EM-10 Official! The OM-D for All!

Hi guys,
Will like hear from you guys why em10 instead of em5 or em1? I am wondering which body to go.
Will be even better if there are someone who jumps from dslr to m4/3 and pick up OMD.

The time when I took the most photos will be during oversea trips, etc: landscape and building. If not will be daily streets or food. So I guess I can be consider more of a street photographer type.

Have been using current setup for some years and weight has been coming and issue especially when you travel. Current setup dslr body + 24-70f2.8. So I believe a 12-40f2.8 + 25f1.8 will be an ideal replacement for street/travel and food. The tough question will be the body. Even thou I have been using a weather seal body but till date, there was hardly a need. Usually when it starts to rain or pour we will usually be taking cover or at least in foul weather gears so I believe the new body will not be a need. Light weight and fast AF will be a must! I have tried Em1 and was pretty impress with its fast AF response. As I have no hands on experience with Em10 so I am unsure of its performance. I believe in user experience than paper specs comparison.
So what's bothering me will be. What are the things which bring you to em10 instead of em1? What will we be missing out, other than the weather sealing, grip(add on) ...
Will like to hear your view.

Can anyone with the auto lens cap give their feedback? I read from dpreview that the auto lens cap is too sensitive that it opens up easily even with a slightest bump even when kept in your camera bag. One user said the X-Cap by Freemod seems to be a better, and more compact choice

I dun hv such problem n thk the lens cap is brilliant. By right the lens cap only open when the lens is deployed. I think those criticisms come from people who never screw on the lens cap properly.

Em10 for me with the pancake zoom kit lens with the auto lens cap. Smallest travel setup. If u want prime I would go either 14 2.5 panny or 17 1.8 oly. Can shoot portrait up close, food, landscape, frens n family, low light and hotel room. The other thing i like is wifi and built in flash. You are right abt weather resistance, the number of times it's used is prob less than 1/year for most people. For me, I hv only used weather resistance function three times in last 5 years in 4/3 dslr. Once during pouring rain, just to prove a point. Second when I fell in beach surf with camera - a piece of wood came in with the surf n hit my leg and caused me to fall into the water. The third time was when I had to rinse the saltwater off a few hours later back at the hotel room. You decide if that one accident is worth paying for weather resistance.

Hi oly5050,

Thanks for sharing ur experience. Very true about the weather resistance and portability of compact size of e-m10.

The body price of em10 and em1 is significant hence I am being careful of not spending on function that I might not utilize. In worse case scenario, I will have to come back to FF setup.

Is it possible for you guys to share how is the Em series auto tracking(Ai servo) for moving objects + burst mode. I have been reading on user review there are 2 schools of thought.

I have the chance to hands on em5 several time to test out this ability, it does not seem to be able to achieve high accuracy. Pardon me Em5 users no offence, do correct me.

I am aware that oly battery life is rather short and this can be solve easily. Curious if there is any way to charge multiple batteries at one go ? Can't seem to find such charger. Usually during trips, I need to use up to 2-3 dslr batt for a week trip.

hi,

maybe 1 question to ask is why are u leaving FF setup? If its portability of course then the EM10 might be good, 2 sets to complement each other rather than set 1 vs set 2. EM1 definitely's lighter than a FF setup (try a EM1, 12-40/2.8 vs a FF, 24-70/2.8 comparison) but its still not 'that' light by any reasonable measure. The EM10 and EM1 caters to diff needs.

EM5's auto tracking can be improved of course, but the AFS-C function on the EM1, EM5, EP5 is a function I rarely use - for the simply reason that the AFS on these bodies are so fast that I seldom have any need for auto tracking. I use AFS-M mode and I've never had to curse for missing a shot while using other brands, yes - i've cursed before. Pre-focusing on a spot also helps, we learn to work around the cameras not depend on the cameras to work for us :bsmilie:

Batt life I've used the BLS5, BLS1 and BLN1 variations working my way up from EP3 to EM5 to EP5 and now EM1. I typically shoot around min 300~500 onwards per day on a trip and hmm, not much of an issue with batt life. Even in chilling cold temperatures in Nepal and using the EP5 / EM5 bodies, i've never the case of a batt dying on me. The only way to charge multiple batts at once now is to buy another charger, i think.

Hello all EM10 users, just wondering if the little camera suitable to use either the Oly 12-4- f2.8 pro or the Pana 12-35 f2.8? i am thinking of getting the cam but would hope to have a good wide zoom lens like these 2. But i worry these lens too big for EM10

Both lens take sharp pictures, the 12-35 will be the smaller option and parfocal. Nevertheless, I still recommend using a grip to keep it balance

Hi keithwee,

I am delighted to see your reply. It's always nice to get review from someone who is experience with various body setup.

You're absolutely right in switching between setup depending on situation and need. It's portability that I am looking at as it's the most important. I need to manage my expectation before jumping for the body.
Usually I will pre focus or pann if need be. The question on auto tracking is a good to have but not impt as I can switch.

300-500pcs a day is more than enough for me. Initially I came across a review that mention 200+ per batt ^^

Sometime I am being over prudence when it comes to BBB virus. Just need that little push factor ^^

Thanks!!

Welcome, it's a good habit to be prudent with purchases haha :)
I'll recommend the EM10 seeing u've a FF setup though, after all it uses the EM5 sensor and EM1 processor. For weather- sealing , my take is I've used the EP5 in adverse weather too (dripping wet/snow) but it still ended up ok though of course it's not something I'll recommended doing for the sake of doing.

Today I tried the 12-40 with the EM10 at shop. Actually feel quite ok. Though a bit big for this cam body but you hold the lens instead of the body, looks and feel very compact and nice. Most importantly the lens is fantastic with wide 24mm - 80mm at f2.8. I am likely taking this combination.

My Initial impression is also like that, but without a grip to hold on your hands will feel tired for hours of shootout

How can anyone go wrong with the 12-40/2.8 ? ;)
But yeap, prob get the EM10 grip for better balance too.

If you got the "feelings" about EM10 and 12-40mm F2.8 and you are quite happy, go for both!

Can't decide what else to buy besides the grip with regards to the $100 voucher.
Am waiting for the DSTE batteries from Ebay so currently no need for extra battery.
Anyone got the lens cap? Any good?

See the feedbacks given by Oly and Clicke from the previous page

Can I ask if any bros/gals here who own the EM10 with grip have mounted a Olympus 12-40 on the camera and do you feel an imbalance of weight on the camera body?

Hey guys, would like to check with you all. In the DPReview EM10 review, they said that for Multi Function, we can switch between 5 available functions but when I tried it, there are only 2 functions for me to switch between, the Color Creator and Highlight&Shadow Control. Did I miss out on something?:(:dunno:

Multi Function

In addition to the simplified 2x2 system, the E-M10 also offers the 'Multi Function' system first introduced with the E-M5, but adding the 'Color Creator' mode introduced on the E-M1. As the name implies, the Multifunction system places several functions on the same button; press the button to use the last-used function, hold it and spin a control dial to switch between the five available functions.

Dun have camera now, but I remember you can check which of the multifunction you want to use. I'll check in a bit and update when home.
