Efficiency of our trains?

Well, it just means train capacity at peak hours is getting very much far over nominal capacity. Infastructure itself can't handle the density of people. The infastructure for the older tracks are technology that hasnt changed much since the standards were set long ago, only more electronic based.
A few solutions:

They say that they need to keep the speeds of the trains to a certain speed of about 75kph is true, as our tracks are considered very heavily used in terms of frequency, not tonnage. Its very important to ensure that the tracks are in proper position since small variations can cause derailment.

Instead of 6 train cars, the standard should be 8 cars.
Means hacking up stations to extend them and the other problem is that 6 cars is a standard that train manufacturers provide. (Still possible)
Or instead of using standard gauge rail, use broad gauge rail. FYI: Gauge is the width of the tracks, large gauge can support heavier, bigger trains that can run faster. Standard gauge is 1435mm or 4ft, 8.5 inches wide. Malaysian KTM rail is 1000mm (narrow gauge).
Means hacking up tunnels (near impossible now) to widen them. Also means replacing trains, special ordering new broad gauge ones since most of the world uses standard gauge.
Improve the signalling system on the older lines to reduce frequency further. The older train signalling system cannot handle faster than 2 mins. (Will need long shutdowns on the current lines)
 

How do you find the efficiency of MRT trains.

overall, i think other than the waiting time in off-peak, mrt is really quite good, just that we tend to not appreciate what we have. cleanliness i think is one of the best. jerkiness as well. so far i think only hk mtr is similar.

i haven't been to new york, but when i posted pictures of the none-too-clean tube on FM, i was greeted with gasps of amazement that it looked like a heaven to them. i felt like showing them singapore's version of the tube. :bsmilie:
 

You should take train in Tokyo during peak hour to get a real feeling of sardines. :bsmilie:
My personal feeling of train in Singapore is ok, but Hong Kong MTR is better.

I had worked in tokyo and hong kong for some time already, and all i can say is Singapore's condition is worst than tokyo's and hong kong's nowadays. trust me, singapore is more packed now.

But among the three, hong kong is still the better one. hong kong is good because during peak period, every train arrives in less than a minute! Singapore? still need arnd 2 mins, dam it.

Not only train, do you notice that bus in Hong Kong is more efficient (more frequent) than Singapore.

Aiyoo.. cannot complain lar.. Just take it and be happy..

One of my friends has been driving his own car when he was 18 years old. It is almost 18 years since then he uses the public transport unless his car breakdown. He gave up on public transport long time ago.
 

Efficiency of our trains .... hmmmm. If you ask me to rate it from 1 to 10, i'd give it 6.5.

Having lived abroad, I dare say that our trains are clean and don't smell, unlike in London. If not, how else would you find people sleeping on the floor of the train?

However, I wish our trains are punctual. For example, in Japan, at each station, they are able to indicate the actual time a train would reach the station. As such, I was able to schedule what time my alarm clock should go off, how much preparation time I had from brushing my teeth to bathing and putting on my clothes, how fast I needed to walk from my apartment to the station, if I had time to buy newspaper at the next station before I board on the 3rd connecting train to my destination. Oh, and breakfast at the apartment's cafeteria is always a rush affair, with an eye always on the clock.

In Singapore, even though they say 2 minutes is the longest you'd have to wait between trains during peak hours, I notice sometimes it can drag on to 4 minutes. Though I don't take the MRT now during peak hours as it can get very crowded and hard to maneuver with a wheelchair, I always wished they could up their service level.

Enough of my ramblings. It's my contribution to the topic.

Talk about the electronic board say 2 mins, sometimes, it drag more than 4 mins and the board still show 2 mins! I hate it when they start lying!

Until you have been pushed in and squeezed, I wouldn't say it is funny. It's a fact of life there. During the day, more than 2 million people comes into the Tokyo area. When I was living there, I could let my briefcase go and the darn case wouldn't drop cos there's simply no room to even scratch your butt!.

I'm sure Singapore will one day reach this point when the population reaches more than 7 million people.
 

there is a logical explanation why trains sometimes do not come in a regular interval - at each stop, esp during peak hours, more passenger means it will take a longer time for passengers to get on and off. also, passengers rushing to get onto the train means passengers inside cannot alight. cannot alight means delay in trains moving off. imagine if each train is delayed by 30s at each station. 10 stations would mean 300s. so if passengers want the trains to run on time they have to play their part too.
 

well. define efficient. if ur aiming at the best allocation of resources for the most number of people's needs, i have to admit, the mrt is probably one of the most efficient. we have a fixed number of mrts, which surprisingly arrive at quite decently accurate times. not just that, cleanliness as raised my nightmare is one plus point. as for the amt of ppl, i will say its not as bad as japan's transport network. at the least i never had to be pushed on the train (:

lucky Japanese are decently clothed and well kept; else one will faint with that close proximity. in general, our blue collar worker need to make an effort to improve hygienically (going home trip)

i have learn that Japanese like to arrive on time for work i.e. not early nor late. that could have attribute to those peak hour rush since they always leave home punctually and catch the train that reaches the company at that precise timing . in contrary, our working pattern are more evenly spreaded out from 7am to 9am

This option of giving up public transport is only possible if one's income is enough to cover the cost of owning a car. :( Not to the ability of the masses... although it seems like more and more people are owning a car... :dunno:

The only solution to solve this overpacked on SMRT trains is to cater more bus routes to the same destination. A decade ago, many ppl were pissed when the bus routes were cancelled when there were duplicate routes to the destinations. It's time to get them back..

Maybe greener, but I hate doing the mowing! Especially when you have a large patch of grass which may turn into lalang!
