' adjustment wrt subject distance (slightly back-focus near minimum focusing distance)... but MUCH better than my original copy after CSC calibration. Also, 'gain' adjustment wrt to different focal lengths in my zoom lenses works VERY well, so any micro-adjustment setting at the tele end works just as well at the wide end. The last point is an indication of a relatively well calibrated AF sensor (see here for details) since my primary zoom lens was perfectly calibrated to my 450D body.

If you plan to only use ONE camera body and multiple lenses, I strongly recommend you bring ALL your lenses to CSC and request for them to be calibrated for that one body. Seems like CSC does much better when they adjust lenses to body than vice versa. The fact that lenses need to be perfectly matched to EACH camera body is also discussed in detail at this website maintained by a lens rental shop. Since I am holding on to two camera bodies (one with and one without AF adjustment), I am willing to make some sacrifices.

Serial number of replacement is 0430xxxxxx. The serial numbers of early batches start with 02... I understand that even some cameras with serial numbers starting with 03... are problematic as experienced by another unfortunate owner here. In short, avoid cameras with early serial numbers: they either have problematic imaging or AF sensors.

I can only suggest, if you are not sure then don't buy yet. You can wait for next release of 7D, which i don't know when they will do it.
Or you can buy 5DMII.

my 7D seems to always focus on close objects ( body, shirt (dark color) etc instead of the face) when I choose auto. why huh?

It is stated in 7D manual (pg 90) "However, since it is inclined to focus the nearest subject, focusing a specific target is harder than with single-point AF or AF point expansion." It is not mentioned anywhere in the 7D manual that the Auto AF is suppose to function as "face detection". IF you want to focus on the face, could I kindly suggest to you to manually select your AF point? You can refer to pg88 for various quick and easy ways of selecting your AF point. Personally I find the Multi-controller a great way to select the AF point.

Since you've paid for the 19pt AF in the 7D, why not spend a little time to learn about the many features in the camera instead of relying on AUTO AF. I'm sure you did not invest in a 7D to function as a Point-N-Shoot camera, right? ;)

pardon my ignorance... year end already so no time to read the manual yet :embrass:, although it is in my handbag the whole time now :p . And at night I been sleeping with it next to me :p . Seriously.

I was trying to do manual AF, but could not find it in the menu that time. so tried my luck with auto detection thinking it would detect the brighter patch (face).

hahaha.. thanks a lot :P. not PnS la. I was quite happy with the 500D before. Still not used to this 7D.
