EM-10 Official! The OM-D for All!

no, not similar in focal length.
70D is 1.6x, hence a 50mm f1.8 will have a field of view of 80mm

m43 25mm f1.8 which is 2x, will have a field of view of 50mm.

Thanks for that explanation. So in short, the shorter the focal length, the greater the angle of view? Meaning more wider?

@rocketatw how do we redeem the freebies and what is the freebies ah? Uncle was explaining too fast already then I'm a bit confused..

first, you must register online before go down to olympus at river valley.

for redemption, bring along your
1) original receipt
2) warranty card
3) your IC

they will then process your warranty extension from 1yr to 3yrs via their system.(i heard you must register before go down)
beside, the 2yrs extended warranty, they will give you a bag and $100 voucher. voucher can only be use to redeem accessories like batteries, grip, strap, case bag, etc.

and take note, redemption must be made before 20th Mar 2014.

Oh I see! Thanks! It was nice meeting u.. :)

same, nice meeting you too.:)

Noted! Will register online tmr then after that go down redeem then go shoot shoot shoot! Haha!

Thanks. Now contemplating if i really need the 14-42 or just go with only the 25mm for a start.

Take both.
Sometimes maybe big family gathering you will need the 14.
I predict only CNY, Christmas etc lol.
Most of the time stick to 25mm hehe.

Anyway who ever is going to redeem, appreciate if you can check if the grip is available. Else I hate to make a trip there so many times.
Actually I didn't register before going down. I did it on the spot ;p

I was there today to collect the gifts and was told that either register on the spot using my phone or tablet so they could update the extended warranty immediately or email to them after registration. I choose the latter and email them, respond by them was fast :)

Was told voucher valid till August.

That isn't all, actually. Using F/1.8 on M4/3 vs F/1.8 on FF is different.

symbiote28 - read this: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/understanding-series/dslr-mag.shtml

To add on, the difference in the Depth Of Field you get from f/1.8 on m4/3 vs Canon APS-C vs FF from a mathematical POV can be calculated from the DOF formula.

DOF = S[SUB]F[/SUB] - S[SUB]N[/SUB] = [ 2(m+1) * F-number * c ] / {m[SUP]2[/SUP] - [(F-number * c) / f][SUP]2[/SUP]}

Where
S[SUB]F[/SUB]= Furthest subject distance in focus
S[SUB]N[/SUB]= Nearest subject distance in focus
m= i/s = (image distance from lens to sensor) / (subject distance to lens)
F-number = f/D = focal length / aperture
c = circle of confusion for sensor ( use 0.015mm for olympus m4/3, 0.019mm for canon 7D APS-C, 0.030mm for canon 5D FF)

So as you can see, you can reduce DOF (more "bokeh") by increasing focal length(f) or decreasing the F-number(wider aperture)

Using the current example of FF equivalent 50mm at f/1.8 with the same picture composition at 5m from subject (after 1.6x and 2x "magnification" respectively), for
Canon 5D : using focal length of 50mm on lens and standing at a distance of 5m from the subject, the DOF is 1.4 meters
Canon 7D(APS-C) : using focal length of 31mm on lens and standing at a distance of 8m from the subject, the DOF is 8.66 meters
Olympus E-M1/5/10 (m4/3): using focal length of 25mm on lens and standing at a distance of 10m from the subject, the DOF is 10.57 meters

Which means that in general FF will have a smaller DOF and more "bokeh" than APS-C and m4/3 when using the same aperture setting and picture composition.

Anyway if you want to skip all these calculation, just download Simple DOF iPhone app to know the DOF that you will get for respective camera formats, focal length, and aperture size.

So fast have ppl post em10 under bns.. Should have waited one day can save $50 buy from him.. >_<

looking for advice here.

planning to get the em-10 for sure. but see around the forum the 25mm lens seems a good buy. Wondering for casual point and shoot person that love travelling around is it worth getting the 25mm lens.

and how much is that lens alone?

Have you shot with a fixed focal lens before? If not then playing with the pancake kit lens first might be preferable.
In any case, stocks for this lens is plentiful and no hurry really.
Price ranges 470-480.

Edit:
P.S just realised this is my 100th post. I've posted more in the last 2 weeks than the last 3 years lol

one wise man (who runs a 2nd hand camera shop) told me this before:

U never know until u've done a thorough check. The person might have dropped it for all u know :) In short, always check before u buy. I was too trusting before and had ended up with a fungus ridden body from an unscrupulous seller.

don't mistake the Panasonic 25/1.4 for the Olympus 25/1.8 ;)
