Bought my first DSLR today at Parisilk-Holland. 500D with 18-200mm for $1784 w/o GST ($1908 with GST).
Very happy with the image and video I'm getting so far :thumbsup:. Will play with more setup over the weekend
Err... are you serious about the quoted price? I thought 18-200mm only is about 1000 something...

$1908 with GST for 500D body AND 18-200mm! This kit is only available sometime in May, but special "arrangement" was made and I've both 18-200 and 500D right now

I think the shop took in the 18-55 and sell u a 18-200mm and then just make u pay the price different.. as the KIT-2 set for 500D not in yet..
I guess ur box now says KIT set with 18-55mm rite?

I'd say you got yourself a good deal then, congrats on your purchase and have fun doing photography with your new DSLR...What resist and hate the advancement in technology? When you guys weren't playing with Digital SLRs, and the film reigned the day, old folks on film were disgusted with capturing images on memory chips. Digital conversion?! Pui!
And the CDs replaced vinyl which was supposed to be smooth and easy on the ears? The old folks went PUI! again.
Where are we today?
Video is there, love it or hate it, it will be a big part of the digital age. We never had it before because technology wasn't good enough to process 1920x1080 pixels 30 fps in a small little chip. Today, we can. Tomorrow, we'll be doing better. No matter how well shot a photograph is, it doesn't move you like a similarly well shot video, with sound.

Well video is nice to have but I won't use it much. If you give it to me for free of course I want it la.... But if there is a version of 500d without video and $200 cheaper then I'll take the one without video.
with no AF in video.. its really not meant to replace any good old cheap camcorders.. i guess 500D video is more for moments u want to record some 20-30 short clips.. but to video a 1 hr video event, it just not practical..
want 720p or full 1080p video and cheap? go get those taiwan brand like AIPTEK (sgd200).. or sanyo xacti.. (start from sgd350)..

I thought there was AF in video. The contrast detect AF.
is the AF fast? or is it gonna be as slow as when u try to AF in liveview in 450D? ..
also the AF, if changes time to time while recording, wont the sound of the AF motor be recorded too?
sound will be in mono i read..
btw 1080P is 20fps.. pls, for those owner, dont do that.. just set 720p and have the fps up to 30.. a 720p 30fps is much much better then a 1080p 20fps

I was just thinking about this topic and why most people find it such a disadvantage to take videos without AF and I am immediately reminded of my experience with regular camcorders. In most camcorders, AF is good feature to have but yet it is not always reliable because it cannot read our minds. It tends to wonder off sometimes when we pan or change the scene because it doesn't know where or what we want to maintain the focus on. Sometimes this is not evident because the sensor of regular camcorders are so small which gives a greater DOF that the user may not notice the AF shifting. That is why movies are shot in MF - for precise creative control.
It's not that I'm resistant to new innovative technology (on the contrary), but I believe that too much automation has created a whole new generation of photographers that are so reliant on AF that they have forgotten how to MF or even used it at all. Apologies if anyone is offended, certainly not my intention. I'm just highlighting that MF during video is not THAT difficult. Just takes some practice.

You will probably receive more free gift by Jun PC show, provided you can wait until Jun........:think:
