i wanna ask you guys on which af mode type and selection point gives you the sharpest picture for non moving portraits and the moving ones like kids? and which drive are you using, one shot, ai-focus or af servo

i have always used expansion point from the center and then recompose and had satisfactory result but now i am trying to move away from it, like 2nd af point from the top center for both vertical and horizontal position to give me better composition.

Actually, I always do a double half press to sense the AF mechanism of the lens. When the AF mechanism do not move any more on the 2nd or 3rd half press, it means the AF is definitely correct and I can go ahead to squeeze of the shutter. (One shot AF)

my 7D seems to always focus on close objects ( body, shirt (dark color) etc instead of the face) when I choose auto. why huh?

If you are not too familiar with the camera now, you can always try face detection AF in live view focus. That should work quite nicely for a start. :)

No kids, so no idea. :bsmilie:

this is what I did. but it always focus at the nearest points, be it the top or sth else not relevant :(.

If you are in auto area AF mode, that is how it's supposed to work.

Now, if you only activate a specific AF point and point it at a relatively large and contrasting area and it still front focuses, then something else is wrong...

For non moving portrait, personally I will use One Shot + Single Pt + Continuous (Select 1 of the 19 AF pt manually). Since I've paid for the CF, might as well shoot in continuous mode and choose from the best shot.

For moving kids, I will use AI Servo + 19pt AF + Continuous (Select 1 of the 19 AF pt manually). Take note that AI Servo + 19pt AF allows you to select your AF pt. However, IF you switch to One Shot + 19pt AF, the AF pt selection will become AUTO. "AI Servo + 19pt AF + Continuous" allows me to track and continuously shoot moving kids and object with good result. In addition, I will set C.Rn III-3 to 1 (Continuous AF track priority), you can refer to 7D manual pg 210 for more details.

3rd party batt do not work with batt indicator....very risky. org. charger cannot charger 3rd party batt.

For your info. I did use the 3rd party batt currently which cost me abt $30. sfsg.

Yup, u are right abt the batt indicator so I want I do is to count my no. of shot to determine my level of batt.

the original charger cannot charge 3rd part batt but 3rd charger can charge both original and 3rd party batt. So I bring out only one charger will do.

pardon my ignorance... year end already so no time to read the manual yet :embrass:, although it is in my handbag the whole time now :p . And at night I been sleeping with it next to me :p . Seriously.

I was trying to do manual AF, but could not find it in the menu that time. so tried my luck with auto detection thinking it would detect the brighter patch (face).

hahaha.. thanks a lot :P. not PnS la. I was quite happy with the 500D before. Still not used to this 7D.

Indeed, I was also intially overwhelmed  by the various new features and degree of customization when I switch from 500D to 7D. But if you take time to understand the camera and the multiple customization options available, you will be richly rewarded by the 7D user experience  I'm also still learning how to utilize all the features in 7D.

yeah... i totally understand this. The last outing with my fren, we sweated out trying to configure how to turn it back to manual focus  hahahha... She using 40D. and me 500D hahaha....

hopefully the next few weeks I would have more time to finally figure out how to man this new baby :bsmilie:

Isn't manual focusing a function on the lens? Just turn the switch from AF to MF la, what's that got to do with camera body?

As for shooting kids, if they are not moving, I usually use single shot, with single AF pt, selecting the AF pt that is closest to my intended focus spot and then recompose and shoot. If the kids are playing and running around, I'd usually use AI servo with AF expansion, again selecting the focus pt nearest to my intended focus, and then track and shoot under continuous shooting mode.

Like what doodah had said, my replacement body is really a world apart from the first one I got in terms of AF! :)

Does 7D have a bad noise control?

BEST in the APS-C market now. Certainly as good as 450D. Better than 50D, 500D and D300s. 7D does not cheat on RAW files like D90/D5000/A550/K-x.

Ok, thanks for sharing!

I guess the Noise control ain't that bad, pretty good actually:D

Noise issue has to do with getting the right exposure. I get good noise control from 7D even up to ISO6400, as long as your exposure is spot on. Slightly overexpose your shots by 1/3 stop for high ISO and you find less noise. Try it.;)

I noticed high iso noise maybe more apparent when the environment and subject is in the dark - such as in a nightclub, stage performance when lighting is low, subject under street lights at night.

My test shot... Converted from raw using DPP. This may not be a good example of what i mentioned.
