And is you are using flash to take your pictures, remember to use the wide angle diffuser, or else you will have dark corners.

Thank you for the advise!!

btw, the problem is due to perspective distortion (which is because of the closeness and the wide angle), rather than the lens inherent distortion (which is due to design). so, using the 10mm to take very large group of people further away will have less perspective distortion effect compared to using the 10mm end to take small group of people nearby.

Any other similar wide-angle lens used in the same manner will give u similar distorted perspective. But if another lens (with worse off inherent distortion) is used, it'll make the pic even worse (i.e. perspective+inherent distortion combined).

Thank you for the clear explaination.. Think i will go for the 10-22

17-40L. Nuff said.

I noe what u're prolly thinking, "Dun want flash, natural light is best." right? ;)

Nop.. will still be using flash as i think both lens is not fast enuff.. What more important to me is to get the whole group of pple at the table to be in photo in tight situations.

Yes pal, renting it for the day only. Guess i'll just be using this lens only cos must fully utilise it, coupled with my DIY bounce card with 420EX flash (cos 420EX can't go as wide as 17mm so hope my DIY bounce card helps).

Out of curiousity, where do you rent lenses and how much does it cost?

I rented it from ray_stinger at $40 a day. Tried it at the wedding shoot today..superb! Cos most of the time i needed that extra wide angle to cover space constraint shots.

17-40L if you are shooting people.
10-22 is OK but distortion on peoples faces at the edges is disconcerting to me.

As for distortion in gp photos.

As long you keep everyone along the center line and shoot dead on as opposed to an angle, the distortion is not so bad. By shooting down up or top down or at an extreme angle, will introduce distortion in almost all wide angle lens regardless.

Tried the 17-40L at a wedding shoot last saturday, the distortion at 17mm is minimal for table shots but have a nice effect on other still objects.

How would you compare both lens at the same FL for shooting people? Say both at 17mm? Does 10-22 gives more distortion? I am also considering either one of these lenses.

Thanks.

Up for these 2 lenses! Hope to get mine someday....

Actually, i do have both, 17-40 & 10-22 all canons'. Might replace the 17-40 if I get the new EFS 17-55mm f2.8.

I love using the 17-40L on my film body, coupled with slides. The results are super wide and wow!!

Hey guys, i'm also debating between the 2 lenses here. I would think i am using the wides for travel photography and alot of street stuff. I am torn cause i dunno whether to get the 10-22 for the lovely perspective of the ultra wide end (see http://www.pbase.com/drhangar/photo_a_day) or the better range of the 17-40. What is the other problem is that one is an EF-S lens and its not weather sealed? So what do you guys say? I can only get one... =(

The 17-40mm f/4L is also not completely sealed, the lens element moves in and out of the barrel and is only "sealed" if you use a filter on it but it still has a sucking action.

I tried 10-22 EFS at CP a few weeks ago. I tried sigma 15-30 also. The distortion on 10-22 at 10 is very reasonable if u take others rather than people. Very good corner to corner sharpness. very much sharper than sigma 15-30 at wide ends. The built is very solid. Sharpness is comparable to 17-40 F4 L if not better.   .

very tempting. I would have bought it if i need that wide.. just hand itchy and tried...:bsmilie: :bsmilie: :

But for weddings, I think it is too wide.. 17-40 will be almost just nice.. too bad that canon don't have 15(x1.6=24)-40 or something like that for $1200..

You already have 24-105L then 10-22mm would be the better choice..

Hi thanks to all who replied. I'm holding a 350D+kit lens+24-105f4 now.

I'm looking for a wide angle lens. Thats why i come up with this 2, as a lot of the forumers here had comment that the EF-s 10-22 is a great lens and the distortion is well under control.

I have played with my friend's 17-40 but have not touch the 10-22 yet. Thats why i wanna seek more opinion from you guys here which is more suitable lens for dinner events.

No good.. 24mm on cropped camera is very restrictive.. For outdoor walkabout it's ok..
