Efficiency of our trains?

Shd make the train longer, and stretch from east to west, north to south, heaven to hell, so the train just move like merry go round....... will be the first in the world again.

just a few days back i needed to wait for the third train before i could board at Clement towards joo koon. and whats more, after i boarded the train, i saw the two ns boys whom were waiting even before me had to wait for another train...... Welcome to foreign-owned SINGAPORE!!!

Really, does it helps to complain here? think every where is the same. Human population is increasing like no body business. you see a small country like SG got so many ppl and all having the same working time and knock off time. Almost all working at the same location. So jam pack is normal. Try looking at oversea, its worst.

In some countries eg Australia, if the trains do not come according to schedule, based on percentage per month, the passengers with monthly tickets get refunds or compensation. Here, the SMRT or whoever pays a fine to dunno who, but does not benefit the commuters.

Having said that, I think the trains are ok, can do better but already not bad. And not that expensive too.

I have noticed that the trains are not carrying their capacities due to inconsiderate commuters refusing to move to the sides of the cabins. Sometimes, I wonder why these people refuse to move in. Is it because there are ghosts inside the trains, so that they prefer to stand near the doorways. In addition, some commuters are too engrossed with their own activities such as reading newpapers / books as well as chatting away while standing. Hence, they are glued to the floor. You will realise that many a time the door areas are always crowded but not inside the cabins.

this is more of a social culture thing. despite all these years of education and courtesy campaigns, we are not anywhere close to the Japanese or even the Taiwanese for that matter. Anybody who has been to Japan and Taiwan can probably vouch for that.

I have also noticed the trains are crowded even after peak hours at times. We have 4 millions population now. I can't imagine when we have 6 millions population which the government is targeting.

Is the waiting time 5-6 mins acceptable after peak hours? Peak hours end at what time? It took me 12 mins to board a train at 9.15am, so is such timing considered after peak hours?

No wonder some of my friends will never take public transport but rather drives despite higher costs. There are many benefits of driving your own cars but I shall not elaborate since this is not the point of discussion here.

SMRT has now and then increase the fare prices sighting higher operations costs. These costs come in the form of hiring more security officers, instaling more CCTVs, etc. And the same time it is making handsome profits annually. It is perfectly alright for SMRT to make remarkable profits since it is no longer providing a public good. I hope that SMRT will look into enhancing its efficiency rather than just on some superficial stuff.

Singapore has been cultivated as a country whereby profits and bottom line is the single most important thing. Anything else doesn't matter. Our Government are already running this country like a corporation. Therefore, for a 'privatized' public transport company, the single biggest index that matter most to them is profits. This is one index management will do whatever they can to keep increasing, even at the expense of commuters.

And lastly, me feels that our Government certainly lacks the foresight to consider the infrastructure supporting this country when they decided to go easy on the immigration policy. The population has exploded in the past 2 years and now almost all of the public infrastructure are being maxed out.

Haha they do have foresight, to have passengers squeezing like sardines on every train is in their plan, since it will max out the profit.

In fact, they probably have not reached their target yet.

Yes, I do agree. It is more a cultural thing. In Japan, clearing your own plates, etc after you have finished your meal is a norm. If you choose to ignore, a lot of eyes will stare at you. We may be first class in airport, etc but definitely not on behavioural.

Yes, most GLCs or governement related companies have privatised or corporatised. If these companies are not making profits, can our GIC or Temasek buy into foreign assets? They need funds.

This is not a complaint thread.

There is no point complaining in a single controlled environment. You can complain until the cow comes home but nothing will be done.

I created this thread to gather views/feedback from members of the public with regards to the efficiency of our trains.

It's very good compared to other countries.

Welcome to foreign-owned SINGAPORE!!!
In a previous economic seminar that I had attended, the speaker brought up a very interesting analogy that ~30% of the Singapore homeland literally constitute earth with a foreign origin.

While I do not agree totally with him in many aspects, the fact remains that not only do we have to grow our economic with the contributions of foreign talents, we have to increase the physical land area of our homeland with foreign sand and soil as well.

You should take train in Tokyo during peak hour to get a real feeling of sardines. :bsmilie:
My personal feeling of train in Singapore is ok, but Hong Kong MTR is better.

I have - in summer! - but the smell somehow over there is better
And people are considerate. Here... claim space with backpack for men, claim space with handbag for ladies, read newspaper like nobody's business even if the paper poke other people, etc etc

me thinks its quite ok liao. apart from the occasional suicide cases which cause it to go hay wire.

anyone noticed that they finally decided to install gates? i'll bet tat its to prevent some random tard from jumping in and screwing everyone up

SMRT start to have these people too but they dont push that hard.
Initially they have in AMK & Bishan but now I dont see anymore.
They still have in Bishan, during morning peak hour.
They also wear white gloves

OH WTH LOL

does anyone have a photo of this? i think it would be funny.

but still, my only (or used to be) complaint was that the mrt was a good suicide avenue and it spooks me out. imagine u riding on the death place of some ppl.

They are not effective, so I guess that SMRT has taken most of them out.

Inconsistent arrival time. Sometimes, the train come at 7.17am, sometime at 7.15am. It do make a different cos planning of slp is very important.

Morning peak hour waiting time is 4mins. I feel abit too long. Cos when the train from JE to Yew Tee, the train is already carrying about 50% capacity already which is only for a short 4 stations.

Train sometimes travel at very slow, sometimes very fast, totally inconsistent speed.

Super pack train at peak hours. Very squeezy already , train still wan to load even more passengers at interchange.

I do like the train cleaniness though.

this one reminds me. i used to have a lot of tactics while travelling on the mrt;D

TACTIC ONE: always rush to stand beside doors. that is the only place where u have something to lean on. if u are a group of students? just sit on floor !no one says anything cause you are a group of innocent looking students:D just watch out dun block anyone!

TACTIC TWO: INTERCHANGE. when its interchange, u will see almost everyone moving off the train. for example, the east west line, u travelling to jurong east. when u reach there, all will alight and u get a sit;D

TACTIC three!: its ok to travel a longer distance for a seat of u have the time. forexample if u stay near pionner mrt, and u wanna have a sit, take to the direction of jookun! then when reach terminal, u will get to sit and enjoy the nice long ride.

Efficiency of our trains .... hmmmm. If you ask me to rate it from 1 to 10, i'd give it 6.5.

Having lived abroad, I dare say that our trains are clean and don't smell, unlike in London. If not, how else would you find people sleeping on the floor of the train?

However, I wish our trains are punctual. For example, in Japan, at each station, they are able to indicate the actual time a train would reach the station. As such, I was able to schedule what time my alarm clock should go off, how much preparation time I had from brushing my teeth to bathing and putting on my clothes, how fast I needed to walk from my apartment to the station, if I had time to buy newspaper at the next station before I board on the 3rd connecting train to my destination. Oh, and breakfast at the apartment's cafeteria is always a rush affair, with an eye always on the clock.

In Singapore, even though they say 2 minutes is the longest you'd have to wait between trains during peak hours, I notice sometimes it can drag on to 4 minutes. Though I don't take the MRT now during peak hours as it can get very crowded and hard to maneuver with a wheelchair, I always wished they could up their service level.

Enough of my ramblings. It's my contribution to the topic.
