EOS 7D user,information sharing thread.

I read on DPR forum that serial # below 102000 (last 6 digit) might have problem with AF. But this rumor was never confirmed. I bought my 7D on the first day of launch in Singapore (1st Oct) and my serial # is already 1082XX with FW 1.0.7. I don't think new set with FW 1.1.0 will have serial # lower than mine

So far no issue with AF (tested spot, single, expansion, zone and 19pt). But need to send my Sigma 50mm F1.4 to Sigma for calibration as the AF micro-adjustment was insufficient to compensate for this lens. My 24-105 does not need any micro-adjustment :D

my Fren has just returned the 7D and gotten a 5DMKII instead...:thumbsd:

Mine serial number is 3166XX(last 6 digit) with firmware version 1.1.0. Bought 2weeks ago, no AF problem so far, though need to micro-adjust all my lenses from -1 to +3. I have bought the Sigma 50mm F1.4 too, need to micro-adjust +2 to get sharp focus wide open.

As per dpreview.com, it was mentioned that the 7D has an "unreliable white balance under artificial lighting".

Has anyone encountered this problem on the 7D??? I seemed to realise that the AWB tend to be more 'greenish' for indoor lightings. Is it just me, or do you guys notice that too? I need to adjust the WB shift correction everytime I shoot indoors....

I facing the same issue on my Sigma 50 F1.4. Under indoor fluorescent light, some time the photo taken turns out to be greenish especially when pointing the lens near the light source. But my other lenses won't have this issue.:dunno:

Finally understand the root cause. The shuttle is too fast, the indoor fluorescent light cannot catch up, creating greenish effect on the picture.

just got my hands on 7D yesterdae and took her out for a shoot with my sigma 30mm.
Image seems soft. Not too sure whether is it a user, lens or body problem.
I have definately taken sharper pix with my sigma 30mm + 450D
so could the problem lies with the camera body?

All pix taken with M-Raw and converted to Jpeg in PS (quality 12). Sharpness is left at default 3 in Canon DPP program.

Is this a 100% crop or a full frame resize picture?

Fren,

Ask a person who owns a 5DMKII and take the same pic with the MKII... u will know how soft is 7D pics.

I've the 7D, but I don't think my 7D can be that soft. 5DII sharper that 7D is reasonable, because 5DII has higher pixel count.

F/1.4 compare with F/2?
7D is a bit soft compare with 5D but it will not be as soft as the photo above. looks more like oof

how about old 5d classic vs 7d?
13mp vs 18mp.

may i ask how did you figure out the adjustment necessary? Did you use:

1. 45 degree angle chart

or

2. Trial error on + & - compensation in micro-adjust?

The problem with micro-adjust is that lens are not uniform across the whole focal length. My lens is perfect with +5 adjust when zoom at 55mm, but the same lens screw up the 17-35mm range after +5.

If I am not wrong, I remember the canon tech saying when they do focusing adjustment, they have to consider the entire focal range the lens has.

Thanks

Ha ha. Below is my own method of adjusting my lenses, other people might have better way to do it.
1)For fix focal lens like my Sigma 50 F1.4, I'll mount the camera on tripod. Set AV mode wide open, large Jpeg, Picture Style switch to Neutral, set Drive Mode to 2sec Self-timer, switch on Liveview, manual focus. Focus on static object distant around 1m, take photo.
Turn the focusing ring to infinity, engage the AF switch, switch off Liveview, set AF to One Shot AF, set AF point as Spot AF at the center AF point, set mirror lockup, depress shuttle button to take another photo.
Playback and compare these 2 photos sharpness on AF targeted spot. If they are tally, no adjustment needed, if not, keep adjust until they are equal or close to equal.
Try the same way to far distance object(distance scale close to infinity) and compare sharpness on AF targeted spot on those pictures. Repeat the process until getting the most acceptable result.

2)For all my zoom lenses, I will use the same method to adjust on the wide end(close & infinity focusing) and long end(close & infinity focusing).

Am not using angle chart so far.

Hmm, in this comparison, the 7D is soft. Can you forward the EXIF data so that we can have more idea how these two camera is being compared?

it's soft for 7D...regardless of pixel count.

Just share some pictures taken from my 7D. For me, I'm satisfy with the IQ it's delivered.

Just like what I had expected, 7D pics will definitely be softer than 5D, because 5D is full-frame sensor. 7D is 1.6x crop, so the pic cropped and then blow-up, it will be softer. I was surprise Canon launch 7D at S$2699, S$1000 cheaper than 5D, only to be disappointed to know it's not full-frame, no wonder the S$1000 difference. If really want sharp and clear picture, better invest in a full-frame system. But 7D has very good drive-mode, 8fps, and good video mode 1080p.

Oh, yes. May be you are right. Can please show us some 5D photos with no sharpening and it's 100% crop? Better with no post processing and come with original EXIF data.

For the pixel peepers out there who are so concerened about the softness, please give this a good read regarding diffraction and pixel size. http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/infobank/capturing_the_image/pixels_and_image_size.do

And please, if Canon gave the 7D a Full Frame sensor, who the heck would buy a 5D II for $1200 more? The 5D II is to the 7D what the 1Ds III is to the 1D III. Both have different purposes. If you're not going to shoot at relatively large apertures most of the time or are extremely concerned with image quality because it affects the $$$ in your pocket at the end of the day, then please save your money and get the 5D II or 1D IV.
